Jammu and Kashmir cricketer Umran Malik is the fastest Indian bowler in world cricket.

While playing for Hyderabad in the Indian T20 League, Umran Malik bowled the fastest ball by an Indian bowler at 157kph against Delhi at the Brabourne Stadium on May 5, 2022.

Malik has consistently broken the 150kph barrier after recording speeds of 153.3kph,153.1kph, 153kph, 152.9kph, 152.6kph, 152.4kph, 152.3kph and 152kph during the 2022 edition of the Indian T20 League.

Malik has also bowled the fifth-fastest ball (154kph) in the Indian T20 League, overtaking New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson who clocked 153.9kph. The list is spearheaded by former Australia fast bowler Shaun Tait who had recorded a 157.71kph delivery in 2011.

Delhi pacer Mayank Yadav features second on the list of fastest Indian bowlers. Representing Team Lucknow, Yadav made his Indian T20 League debut against Team Lucknow in 2024. He recorded a 155.8kph delivery to Punjab captain Shikhar Dhawan. Mayank later produced the fastest ball of the Indian T20 League 2024 as he clocked 156.7kph against Bengaluru at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan is third on the list of fastest Indian bowlers. The left-arm pacer recorded a 153.7 delivery against Pakistan during the inaugural edition of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007.

Mohammed Shami has bowled the third-fastest delivery among India's fast bowlers in world cricket. The right-arm fast bowler delivered a 153.3kph during the third Test against Australia in Melbourne in 2014. Shami was the standout bowler in the series as he picked 15 wickets in three Tests at an average of 35.80.

Speedster Jasprit Bumrah is fourth on the list of fastest Indian bowlers. Bumrah clocked 153.26kph during the first Test against Australia in Adelaide in 2018. Bumrah was the wrecker-in-chief for the Indian cricket team in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as he bagged 21 wickets in four matches at an impressive average of 17.

Navdeep Saini completes the top five list of fastest Indian bowlers in world cricket. Saini recorded a 152.85kph delivery during the 2019 edition of the Indian T20 League.

Interestingly, unofficial reports claim Javagal Srinath breached the 157kph mark during India’s tour of South Africa in 1996. However, the delivery hasn’t made it to the official list as the speed gun levels weren't as accurate.

The likes of Ishant Sharma, Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav have also breached 152kph in international cricket.

Team Kolkata will take on Team Mumbai in Match 14 of Indian T20 League 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Wednesday, April 6. The match will start at 7:30 PM IST.

While Mumbai have lost two games on the trot, Kolkata have won two of their three games thus far in Indian T20 League 2022.

Mumbai are favourites to win the tie based on their superior head-to-head against Kolkata - 22 wins in 29 meetings. However, Kolkata’s strong start to the latest season gives them a psychological edge heading into Wednesday’s fixture.

Kolkata vs Mumbai key player battles

Shreyas Iyer vs Jasprit Bumrah

Shreyas Iyer has begun his Kolkata career on a confident note as a batter and a captain. The Kolkata captain has scored 59 runs in three matches and will be eager to consolidate his head-to-head against Jasprit Bumrah.

In eight meetings, Iyer has hit 59 runs off 40 deliveries at a strike rate of 147.50. Bumrah, in turn, has dismissed the former just once. While he has grabbed three wickets in two Indian T20 League 2022 games, an economy rate of 8.18 is something Jasprit Bumrah will look to improve when facing Kolkata and Shreyas Iyer.

Rohit Sharma vs Umesh Yadav

With Rohit Sharma opening for Mumbai, Kolkata will look up to the experienced Umesh Yadav to keep the Hitman at bay.

In 14 head-to-head meetings, Rohit has hit 143 runs off 94 deliveries while being dismissed on four occasions. While the Mumbai captain has had a slow start to the latest campaign, Umesh Yadav currently leads the wickets charts with eight scalps and will be out to disrupt Rohit and Mumbai’s plans of scoring runs on a whim.

After years of hits and misses, Team Delhi reached their maiden finals of the Indian T20 League in the 2020 edition but finished as the second-best. This was seen as a sign of rejuvenation for a team that often stalled when a winning opportunity knocked on the door.

With Rishabh Pant taking over as Delhi captain in place of the injured Shreyas Iyer, onlookers are curious if the franchise can indeed end their title drought this year. However, considering their performances last term - where they lost just two league games in the first nine before winning one in the last five, consistency is something the 23-year-old will demand from his team-mates.

Delhi kick off their Indian T20 League 2021 season against Chennai at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday, April 10, and upon closer look of their squad depth, it is safe to say the franchise can possibly go the distance in the latest edition.

Team Delhi squad

Shreyas Iyer’s absence is a massive blow to Delhi’s batting strategy in the Indian T20 League but the team can somehow fill the void with some powerful knocks from Steve Smith - acquired for a meagre fee of Rs 2.20 crores.

The 2020 finalists retained 19 players and released six players - which included the likes of Alex Carey, Keemo Paul and Jason Roy - ahead of the February auctions.

With a purse of Rs 13.40 crores, Delhi weren’t expected to do much business but by adding Smith, Sam Billings (Rs 2 crores) and Umesh Yadav (Rs 1 crore), the team bolstered their options in the batting and pace bowling sector.

England all-rounder Tom Curran was the most expensive buy at Rs 5.25 crore and much will be expected from him in a pace line-up that consists of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Ishant Sharma, besides the 33-year-old Yadav.

Team Delhi squad for Indian T20 League 2021: Shreyas Iyer (ruled out), Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (captain and wicket-keeper), Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, Chris Woakes, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Amit Mishra, Lalit Yadav, Pravin Dubey, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Ishant Sharma, Avesh Khan, Steve Smith, Umesh Yadav, Ripal Patel, Vishnu Vinod, Lukman Meriwala, Manimaran Siddarth, Tom Curran, Sam Billings

Team Delhi strength and weakness

Strengths:

Delhi is one of the few teams whose batting line-up is quite intimidating, and their performances in the 2020 season showcased their intent to challenge for the title. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Rishabh Pant will be charged with laying the foundations for match-winning totals.

Prithvi Shaw, who had a forgettable campaign with Delhi last term, warmed up for the upcoming season with 800-plus runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and will look to prove his detractors wrong.

In Marcus Stoinis, Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel, Delhi have some quality all-rounders who can chip in runs and also take wickets to place the tide of an Indian T20 League in their favour.

The middle-order batters had smashed 1290 runs last season, the most by batsmen in the #4 - #7 slot and the addition of Sam Billings should give an exciting injection to Delhi.

Weakness:

The presence of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Ishant Sharma already made Delhi’s bowling attack something for opposition to fear. But, it is their tendency to leak runs in crucial periods - such as the death overs - which could ultimately cost them a win. They have conceded 595 runs in the powerplay overs - third-most by any team. Pant must devise an effective plan around his bowlers and see that his strengths in the batting and bowling departments are equally balanced.

For Rishabh Pant, there isn’t a recognised wicket-keeper back-up for him in the Delhi team. Considering the new captain will have new responsibilities to shoulder, and fatigue likely to take a toll on him, the Ricky Ponting-coached team will have to shift their team dynamics should they give the keeping duties to Sam Billings.

Who can be the highest run-scorer for Team Delhi?

Rishabh Pant has had an enjoyable 2021 so far, with a string of match-winning performances in the recent series against England convincing the management to hand him the reigns of the Delhi captaincy. The 23-year-old has stacked 2079 runs in just 68 games at an average and strike rate of 35.23 and 151.97 respectively, a sign that he is prepared to anchor Delhi’s charge for a maiden Indian T20 League crown.

Who can be the highest wicket-taker for Team Delhi?

Looking up at Delhi’s bowling options, one can simply say the Kagiso Rabada will be the champion bowler for the team in the 2021 edition. However, those who have followed the league closely, Amit Mishra will be the leading contender to play a key role in the upcoming campaign. The 38-year-old, with 160 wickets in the T20 extravaganza, featured in three games last term before a finger injury ended his campaign. Mishra is on the cusp of two major milestones - 11 wickets to become the highest wicket-taker in the Indian T20 League and five matches to become the first Delhi player with 100 appearances in the cash-rich league.

Where will Team Delhi finish in Indian T20 League 2021?

Delhi’s current team roster is an indication that they could make it into the playoffs round at the very least, and the presence of experienced figures in Dhawan, Ashwin, Smith and Rahane will be influential to their cause. But at the end of the day, it all comes down to perfect execution of their strengths and that is something Rishabh Pant will need to work in tandem with head coach Ricky Ponting.

Ahead of the fourth and final Test against England, India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been released from the squad due to personal reasons.

The 27-year-old was already rested for the five T20Is beginning on March 12, as part of the team’s workload management program.

Since August last year, the Gujarat-born cricketer has been inside the bio-secure bubble before the 2020 Indian T20 League campaign in the UAE.

Bumrah had bowled just six overs in the third Test and had gone wicketless on a dusty pitch at the newly reconstructed Motera stadium.

Virat Kohli-led side currently has plenty of options in their squad to replace Jasprit Bumrah. Here we look at three contenders who can replace Bumrah in the playing XI for the fourth Test.

Umesh Yadav

The right-arm pacer missed out on a spot in the third Test as Ishant Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah edged him to the side. With Bumrah not available for the final Test against England, there are high chances of Umesh featuring in the playing XI. He has perfectly complemented Bumrah and Ishant in the game's longest format, whenever given a chance. The 33-year-old has claimed 148 wickets in 48 Tests at an average of 30.55.

Mohammed Siraj

Mohammed Siraj has already played a Test in the ongoing series and had scalped one wicket in the first Test in Chennai. The 26-year-old has been impressive every time he has donned the Indian jersey and was the team’s highest wicket-taker in Australia, picking 13 wickets in three Tests at an average of 29.54. Siraj can be a perfect replacement for Bumrah in the fourth and final Test against England in Ahmedabad.

Kuldeep Yadav

The fourth Test will be played at the Motera Stadium, which has assisted spinners as seen in the third Test, and thus, team India could play as many as four spinners against England. The visitors were visibly struggling against Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin's impressive spin bowling, with the pair claiming 19 of the 20 wickets in the pink-ball Test. In his short Test career, Kuldeep has claimed 26 wickets in seven matches with two five-wicket hauls to his name.

The Indian cricket team has announced their 17-man squad for the remaining two Tests of the four-match series against England, to be played at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Pacer Umesh Yadav has been drafted into the Test squad for the third and fourth Tests in place of Shardul Thakur, who will be released to take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting from February 20.

Yadav will undergo a fitness assessment at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) before joining the team as he returns to competitive cricket after recovering from the calf injury he picked up during the Boxing Day Test against Australia.

"Umesh Yadav will join the team in Ahmedabad and after his fitness assessment will replace Shardul Thakur, who will be released for Vijay Hazare Trophy," said BCCI in a release.

The BCCI selection committee also picked five net bowlers and two players as standbys for the final two Tests.

Net Bowlers: Ankit Rajpoot, Avesh Khan, Sandeep Warrier, Krishnappa Gowtham, Saurabh Kumar

Standby players: KS Bharat, Rahul Chahar.

Meanwhile, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Shahbaz Nadeem and Priyank Panchal, who were standbys for the first two Tests have been released for the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

After suffering a 227-run defeat in the first Test, Virat Kohli-led Team India bounced back in emphatic fashion as the hosts thrashed England by 317 runs in the second to level the series 1-1 in Chennai.

India Test Squad for third and fourth Tests: Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Wriddhiman Saha (wicket-keeper), Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav (subject to fitness).

The Indian cricket team has included Thangarasu Natarajan and Shardul Thakur in their Test squad to face Australia for the remainder of the Test series. With veteran fast bowlers Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami side-lined with injuries, the visitors are short of experience in the bowling department.

Though an Ajinkya Rahane-masterclass in the Boxing Day Test match levelled the four-match Test series 1-1 for India, following a humiliating loss in the first Test match at Adelaide, the Men in Blue are running short of players and fast.

After Mohammed Shami got injured during the first Test match, Umesh Yadav became the latest player to join India’s injury list as he limped off the field with a calf injury during the second Test match. And BCCI has communicated that he won't be able to recover in time for the next two Test matches.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named T Natarajan as Yadav’s replacement. Ahead of the Boxing Day Test, Shardul Thakur was added to the Test squad as Mohd. Shami's replacement after the senior fast bowler suffered a hairline fracture in his right forearm,?BCCI’s media release read.

“Both Shami and Umesh Yadav will head to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for further rehabilitation of their injuries. Rohit Sharma has completed his quarantine and has now joined the Indian Cricket Team in Melbourne,?the release further read.

With debutants Mohammed Siraj and Shubman Gill performing exceedingly well in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, the selectors have been encouraged to put inexperienced T Natarajan and Shardul Thakur on the firing line.

While Natarajan's international experience is limited to just four matches, one ODI and three T20Is, all of which were played in ongoing India's tour of Australia, Thakur has played just one international Test match when India hosted West Indies in 2018.

However, while the situation in India’s bowling department is precarious, Rahane will feel relieved to welcome ace batsman Rohit Sharma to the squad who joins as the vice-captain.

India fast bowler Umesh Yadav ruled out of the remaining two Test matches against Australia as he is all set to return to India, reports ANI.

The 33-year-old had limped off with severe pain in his calf muscle on day 3 of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

According to the report, sources in the Indian camp confirmed that the seasoned pacer will now be aiming to recover in time for the England series in February.

"His scans came in and he will miss the third and fourth game. So, there was no point in holding him back and it is better that he returns to the country and undergoes rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He left on Wednesday night," the source told ANI.

The report further added that T Natarajan, who made his brilliant debut in the limited-over series against Australia, will replace Umesh Yadav in absence of limited options.

"With limited options available, the team management can ask for Natarajan to be added to the squad," the source said.

Yadav had played in both the opening two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21, claiming four wickets while bowling 39.4 overs. The Vidarbha pacer had scalped three wickets in the Pink-Ball Test in Adelaide which India lost by eight wickets.

Interestingly, the veteran fast bowler was in the middle of an excellent spell at the MCG when he experienced pain in his left leg and called for immediate medical attention. He later limped back to the dressing room.

“Umesh Yadav complained of pain in his calf while bowling his 4th over and was assessed by the BCCI medical team. He is being taken for scans now,?the BCCI had stated on their social media accounts on Monday.

The Indian cricket team is already missing the services of their experienced duo of Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma who have been sidelined due to injuries in the four-match Test series.

India fast bowler Umesh Yadav became the latest name on the team’s growing injury list in the ongoing Test series against Australia. With veteran pacers like Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma already out with injuries, Team India’s options are fast depleting.

The incident took place on the third day of the second Test during the eighth over of the Australian innings when Yadav was bowling to Matthew Wade. After bowling the third delivery of his fourth over, the 33-year-old was seen complaining about straining his left calf muscle.

The team physiotherapist rushed onto the field immediately and the bowler soon returned to the dressing room after a short discussion. Meanwhile, debutant Mohammed Siraj had to complete Yadav’s over.

The BCCI released an update on their social media accounts stating, “Umesh Yadav complained of pain in his calf while bowling his 4th over and was assessed by the BCCI medical team. He is being taken for scans now."

While fifth bowling option Ravindra Jadeja efficiently replaced Yadav for the rest of Day 3 ?taking two wickets in his 10 overs ?Virat Kohli-less India might have to do with just two fast bowlers for the remaining two days of the Boxing Day Test.

Interestingly, Yadav had given Team India their first breakthrough on the third day after the 33-year-old dismissed Joe Burns in his second over.

With Ishant Sharma already missing the entire series, India were also jolted by Mohammed Shami’s injury during the first Test match at the Adelaide Oval.

While bringing in an inexperienced Siraj hasn’t hurt the visitors yet, Umesh Yadav’s injury might force India to fall back on yet another bowler with little Test match experience in Navdeep Saini.

On the positive side, the Indian team management had asked T Natarajan, Shardul Thakur and Kartik Tyagi to stay back after the ODI and T20I series. In case the team’s injury list further expands, India can draft them in.

Ajinkya Rahane-led Team India are in a superior position after the end of Day 3 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. After taking a 131-run first-innings lead, Indian bowlers were at their best as they reduced Australia to 133/6 with two more days to go in the second Test match.

The Indian T20 League, since its inaugural edition in 2008, has been a breeding ground for young talents. Year after year, the lucrative T20 extravaganza has seen the passage of some of the top cricketing talents not just from the country, but across the globe.

Despite having its rule stated that a team can only field four foreign players in the starting XI, the scouting network has been such that at times, a gem has been unearthed. The league has provided a grand platform to the budding cricketers, and today, we take a look at five players who got their international call (in the T20I squad) due to the Indian T20 League.

Shaun Marsh

Shaun Marsh was not a name well known before the inaugural season of the Indian T20 League but following that first season with Punjab, he was definitely a talking point among cricket aficionados. In just 11 matches, Marsh racked up 616 runs as Punjab made it to the semi-finals. The Australian national team soon called and he was part of their tour of West Indies in 2008, where he reproduced his Indian T20 League form with a Man of the Match-worthy 81 runs on debut while his side won by 84 runs.

Glenn Maxwell

Thanks to his impressive showings in the Emerging Players Contest the year prior, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was picked by Delhi to make his Indian T20 League debut in 2012, coming on as a replacement for Travis Birt, who had withdrawn from the squad. That same year, Australia Head Selector John Inverarity picked Maxwell for the UAE tour, calling him ‘a versatile and lively off-spinning allrounder and brilliant fieldsman? After making his ODI debut against Afghanistan, he played a key role in winning two matches against Pakistan, and was subsequently picked for the 2012 ICC World T20 Cup squad as well.

Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh made his Indian T20 League debut in 2010 for Team Deccan before heading over to Pune following year. It was also when he got the call-up to represent Australia’s T20I and ODI squads in their tour of South Africa. After Australia won the first of T20I match in Cape Town, Marsh got to debut in their second match in Johannesburg with a 21-ball 36. Australia ended up losing and drawing the series but they won the ODI leg, where Marsh made the crucial contribution of Hashim Amla's wicket in the second ODI.

Murali Vijay

While Murali Vijay was already being considered for India’s Test and ODI teams since 2008, popular opinion was that his laconic style would not suit the T20 format too well. He put those assumptions to rest when he became a regular fixture for Chennai in the Indian T20 League, scoring 458 runs that year at a strike rate of 156.84, surpassing even Matthew Hayden. With an injury putting Virender Sehwag out of action for the ICC World T20 2010, Vijay, thanks to his Indian T20 League heroics, was deemed the perfect replacement, beating out Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey.

Umesh Yadav

Umesh Yadav a potent pacer who Team India had been seeking and while he didn’t overly impress during his stint with Delhi during the 2010 Indian T20 League season, it was his raw pace and his penchant for keeping the batsmen guessing that endeared him to India’s selectors. Thus, it followed that when Praveen Kumar got injured during that year’s World T20, Yadav got the call to fly to the Caribbean, eventually making his ODI debut during the Zimbabwe tour.

Up against the Punjab skipper, KL Rahul, the pacer over-pitched his delivery to an extent that not even Rahul, but wicketkeeper Josh Philippe couldn't help but to watch the ball sail towards the boundary.

And while the pacer was getting the heat, Bangalore captain Virat Kohli showcased a shocking display on the night.
