The Hagley Oval is one of the world’s oldest cricket grounds located in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Established in 1851, the Canterbury cricket team used the venue frequently until the 1920s.

Situated in the Hagley Park in the central city of Christchurch, the Hagley Oval has a seating capacity of 9,000 and is expandable to 18,000.

Hagley Oval staged its first international men’s cricket match, a one-day game played between Canada and Scotland during the 2014 Cricket World Cup Qualifier in January 2014. Scotland won the match by 170 runs.

It later staged its first Test played between hosts New Zealand and Sri Lanka in December 2014. The hosts won the Test by eight wickets. Since then, it has hosted 12 Test matches in men’s cricket.

In November 2019, the Hagley Oval staged its first T20 international as England beat New Zealand by seven wickets in that game.

During the second Test of Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand in 2021, the hosts posted a mammoth total of 659/6d after bowling out the visitors for 297 in their first innings. Captain Kane Williamson led from the front as he slammed 238 off 364 balls, along with contributions from Henry Nicholls (157) and Daryl Mitchell (102 not out) to help New Zealand register a record Test total at the venue. New Zealand later bundled out Pakistan for 188 in their second innings to win the  Christchurch Test by an innings and 176 runs.

Lowest total

The South Africa cricket team registered the lowest total at the Hagley Oval in Tests. The Dean Elgar-led visitors were skittled out for 95 in 49.2 overs during the first Test of South Africa’s tour of New Zealand in 2022. Zubayr Hamza top-scored for the Proteas with 25 while wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne added 18. For New Zealand, right-arm pacer Matt Henry was the wrecker-in-chief as he bagged seven wickets for just 23 runs. New Zealand posted 482 in their first innings to register a massive lead. The hosts later bowled out South Africa for 111 in their second innings to win the Test by an innings and 276 runs.

Most runs

New Zealand’s star cricketer Tom Latham has scored the most runs at this ground in cricket’s longest format. The wicketkeeper-batter has accumulated 971 runs in 12 Test matches at an average of 48.55. Latham has slammed two centuries and five fifties in this venue in Test cricket. New Zealand talisman Kane Williamson is second on the list with 696 runs in nine Test matches at an average of 49.71.

Most wickets

New Zealand captain Tim Southee picked up the most wickets at the Hagley Oval in Test cricket. Between 2014 and 2023, the right-arm fast bowler has scalped 59 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 21.64. He has claimed one four-wicket haul and four fifers at this venue in Tests. Compatriot Trent Boult features second on the list with 53 wickets in nine Tests.

Highest individual score

Tom Latham registered the highest individual score at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Opening the batting, captain Tom Latham led from the front as he hammered 252 against Bangladesh in the first innings of the second Test in January 2022. His magnificent double century was laced with 34 fours and two sixes to help New Zealand post a huge total of 521/6d. The hosts later bowled out Bangladesh for 126 and 278 in their two innings to win the Test by an innings and 117 runs.

Best bowling figures in an innings

New Zealand cricketer Matt Henry recorded the best bowling figures in an innings of a Test at this venue in 2022. The right-arm pacer registered brilliant figures of 7/23 to help bundle out South Africa for 95 in their first innings. Matt Henry dismissed opposition captain Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Zubayr Hamza, Kyle Verreynne, Kagiso Rabada, and Glenton Stuurman. New Zealand thrashed South Africa by an innings and 276 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The series later ended 1-1.

Best bowling figures in a match

New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson holds the record for the best bowling figures in a Test match at the Hagley Oval. The right-arm fast bowler took 11 wickets during the second Test of Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand in 2021. While Kyle Jamieson bagged five wickets for 69 runs in the first innings, he scalped another six wickets for 48 runs in the second innings. Jamieson’s incredible bowling performance helped New Zealand win the Test by an innings and 276 runs.

Highest partnership

New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls recorded the highest partnership at this ground in Test cricket. Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls forged a massive 369-run stand for the fourth wicket in their first innings of the second Test against Pakistan in 2021. Williamson slammed 238 while Nicholls scored 157. New Zealand won the Christchurch Test by an innings and 176 runs.

The Bangladesh vs New Zealand Test history began with their first-ever meeting in Hamilton in December 2001.

Under the leadership of Stephen Fleming, New Zealand thrashed Bangladesh by an innings and 52 runs in the first Test of a two-match series.

The hosts later hammered the Khaled Mashud-led Bangladesh by an innings and 74 runs in the second Test in Wellington to clinch the series 2-0.

Since then, Bangladesh and New Zealand have played 17 Tests against each other. 

The Kiwis have a dominant head-to-head record against Bangladesh in Test cricket, winning 13 of the 17 matches that they have contested so far. The Tigers have secured just a solitary victory while three matches have ended in draws.

During the first Test of Bangladesh’s tour of New Zealand in Hamilton in 2019, the hosts posted a mammoth total of 715/6d in their first innings having earlier bundled out the visitors for 234. New Zealand rode on captain Kane Williamson’s unbeaten 200, Tom Latham’s 161 and Jeet Raval’s 132 to record their highest total in Test cricket history. The hosts then once again bowled out Bangladesh for 429 in their second innings to win the Test by an innings and 52 runs. New Zealand later clinched the two-match Test series 2-0.

Lowest team total

The Bangladesh national cricket team registered the lowest team total in Bangladesh vs New Zealand Test history. After following on, the Khaled Mashud-led Bangladesh was skittled out for 108 in their second innings of the first Test in Hamilton in 2001 to suffer an innings defeat. Opening batter Al Sahariar was the top-scorer for Bangladesh with 53. For New Zealand, star all-rounder Chris Cairns was the wrecker-in-chief with seven scalps. Earlier, New Zealand managed 365/9d in their first innings before bowling out Bangladesh for 205. New Zealand won the Hamilton Test by an innings and 52 runs. The hosts also bagged the two-match Test series 2-0.

Most runs

Tamim Iqbal holds the record for the most runs in Bangladesh vs New Zealand Tests. Between 2008 and 2019, the Bangladesh cricketer amassed 908 runs in 11 Tests at an average of 45.40. Tamim slammed one hundred and eight fifties against New Zealand in Test cricket. He registered his highest score of 126 against the Kiwis in the first Test in Hamilton in 2019. For New Zealand, Ross Taylor scored the most runs against Bangladesh in Tests. He accumulated 746 runs in 11 Tests.

Most wickets

New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori took the most wickets in this Test fixture. The left-arm spinner picked 51 wickets in just nine Tests against Bangladesh at an average of 16.05 and a strike rate of 42.43. For Bangladesh, star left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan has the most wickets against New Zealand in Test cricket. Shakib has scalped 26 wickets in eight Tests at an average of 28.92.

Wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham holds the record for the highest individual score in Bangladesh vs New Zealand Tests. Best bowling figures in an innings

Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan has the best bowling figures in an innings in this Test fixture. During the first Test of New Zealand’s tour of Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2008, Shakib Al Hasan recorded figures of 7/36 to bowl out the visitors for 171 in their first innings. The left-arm spinner bagged the wickets of Aaron Redmond, Jamie How, Jesse Ryder, Brendon McCullum, Jacob Oram, Kyle Mills and Iain O'Brien. Despite Shakib’s incredible spell, New Zealand won the Chattogram Test by three wickets.

Best bowling figures in a match

Daniel Vettori holds the record for the best bowling figures in a match in Bangladesh vs New Zealand Tests. The left-arm spinner took 12 wickets for 170 runs during the second of New Zealand’s tour of Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2004. While Vettori bagged six wickets for 70 runs in the first innings, he bagged another six wickets for 100 runs in the second innings. New Zealand won the Test by an innings and 101 runs to clinch the two-match series 2-0.

Highest partnership

Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim hold the record for the highest partnership in Bangladesh vs New Zealand Tests. During the first Test of Bangladesh’s tour of New Zealand in Wellington in 2017, Shakib and Mushfiqur forged a 359-run partnership for the fifth wicket to help the visitors post 595/8d in their first innings. Shakib slammed 217, while Mushfiqur scored 159. The incredible partnership though went in vain as New Zealand won the Test by seven wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Reigning World Test Champions New Zealand will take on Bangladesh in a two-match Test series starting on Saturday, January 1.

The upcoming series will be part of the ongoing Word Test Championship cycle. 

Ahead of the series, the hosts have suffered a massive blow as their regular captain Kane Williamson has been ruled out due to an elbow injury. In Williamson’s absence, Tom Latham has been named captain for the two Test matches.

"It's obviously disappointing not to have Kane available for this series but, as we noted in India, he is undergoing a sustained period of rest followed by rehabilitation, strengthening and gradual batting loading,�?New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said.

On the other hand, veteran batter Ross Tayler has announced that the Bangladesh Test series will be his last in red-ball cricket. 

Meanwhile, wicket-keeper batter Devon Conway, who sustained a hand injury during the T20 World Cup 2021, has been added to the squad after missing the recent tour of India. 

Interestingly, left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel, who created history by becoming the third bowler to take 10 wickets in Test innings, has been excluded from the 13-man squad. 

Fast bowlers Trent Boult and Matt Henry have returned to the squad after they were rested for the two-match Test series against India.

Bangladesh have also announced their 18-member squad for the upcoming Test series. The Mominul Haque-led side has included star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan after much debate over his participation in the series. 

The visitors have excluded Saif Hassan, Rezaul Islam Raza and Naim Hassan from the squad while added fast bowler Shoriful Islam for the New Zealad tour.

The New Zealand cricket team suffered a massive blow after their captain Kane Williamson was ruled out of the second and final Test against England at Edgbaston with an elbow injury.

Left-handed opening batsman Tom Latham will lead the Kiwis in the absence of the New Zealand captain.

Head coach Gary Stead stated that the tough decision to keep Williamson out was taken keeping in mind the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) final against India starting on June 18.

"It's not an easy decision for Kane to have to miss a Test, but we think it's the right one," New Zealand coach Gary Stead said in a statement on Wednesday.

"He's had an injection in his elbow to relieve the irritation he's been experiencing when he bats and a period of rest and rehabilitation will help maximise his recovery."

"The decision has been made very much with the ICC World Test Championship final at Southampton in mind and we are confident he will be ready for that match starting on June 18,�?Stead added.

Meanwhile, Will Young will replace Kane Williamson at number three in the batting line-up at Edgbaston starting on June 10. Young has been in great form after he scored two centuries for English county side Durham.

The Blackcaps will also miss the services of their spinner Mitchell Santner who has been ruled out with a cut finger. New Zealand will be forced to make at least two changes to the team that played in the first Test.

However, left-arm fast bowler Trent Boult is expected to return to the playing XI after missing the Lord's Test as he chose to spend time with his family following the suspension of the Indian T20 League.

There are very few ways to beat India in One Day International cricket these days. The tried and tested success formula include dismissing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli early, a mind-blowing partnership from the top of the order (think Jason Roy - Jonny Bairstow in the World Cup or the David Warner - Aaron Finch stand in Mumbai last month) or a brilliant individual performance (Shimron Hetmyer's 139 in Chennai being a standout example).

After another win at the Eden Park - with Taylor once again shining - Latham and Taylor remain India’s biggest headache from an opposition side in recent times.
