Australian cricket is mourning after former Test opener Keith Stackpole passed away on Tuesday, April 22, after a suspected heart attack. He played 43 Test matches for Australia from 1966 to 1974. During that time, he made 2,807 runs, scoring seven centuries with an average of 37.42.

Stackpole grew up in Collingwood, Melbourne. He started playing for Victoria in 1964 and later led the team to a Sheffield Shield title win in 1973-74. He also joined Australia’s ODI lineup from 1971 to 1974 before retiring. After cricket, he became a respected voice in the sport's commentary box for ABC, Channel 9, and Seven.

A look back at Stacky’s cricket legacy

Stackpole had many big moments in the Ashes. In the 1970-71 Ashes, he hit his career-best 207 runs in the first Test at Brisbane, even after a close run-out call. He continued his form in the 1972 Ashes in England as Ian Chappell’s vice-captain. He led the series with 485 runs, averaging 53.88—topping the Australian batting average record.

He was later named the ‘Wisden’s Cricketer of the Year?in 1973. Locally, Stackpole also won the Ryder Medal thrice as the best player in Melbourne’s district cricket contest.

Cricketer friends paid tribute to the legend. Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird shared, ‘Keith was one of the great contributors to the game of cricket and his legacy will live long into the future?

Cricket is among the world’s most popular sports, highlighting the tough battles of skill, pride, and history that unite millions of fans worldwide. Every match carries the weight of past victories and bittersweet defeats, which shows that the game is more than just runs and batting.

Some of the most thrilling moments in cricket come from rivalries—clashes that go beyond the field. Fans, media, and even former players carry the rivalry forward, adding to the sport’s legacy. Find out some of cricket’s biggest rivalries, historic battles, and moments that continue to shape the game.

India vs Pakistan: The ultimate clash

Only a few cricket rivalries could be as intense as India vs Pakistan. This clash goes beyond the game, rooted in the political tensions and historical events dating back to the 1947 partition of British India.

Due to political issues, bilateral series between India and Pakistan are rare. Most of their meetings take place in ICC tournaments, with their most recent face-off on February 23, 2025, during the ICC Champions Trophy group stage.

Iconic matches

  • 2007 T20 World Cup Final

India and Pakistan clashed in the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup final, where the former clinched the first-ever T20 World Cup title. Pakistan fell short by just five runs, with Misbah-ul-Haq infamously attempting a scoop shot but getting dismissed.

  • 2021 T20 World Cup

In a historic match at Dubai International Stadium, Pakistan secured its first-ever World Cup win against India. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan quickly chased the target at 152/0, leading the team to a 10-wicket win against the Kohli-led Indian team. Pakistan secured its first-ever win against their fierce rivals, effectively knocking them out of the T20 World Cup.

Australia vs England: The Ashes

The Ashes is one of the oldest rivalries in cricket, dating back to 1882 when Australia stunned England at the Kennington Oval in London.

The Sporting Times, then, published a mock obituary mourning the ‘death?of English cricket with a note: ?..The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia? Since then, the two teams battled in a five-Test series every two years to continue the tradition.

Remarkable Ashes moments

  • The Ball of the Century (1993)

In the first Test of the Ashes series at Old Trafford, an inexperienced Shane Warne bowled a legendary delivery. His sharp leg break to Mike Gatting spun wildly and clipped off the stump. Gatting was stunned, and the crowd was in disbelief at Warne’s unbelievable skill.

  • The Bodyline Series (1932-33)

The 1932-33 Ashes series is known for England’s tough ‘bodyline?tactics against Australia’s star batter, Don Bradman. Harold Larwood led England’s bowlers, targeting batters with fast, short-pitched balls, causing many injuries. England still won the five-Test series 4-1, but the tactic sparked conflicts and led to rule changes in cricket.

Australia vs New Zealand: Trans-Tasman Tussle

The Australia vs New Zealand clash is fierce across many sports, but in cricket, it’s grown into one intense sibling battle. The two teams first played in 1878, but official Test matches between them began in 1945-46. While Australia governed the early years, New Zealand became a strong force that made their ODI and T20 clashes even fiercer.

Legendary Trans-Tasman clashes

  • 2003 Cricket World Cup: The Showdown

During the Super Sixes stage, NZ’s Shane Bond and AUS’s Brett Lee showcased top-tier fast bowling. Bond toppled 6 wickets for 23 with AUS reeling at 84 for 7. However, a 97-run stand from Michael Bevan and Andy Bichel guided the team to their match win, posting a total of 208/9.

  • 2015 Cricket World Cup final: The Left-Arm Pacer

Australia and New Zealand met in the 2015 Cricket World Cup final in Melbourne. Pacer Mitchell Starc dismissed NZ captain Brendon McCullum for a duck in the first over. New Zealand managed 183, with Grant Elliott scoring 83, as Australia chased the target in 33.1 overs, which led them to a seven-wicket win.

Clashes that define icons

Cricket’s greatest rivalries are built on history and passion, where each match fuels the fire among teams and fans. As the sport evolves, these fiery battles will continue to shape cricket’s rich legacy.

Widely regarded as the biggest Test rivalry in cricket, the upcoming Ashes series will witness some of world’s top batters produce scintillating knocks to help their respective sides post a big total on the board.

England talisman Joe Root, Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Harry Brook, captain Ben Stokes and wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow will play a key role in the batting department for the hosts during the five-match Test series.

Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope head into Ashes 2023 high on confidence after slamming big hundreds against Ireland in the recently-concluded one-off Test. While Duckett scored 182, Pope hammered a double hundred (205) to help England register a dominating 10-wicket win.

On the other hand, batters Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, David Warner, Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey will play a pivotal role for Australia in Ashes 2023.

Steve Smith has a sensational batting record in Ashes history. The Australian talisman has already amassed more than 3,000 runs in 34 Ashes Tests at an impressive average of 58-plus. He has hit 12 centuries and 11 fifties so far.

The Women’s Ashes 2023 has reached its final leg with the upcoming three-match ODI series between hosts England and Australia starting on Wednesday, July 12.

Under the leadership of Heather Knight, England Women bounced back in the ongoing Women’s Ashes series after clinching the recently-concluded three-match T20I series 2-1.

The Alyssa Healy-led Australia Women earlier defeated England Women by 89 runs in the one-off Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

While Australia have a 6-4 lead in the Women’s Ashes 2023, six points are still up for grabs with three results still technically possible.

However, England Women need to register a 3-0 clean sweep in the upcoming three-match ODI series in order to reclaim the Ashes for the first time since 2014.

Meanwhile, the England women’s cricket team has named their 15-member squad for the upcoming ODI series.

Wicketkeeper-batter Tammy Beaumont has been recalled to the England Women ODI squad after scoring a double hundred in the Ashes Test. Pacer Lauren Filer has also been added to the squad after her impressive showing in the Trent Bridge Test.

On the other hand, the Australian women’s cricket team will once again be led by Alyssa Healy in the three-match ODI series.

The first ODI of the Women’s Ashes series will be played at County Ground in Bristol, before the two teams clash at The Rose Bowl in Southampton for the second ODI. The Women’s Ashes 2023 ODI series final will be hosted at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton on July 18.

Adam Gilchrist | 57 balls vs England, Perth, 2006

Legendary Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist etched his name in the history books after he smashed the fastest hundred in Ashes history. With a 2-0 lead in the five-match Ashes Test series, the hosts opted to bat first in the third Test at Perth. Australia were later bowled out for 244, while England managed 215 in their first innings. In the second innings, Australia rode on centuries from Michael Hussey (103) and Michael Clarke (135) to put the hosts in a commanding position. Later, Gilchrist inflicted more misery on the England bowlers as he clobbered a blitzkrieg hundred off just 57 balls. Gilchrist remained not out on 102 with 12 fours and four sixes as Australia declared their innings at 527/5. The hosts bowled out England for 350 in their second innings to secure a massive 206-run victory. Australia went on to win the Ashes series 5-0.

Gilbert Jessop | 74 balls vs Australia, London, 1902

Former England cricketer Gilbert Jessop previously held the record for the fastest hundred in Ashes. Chasing a target of 263 in the fourth innings of a Headingley Test in 1902, England were reduced to 48/5 before Gilbert Jessop played a knock for the ages. Batting at number seven, Jessop hammered a 74-ball hundred to bring the hosts back into the game. Having batted for 77 minutes, Jessop slammed 17 boundaries before he was dismissed for 104. Jessop’s scintillating hundred helped England secure a thrilling one-wicket win in London. This is still the fastest Ashes hundred scored by an English batter. Despite winning the fifth Test at The Oval, England went down 1-2 to Australia in the five-match Ashes Test series.

Travis Head | 85 balls vs England, Brisbane, 2021

Australia’s Travis Head joined this illustrious list after he recorded the joint-third fastest hundred in Ashes history. The southpaw scored a hundred off just 85 balls against a star-studded England bowling line-up during the first Test of England’s tour of Australia in Brisbane in 2021. After bowling out England for 147 in their first innings, Australia took a massive lead courtesy Travis Head’s big hundred. Head scored 152 off 148 balls to power Australia to 425 in their first innings. Head’s brilliant knock included 14 fours and four sixes. Australia later won the Brisbane Test by nine wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The hosts clinched the series 4-0.

The Australian cricket team pulled off an incredible 43-run victory over arch-rivals England in a thrilling second Test at Lord’s to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ongoing five-match Ashes series.

Chasing a target of 371 in the fourth innings, the England cricket team was quickly reduced to 45/4 in 12.5 overs. However, England captain Ben Stokes produced a knock for the ages at Lord’s to keep the hosts in the game.

Having accomplished a similar miracle in the Headingley Test during the 2019 Ashes series, Ben Stokes slammed his 13th Test hundred as the match headed towards another nail-biting finish on the fifth and final day.

Stokes was later dismissed by Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood for 155 off 214 balls as England lost their seventh wicket still 70 runs short of their required target.

The Australian pace attack soon wrapped up England’s second innings to register a 43-run win at the iconic venue. The Pat Cummins-led Australia earlier secured a thrilling two-wicket win over England at Edgbaston in the opening Test of Ashes 2023.

With Australia winning at Lord’s, there have been seven occasions when a team took a 2-0 lead in the five-match Ashes series since 2000.

Australia have achieved the feat on six instances, while England have recorded it only once in 2013.

During those occasions, none of the opposing teams even managed to level the five-match Ashes series 2-2.

Talking about Ashes in England, the ongoing series is the third instance when a team has taken a 2-0 lead since the turn of the century.

Under the tutelage of head coach Brendon McCullum, England needs a miracle to overturn the 2-0 deficit and win the ongoing 2023 Ashes. So, the biggest question in everyone’s mind right now is - has any team come from 2-0 down to win an Ashes series?

Has any team come from 2-0 down to win an Ashes series?

Only one team came from 2-0 down to win an Ashes series since the first edition in 1882-83.

Led by captain Don Bradman, the Australian cricket team achieved the rare feat during the 1936-37 Ashes series.

During the first Test of the 1936-37 Ashes series, England thrashed Australia by 322 runs in Brisbane to go 1-0 up in the five-match series.

The visitors continued their impressive form in the second Test as they hammered Australia by an innings and 22 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the Ashes series.

However, the Don Bradman-led Australia accomplished the ultimate comeback in the remaining three Tests to win the 1936-37 Ashes series at home.

Australia beat England by 365 runs in the third Test in Melbourne, before registering a 148-run win in the fourth Test in Adelaide to level the series 2-2.

Heading into the final Test in Melbourne, Australia produced another scintillating performance to annihilate England by an innings and 200 runs to clinch the Ashes series 3-2 in March 1937.

The hosts won the series courtesy Don Bradman’s brilliance with the bat in the final three Tests. The legendary Australian batter played match-winning knocks of 270, 212 and 169 to help Australia stage a comeback for the ages.

Leonard Hutton | 364 vs Australia, The Oval, 1938

Leonard Hutton etched his name in the history books after he recorded the highest individual score in Ashes in 1938. After trailing 1-0 in the five-match Ashes Test series against, England captain Wally Hammond won the toss and opted to bat in the final Test at The Oval. Having lost an early wicket, Leonard Hutton and Maurice Leyland stitched an incredible 382-run partnership for the second wicket. While Leyland departed for 187, Hutton continued his sensational innings to bring up a magnificent triple hundred. Hutton then broke Bradman's record Ashes score of 334, before he was dismissed for 364. Hutton’s innings included 35 fours and lasted for more than 13 hours, having faced 847 balls. It remains the most runs scored in a Test innings by an English player. Hutton’s innings helped England beat Australia by an innings and 579 runs to draw the five-match series 1-1.

Former Australia cricketer Don Bradman has the second-highest individual score in Ashes history. During the third Test of Australia’s tour of England in 1930, a young Don Bradman took his batsmanship to the next level as he hammered 334 off just 448 balls at Headingley in Leeds. Interestingly, he scored 309 of those runs in a day’s play and he remains the only Test player to do so. Bradman’s 334 became a world record as he overtook the previous highest of 325 scored by England cricketer Andy Sandham. Despite Bradman’s record knock, the Headingley Test ended in a draw due to inclement weather.

Bob Simpson | 311 vs England, Manchester, 1964

Former Australia captain Bob Simpson features third on the list for highest individual scores in Ashes. Electing to bat first in the fourth Test of the 1964 Ashes series in Manchester, Bob Simpson played a knock for the ages as he converted his maiden Test ton to a triple hundred. The right-handed batter scored 311 to power Australia to a mammoth total of 656/8d. Having faced 743 balls during his 13-hour innings, Simpson slammed 23 fours and one six to record his highest individual score in Test cricket. He also became just the second Australian after Don Bradman to score a triple century in England. Simpson’s batting effort ensured the match ended in a draw and Australia retained the Ashes courtesy their 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

The Australian cricket team recorded their highest successful chase in Ashes in almost 75 years to pull off a thrilling two-wicket win against England in the first Test of Ashes 2023 at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, England.

Chasing a target of 281, Australia were reduced to 227/8 heading into the final session on the fifth day.

Australia captain Pat Cummins (44 not out) and Nathan Lyon (16 not out) later stitched a match-winning 55-run stand for the ninth wicket to guide the visitors to a nail-biting victory and also take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series.

Interestingly, the 2023 Edgbaston Ashes Test had several similarities with the historic 2005 Edgbaston Test played during Ashes 2005.

During the 2005 Edgbaston Ashes Test, England beat Australia by two runs in one of the most epic Test matches played in the history of the sport. That memorable Test win helped England clinch the 2005 Ashes Test series 2-1.

Both the 2023 Edgbaston Ashes Test and the 2005 Edgbaston Test produced pulsating action and fascinating drama throughout the game.

Here we look at some of the similarities between the 2005 and the 2023 Edgbaston Ashes Tests.

Similarities between Edgbaston Ashes Tests of 2005 and 2023

England’s aggressive batting approach on Day 1

Even before Bazball, the Michael Vaughan-led England played with similar aggressive intent on the first day of the Edgbaston Test in 2005. Put in to bat, England amassed 132/1 in 27 overs at a run rate of 4.89 at Lunch on Day 1. In 2023, Ben Stokes?men piled on 124/3 in 26.4 overs in the first session.

Similarly in 2005, England were bowled out for 407 in 79.2 overs at a run rate of 5.13, while they declared for 393/8 after 78 overs at a run rate of 5.03 in 2023.

Later, Australian openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja added unbeaten 14 runs before the end of day’s play in the 2023 Test. Thus, 407 runs were scored on Day 1 of both the Test matches at Edgbaston in 2005 and 2023.

Australia pacer’s expensive spell in first innings

During the 2005 Edgbaston Ashes Test, Australia speedster Brett Lee conceded 111 runs in his 17 overs at an economy of 6.52 in the first innings. Lee bagged his only wicket of Kevin Pietersen in the 67th over.

Meanwhile, Australia’s fast bowler Scott Boland gave away 86 runs in his 14 overs at an economy of 6.14 against England in the first innings of the 2023 Edgbaston Ashes Test. Boland also picked up one wicket in the first innings, dismissing England opener Zak Crawley.

No.1 Test batter dismissed for a duck

Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who was the then No.1 ranked Test batter, was dismissed for a duck in the second innings of 2005 Edgbaston Ashes Test.

Similarly in 2023, current world number one Test batter, Marnus Labuschagne, perished for a golden duck in the first innings.

Almost identical targets to chase in fourth innings

In yet another similarity, Australia was asked to chase almost identical targets in 2005 and 2023. In 2005, Australia needed to chase 282 to win the Edgbaston Test. However, the visitors fell short by just two runs.

On the other hand, Australia chased down 281 to pull off a nail-biting two-wicket victory in 2023.

Furthermore, in both run chases, Australia forged a decent opening partnership in the fourth innings.

While Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden stitched a 47-run stand in 2005, David Warner and Usman Khawaja added 61 runs for the opening stand.

Both Tests also witnessed solid contributions from the Australian lower order in the final innings of the match.

After being reduced to 175/8 in 2005, Shane Warne and Brett Lee forged a 45-run stand for the ninth wicket before the latter and Michael Kasprowicz combined for a further 59 runs for the final wicket as the Aussies fell short by a tantalising two runs.

The 2023 epic between England and Australia witnessed skipper Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon put on an unbeaten 55-run stand to guide the Aussies from 227/8 to a two-wicket win.

The Australian cricket team holds the record for the highest successful run chase in Ashes.

Led by captain Don Bradman, Australia successfully chased down 404 against arch-rivals England at the Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds in 1948. Don Bradman’s Australia is still the only side to successfully chase down in excess of 400 runs in the fourth innings of an Ashes Test.

In 2019, the Joe Root-led England cricket team etched their name into the history books as they chased down 359 in the fourth innings of an Ashes Test at the Headingley. It remains England’s highest successful run chase in an Ashes match.

Let’s have a look at some of the highest successful run chases in Ashes history.
