The MA Chidambaram Stadium is an iconic cricket ground located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Popularly known as the Chepauk Stadium, the MA Chidambaram Stadium was established in 1916. It is India’s second oldest cricket stadium after Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Owned and operated by Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), the stadium is located at Chepauk, a few hundred metres from Marina beach along the Bay of Bengal.

The MA Chidambaram Stadium is named after Muthiah Annamalai Chidambaram, the former president of BCCI and Head of TNCA. It was formerly named as Madras Cricket Club Ground.

It is the home ground of the Tamil Nadu cricket team in domestic cricket and Team Chennai in the Indian T20 League.

The MA Chidambaram Stadium staged its first international match, a Test played between Douglas Jardine's England and CK Nayudu's India in February 1934. England won the Test by 202 runs.

Since then, it has hosted more than 35 Test matches so far. It has also staged several ODIs and T20 internationals in men’s cricket.

Highest total

The Indian cricket team holds the record for the highest total at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Test cricket. During the fifth Test of England’s tour of India in December 2016, the Virat Kohli-led hosts posted a mammoth 759/7d after bowling out England for 477. Karun Nair’s unbeaten triple century (303 not out), KL Rahul’s 199 and fifties from Parthiv Patel (71), Ravichandran Ashwin (67) and Ravindra Jadeja (51) powered India to a record Test total at the venue. England were later bundled out for 207 in their second innings as India won the Chennai Test by an innings and 75 runs.

Lowest total

India have also registered the lowest total at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Test cricket. Chasing 284 in the fourth innings, the Bishan Bedi-led side was skittled out for 83 in the third Test of England’s tour of India in January 1977. Sunil Gavaskar top-scored for India with 24 while Mohinder Amarnath scored 12. For England, left-arm spinner Derek Underwood was the wrecker-in-chief with four wickets while fast bowler Bob Willis picked up three scalps. Earlier, India could only manage 164 in their first innings after England posted 262. The visitors later scored 185/9d in their second innings to set-up a target of 284. 

Most runs

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar scored the most runs at this ground in cricket’s longest format in Chennai. Between 1973 and 1987, the legendary batter accumulated 1,018 runs in 12 Tests at an average of 59.88, including three centuries and just as many fifties at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in red-ball cricket. Another Indian batting great, Sachin Tendulkar, features second on the list with 970 runs in 10 matches at an impressive average of 88.18 between 1993 and 2013. He slammed five hundreds and two fifties at this venue in Tests. 

Most wickets

Legendary India cricketer Anil Kumble claimed the most wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Test cricket. The former leg-spinner bagged 48 Test wickets in just eight matches between 1993 and 2008 at an average of 19.56. Kumble took five five-wicket hauls at this iconic venue in cricket’s longest format. His best bowling figures (7/48) at this ground in Tests came against Australia in October 2004. His former teammate Harbhajan Singh is second on the list with 42 wickets in seven Tests at an average of 28.04.

Highest individual score

Former Indian opening batter Virender Sehwag registered the highest individual score at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in the Test format. Opening the innings alongside Wasim Jaffer, Virender Sehwag slammed 319 off just 304 balls against South Africa in March 2008. Sehwag's magnificent triple century was laced with 42 fours and five maximums in Chennai. After South Africa posted 540, India recorded 627 in their first innings courtesy Sehwag’s triple hundred. The visitors declared their second innings at 331/5 as the first Test of a three-match series ended in a draw.

Best bowling figures in an innings

Former India all-rounder Vinoo Mankad recorded the best bowling figures in an innings of a Test at this venue in 1952. The former left-arm spinner registered match-winning figures of 8/55 to help restrict England for 266 in their first innings. Vinoo Mankad dismissed Tom Graveney, Jack Robertson, Allan Watkins, Cyril Poole, captain Donald Carr, Malcolm Hilton, Brian Statham and Fred Ridgway. Mankad also picked up four wickets in the second innings as India won the Test by an innings and eight runs in Chennai.

Best bowling figures in a match

India’s Narendra Hirwani holds the record for the best bowling figures in a Test match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The former India leg-spinner took 16 wickets during the fourth Test of West Indies�?tour of India in 1988. While Hirwani scalped eight wickets for 61 runs in the first innings, he bagged eight wickets for 75 runs in the second innings. Hirwani’s incredible bowling performance helped India win the Test by a massive 255 runs.

Highest partnership

Former Indian cricketers Gundappa Viswanath and Yashpal Sharma recorded the highest partnership at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Test cricket. During the fifth Test of England’s tour of India in 1982, Gundappa Viswanath and Yashpal Sharma forged a massive 316-run stand for the third wicket in their first innings. Viswanath slammed 222 while Sharma scored 140. The match later ended in a draw in Chennai.

It drastically changed the nature of cricket by increasing players�?salaries, triggered bidding wars and helped in popularizing the game across the globe. He was instrumental in introducing day-night cricket, coloured jerseys and limited-overs cricket. These changes helped attract young cricket fans to follow the sport. Packer also played a major role in saving the game of cricket from financial turmoil. For these reasons, Kerry Packer can be considered the Godfather of Cricket.

William Gilbert Grace 

Former English cricketer William Gilbert Grace is another prime contender for the title Godfather of Cricket. Considered to be one of England’s greatest players, William Grace played a significant role in the development of the sport. In his illustrious career, Grace scored over 54,000 first-class runs across 44 seasons from 1865 to 1908. In his time, the English cricketer captained England, Gloucestershire, the Gentlemen, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the United South of England Eleven (USEE), and numerous other teams. Known for his technical innovations and massive influence, Grace left a lasting legacy.

Don Bradman

Widely regarded as the greatest batter of all time, former Australian cricketer Sir Donald George Bradman can also be considered for the title Godfather of Cricket. During his 20-year playing career, Don Bradman scored 6,996 runs in 52 Test matches at an astonishing average of 99.94, which is often considered by some as one of the greatest achievements by any sportsperson. Sunil Gavaskar 

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was given the title - Godfather of Indian Cricket - by legendary West Indies cricketer Viv Richards. After making his Test debut against West Indies in 1971, Sunil Gavaskar was widely admired for his technique against fast bowling. He dominated a four-pronged West Indies�?fast bowling attack, having scored at an impressive average of 65.45. He became the first batter to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Gavaskar ended his legendary career with 10,122 runs in 125 Tests to be acknowledged as one of the greatest opening batters of all time.

MS Dhoni

In modern-day cricket, former India captain MS Dhoni has been given the title ‘Godfather of Team India�? After the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble retired, MS Dhoni guided the Indian cricket team to new heights in world cricket. Under his incredible leadership, Team India won the T20 World Cup in 2007. Four years later, India ended their 28-year drought to win the ICC ODI World Cup for the second time in 2011. The Men in Blue later clinched the Champions Trophy held in England and Wales in 2013. Dhoni later vacated Test captaincy at the right time to handover the mantle to Virat Kohli. While he was still an integral member in limited-overs format, he also gave up his captaincy in ODI and T20 formats for a smooth transition. Former legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar has the record for the most centuries for India in Test cricket. 

Widely regarded as arguably the greatest batter of all time, Sachin Tendulkar slammed 51 centuries, the most by any player in Test history. 

Former South African star all-rounder Jacques Kallis is second on the all-time list with 45 Test hundreds while former Australia captain Ricky Ponting features third with 41 Test tons.

Current Indian cricket team head coach and former captain Rahul Dravid holds the record for the second-most centuries for India in Test cricket.

Between 1996 and 2012, Dravid hit 36 Test centuries in his legendary international career.

Among active cricketers, talisman Virat Kohli has the most centuries for India in Tests. Kohli has registered 29 Test centuries in 113 matches since making his Test debut in 2011.

Sachin Tendulkar | 51 Test centuries

Sachin Tendulkar is the only player to have scored 50 centuries in Test cricket. After making his Test debut against arch-rivals Pakistan in Karachi in November 1989, Tendulkar cemented his place on top of the most tons charts by an Indian when he broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record for the most centuries in Test cricket history in December 2005. Tendulkar notched up his 35th Test ton against Sri Lanka in Delhi as he surpassed Gavaskar’s record of 34 Test centuries. He ended his illustrious career with 51 Test centuries in 200 matches, which is still a record in cricket’s longest format.

Rahul Dravid | 36 Test centuries

Rahul Dravid features second on the list for the most centuries for India in Test cricket. Often referred to as ‘The Wall�? Rahul Dravid slammed 36 Test centuries in the 163 matches that he played in his magnificent career. The former India cricket team captain is fifth on the all-time list for most Test centuries, only behind Tendulkar, Kallis, Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara. 

Sunil Gavaskar | 34 Test centuries

Acknowledged as one of the greatest opening batters of all time, Sunil Gavaskar has the third-most centuries for India in Test cricket. Between 1971 and 1987, Gavaskar hit 34 Test centuries in 125 matches. Interestingly, Gavaskar’s all-time record of 34 Test hundreds stood for almost 20 years before Sachin Tendulkar surpassed his record in December 2005.

Shubman Gill rose to fame in the 2018 edition of the Under-19 Cricket World Cup, just like Kohli did at the same tournament in 2008.

Gill was adjudged the Player of the Series in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup after he finished as the second-highest run-getter in the marquee ICC tournament. 

He scored 372 runs in six matches at a staggering average of 124 and an impressive strike rate of 112,38, including one hundred and three fifties to his name.

In January 2019, Gill received his maiden team India call-up for the limited-over series against New Zealand.

Gill later made his One Day International (ODI) debut in the fourth match of the series at Seddon Park in Hamilton.

In August 2019, Gill scripted history by becoming the youngest Indian batter to smash a double hundred in a First-Class match.

At the age of 19 years and 334 days, the right-handed batter slammed 204 runs for India A against West Indies A at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago.

Following his impressive showing at the First-Class level, Gill later made his Test debut against Australia in a Boxing Day Test in Melbourne in 2020.

In January 2023, Gill made his T20 International debut against Sri Lanka.

Few days later on January 18, Gill became the fifth Indian batter to score a double century in ODI cricket and the youngest one to do so.

The opening batter continued his sensational form as he slammed his maiden T20I hundred against New Zealand on February 1.

He became the fifth Indian batter to register a hundred in all formats of international cricket. 

With such consistent performances across formats, the Indian media has been constantly referring to Gill as the Prince of Indian cricket.

Previously, former India cricketer Salim Durani was hailed as Prince of Cricket in India. The Afghan-born cricketer was often called Shehzada (Prince) Salim of cricket.

Furthermore, former Indian cricketers including 2011 World Cup-winner Yuvraj Singh have touted Gill as the “New Prince of Indian Cricket.�?/span>

No player relished the challenge of squaring off against West Indies�?fearsome four of Roberts, Holding, Croft, and Garner more than Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar. In an era where wearing helmets wasn’t the norm, Gavaskar used to play West Indies�?fearsome pace attack without one and excelled while doing so as his 2,749 runs in 27 matches demonstrate. Gavaskar’s run tally isn’t just the most runs by an Indian batter against the Windies but also the most by any player in the history of the game. He struck 13 hundreds and seven fifties against the Windies at an average of 65.45. It often seemed that playing the Windies brought out the best in Gavaskar, whose highest score against the Men from the Caribbean is an unbeaten 236 which came in a drawn encounter. Gavaskar, in fact, boasts three double tons against West Indies in Tests.

Rahul Dravid | 1,978 runs in 23 matches

Another Indian great who thrived while battling the Windies bowlers was Rahul Dravid. Nicknamed the Wall for his outstanding defence, Dravid enjoyed playing against West Indies and totalled 1,978 runs in 23 matches at an average of 63.80 against the Men from the Caribbean. He made a highest score of 146 against them in a drawn game in 2006 and also registered five hundreds as well as 13 half-centuries versus the Windies.

VVS Laxman | 1,715 in 22 matches

Dravid’s contemporary VVS Laxman comes in third on this list of most runs for India versus West Indies in Tests. A crafty middle-order batter who made the Test arena his own, VVS Laxman scored 1,715 in 22 matches at an average of 57.16 against West Indies. He scored four hundreds and 11 fifties against the Windies, including a highest score of 176 not out against them in a winning cause at the Eden Gardens in 2011.

Former England cricket team captain Joe Root recently became the 14th player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket.

Root achieved the feat on the fourth day of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s Cricket Ground. His unbeaten 115 helped England secure an incredible five-wicket win over the reigning World Test Champions.

At 31 years and 157 days, Root also became the joint-youngest player to reach the milestone, equalling the record of his former teammate Alastair Cook, who also achieved the feat at exactly the same age.

Root has now amassed 10,015 runs in 118 Test matches at an impressive average of 49.58. He has hit 26 hundreds and 53 half-centuries in his career so far.

India cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar was the first player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. The former India opener etched his name into the history books on March 7, 1987 after he reached the incredible milestone against Pakistan in his 124th Test in Ahmedabad.

Gavaskar ended his career with 10,122 runs in 125 matches at an average of 51.12. He registered 34 centuries and 45 fifties to his name.

Former West Indies cricketer Brian Lara is the fastest to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Lara achieved the feat against England in his 111th match in Manchester in 2004.

Former India batter Sachin Tendulkar has recorded the most centuries in Test cricket. Regarded as one of the greatest batters in cricket history, Tendulkar smashed 51 hundreds in the longest format of the game. 

Having made his Test debut against Pakistan in 1989, the right-hander amassed 15,921 runs in 200 Test matches at an impressive average of 53.78 with 68 fifties to his name. It is still the all-time highest runs scored in Test cricket.

The Maharashtra-born cricketer also holds the record for the highest run-scorer of all time in international cricket. 

The second on the list for most centuries in Test cricket features former South Africa cricketer Jacques Kallis. The former all-rounder hit 45 hundreds in his Test career. Between 1995 and 2013, Kallis aggregated 13289 runs in 166 Tests at an average of 55.37.

Former Australia cricket team captain Ricky Ponting is third on the list for most centuries in Test cricket. Ponting smashed 21 tons in the longest format. Having batted mostly at number three, the right-handed batter accumulated 13378 runs in 168 Tests at an average of 51.85. 

Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara and India’s Rahul Dravid complete the top five list for most centuries in Test cricket. The ex-Sri Lanka skipper registered 38 Test tons while Dravid hit 36 hundreds in his Test career.

While Sangakkara amassed 12400 runs in 134 Test matches at an average of 57.40, Dravid ended his Test career with 13288 runs in 164 games at an average of 52.31.

Steve Smith and Virat Kohli have scored the most centuries in Test cricket among active cricketers, smashing 27 hundreds each.

He ended the tournament with 303 runs in eight matches at an average of 60.60. The Indian captain’s epic catch to dismiss the dangerous Vivian Richards in the final is considered as one of the turning points of the match.

The original Little Master opened the innings for India during the 1983 World Cup. He had a disappointing tournament with the bat, scoring just 59 runs in six innings at an average of 9.83.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth was the opening partner of Sunil Gavaskar at the 1983 World Cup. He scored 38 runs off 57 balls to guide India to a match-winning score of 183 in the final. Srikkanth ended the tournament with 156 runs in eight matches at an average of 19.50.

Mohinder Amarnath

Mohinder Amarnath was one of India's most outstanding players at the 1983 World Cup. The India vice-captain scored 237 runs and picked eight wickets in as many matches. For his 26 runs and three wickets in the World Cup final, he was named the player of the match.

Yashpal Sharma

Yashpal Sharma played a stellar role with the bat, amassing 240 runs in eight matches at an average of 34.28. Not only did he deliver some crucial knocks, but his running between the wickets impressed everyone as well.

Sandeep Patil

Sandeep Patil was one of India's top batters in the 1983 World Cup. Patil, who batted in the middle order, scored 216 runs in eight matches at an average of 30.85. In addition, he recorded two fifties and contributed some superb bowling performances as well.

Kirti Azad

The Bihar-born cricketer played three matches during the 1983 World Cup, contributing 15 runs and one wicket.

Roger Binny

Roger Binny had the most wickets for India during the 1983 World Cup. Binny claimed 18 wickets in eight matches with the best bowling figures of 4/29. With the bat, Binny scored 73 runs at the bottom of the order.

Madan Lal

Madan Lal was impressive with both bat and ball in the 1983 World Cup. In addition to picking up 17 wickets, he scored 102 runs in eight matches. He was instrumental in helping India win their first World Cup.

Syed Kirmani

In the 1983 World Cup, Syed Kirmani was the wicketkeeper of the Indian cricket team. The catch of Faoud Bacchus in the final against West Indies earned him the best wicket-keeper award.

Balwinder Sandhu

Balwinder Sandhu starred in the 1983 World Cup-winning squad as one of its heroes. With eight wickets in as many games, Sandhu also contributed valuable runs as a tailender. The dismissal of West Indies batter Gordon Greenidge in the World Cup final is still one of his most memorable performances.

Sunil Valson

Sunil Valson was the 12th man in the 1983 World Cup squad. The pacer didn't have the opportunity to play in even one game during the tournament.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar and ex-England skipper Nasser Hussain were involved in a heated exchange before the start of the third England-India Test at Headingley in Leeds on Wednesday.

Gavaskar was offended by comments made by Hussain in his recent article for the publication Daily Mail where he wrote that the current Virat Kohli-led Indian cricket team will not be bullied like the previous Indian generations. 

“Virat Kohli is the right man at the right time to lead this formidable India side. His players, in particular the bowlers, want an aggressive captain. They want Kohli stirring things up, as he did so effectively in that brilliant second Test at Lord’s�?This India are not a side who will be bullied, as perhaps previous generations have been,�?Nasser Hussain wrote in his column.

Gavaskar took exception to Hussain’s assessment of Indian teams from the past and asked the former English skipper to explain what he meant by bullying.

“You said this India will not be bullied as perhaps the previous generations would be. (I) Belonging to previous generation, could you perhaps enlighten which generation? And what is the exact meaning of bully?�?Gavaskar asked Hussain during the pre-match show on air.

The Madras-born British cricket commentator then insisted that what he meant was similar to what Gavaskar assumed in the first place.

“I just think, the Indian side under the aggression of the past, would have said ‘no no no�? But what Kohli has done is to make them go doubly hard. I saw a little bit of that in Sourav Ganguly’s side and he started that, Virat is continuing with it. Even when Virat was not there, Ajinkya really went hard at the Australians. I just don’t think you want to wake this Indian side up,�?Hussain said.

 

However, the 72-year-old Indian batting great proceeded to slam Hussain and pointed at the past records of Indian teams during the 70s and 80s.

“But when you say previous generations were bullied, I don't think so. I'd be very upset if my generation was being talked about as being bullied. If you have a look at the record, in 1971 we won, that was my first tour in England. (In) 1974, we had internal problems so we lost 3-0. (In) 1979, we lost 1-0, it could have been 1-1 if we chased down 438 at the Oval (match ended with India stranded at 429 for 8).

"(In) 1982, we again lost 1-0. In 1986 we won 2-0, we could have won it 3-0. So, I don't think my generation we were bullied. I don’t think aggression means you have always got to be at the face of the opposition. You can show passion, you can show your commitment towards your team without yelling after each fall of wicket,�?Gavaskar said.

Hussain though remained adamant and stuck to his guns, saying that he likes the way Virat Kohli leads India.

“I for one, quite like the way Kohli leads this side. That’s what I wanted to say. That team talk in which he said ‘let’s unleash fire on this English side�?and you could see the fire that they unleashed,�?Hussain said.

Gavaskar agreed with Hussain’s take on Kohli’s India team and said, “There is no argument in that. The question is saying that the previous generations were bullied. I don’t think this is right.”�?/span>

Meanwhile, India were bundled out for 78 on the first day of the third Test at Headingley in Leeds. England pacers James Anderson and Craig Overton were the pick of the bowlers as they took three wickets each. Rohit Sharma was the top-scorer for India after making 19.
