Leeds United pulled off a dramatic 3-1 win over Sheffield United, extending their lead at the top of the Championship by five points. It was their second comeback in a row after beating Sunderland last week.

Sheffield United took the lead when Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier made a mistake. He tried to save a header from Callum O'Hare, but the ball hit the bar. Tyrese Campbell’s rebound hit the post and bounced off Meslier into the net, giving the home team the lead.

Leeds found their rhythm in the second half. Junior Firpo equalised with a powerful header from Dan James' cross. With the game nearing a draw, Ao Tanaka scored a header off a corner in the 89th minute to give Leeds the lead. Moments later, Joel Piroe sealed the win with a brilliant strike from 20 yards, making it 3-1.

With this win, Leeds have not lost in their last 16 matches. They are seven points ahead of third-place Burnley. Sheffield United, who had won four games in a row before this, stayed in second place, with two points between them and Burnley.

Leeds shows resilience after a rough start

The game didn’t start well for Leeds. Meslier struggled early on, almost scoring an own goal from a corner. Then, he misjudged a long throw-in that caused more trouble. Despite making a big save on O'Hare’s header, Meslier’s luck ran out. He couldn’t stop Campbell’s header from hitting the post, and the ball bounced off him into his net.

In the last part of the first half, Leeds had a few chances but couldn’t score. They were much better in the second half. Firpo’s header brought the game level. Meslier also made big saves to stop Sheffield United from getting another goal.

In the final minutes, Tanaka scored with a header from a corner, and then Piroe added a long shot that sealed the victory. Leeds showed great spirit, proving why they’re at the top of the table.

Sheffield United left disappointed

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder gave credit to Leeds for their strong performance. He said his team played well at the start but lost control late. He was upset about giving up two goals in the last minutes, mostly from set-pieces.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke was proud of his team’s fight after a tough start. He said they found extra energy in the second half and deserved the win. Farke stressed that each win brings them closer to their goal of staying on top.

Next games for both teams

Leeds will now face West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, hoping to keep their strong form. Sheffield United will look to bounce back against Queens Park Rangers on the same day.

The FA Cup 2022-23 semi-finals are slated to take place this weekend with Manchester City taking on Sheffield United and Manchester United facing Brighton & Hove Albion.

Manchester City will square off against Sheffield United on Saturday, while Manchester United take on Brighton on Sunday.

The Citizens will head into their semi-final clash against Sheffield as firm favourites. Unbeaten in their last 15 games, City is in scintillating form and will be brimming with confidence having beaten Bayern Munich 4-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals.

On course for a historic treble, City will be eager to get the better of Sheffield and secure a final spot in their bid to win the FA Cup, Premier League, and UEFA Champions League.

Sheffield United, on the other hand, is also in a rich vein of form and is currently second in the Championship table, putting them on course for automatic promotion to the Premier League next season.

They’ve won six of their last seven matches and will be hoping to pull off a huge upset against a formidable City side.

Meanwhile, Manchester United will be hoping to bounce back from their UEFA Europa League exit in midweek by overcoming a high-flying Brighton side who will fancy their chances of knocking out the Red Devils.

Currently seventh in the Premier League and chasing a spot in European football next season, Brighton is one of the in-form teams in world football at the moment and have played some breathtaking football this season.

While it may seem like the Red Devils are favourites to win this tie on paper, the Seagulls will know that they are very capable of knocking out the English heavyweights of the FA Cup, which would mean that United would be knocked out of two Cup competitions in four days.

Needless to say, Manchester United won’t want that to happen. The Red Devils have already lost to Brighton once this season and will be desperate to beat the Seagulls in their bid to reach the final.

With both first-choice center-backs now injured for United, they will have to rely on Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof to keep things tight at the back, while the return of Marcus Rashford from injury is likely to come as a welcome boost for them in the attack.

Both the semi-finals will take place at England’s iconic Wembley Stadium as we prepare to know the finalists of this season’s FA Cup.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City may have taken an unassailable lead in the Premier League, but the season is far from over with both the UEFA Champions League as well as the Europa League slots yet to be finalized.

The likes of Fulham and Wolves have already inaugurated the matchweek 31, with winger Adama Traore slotting in a 92nd-minute winner for the latter. Up next is Manchester City’s home game against Leeds United followed by Liverpool hosting Aston Villa, Chelsea making a trip to Crystal Palace before the headline fixture takes place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium where the home team squares off against Manchester United.

That said, let’s dive into the statistics to see what the matchweek 31 of the English Premier League has to offer.

Manchester City vs Leeds United

Manchester City’s last meeting with Leeds United may have ended in a 1-1 draw, but a lot has changed since. Between late December (2020) and early March, Guardiola’s men have won 21 games on the trot in all competitions and that duly affirmed their place at the top of the table.

4 Wins 6
5 Draws 5

Leeds United’s rich history puts them in the favour as far as their head-to-head record against the Cityzens is concerned. The teams have played a total of 15 games in the competition, with Leeds winning six and City winning four. The current form, however, is what matters and City have the momentum on their side, winning four of their last five league games.

Meanwhile, Leeds?poor track record in defence this season is a further indication of why City are the firm favourites. Marcelo Bielsa?/strong>s men have conceded a whopping 48 goals this season, with 35 of them conceded away from home. City, on the other hand, have been a scoring machine, notching 66 goals in 31 games, which translates to more than two goals per game.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa

A sense of retribution will be on the cards when Liverpool host Aston Villa at Anfield on April 10. The Reds?last meeting against the Villans was a historic affair, with the latter putting past seven goals in a 7-2 victory at the Villa Park in October 2020. Be that as it may, Liverpool enter the round as favourites considering their superior form compared to Villa.

0 Wins 2
5 Losses 1

Liverpool’s home record this season has been underwhelming at its very best, losing all of their last five home games. However, they have indeed won 28 of their 51 meetings with Aston Villa. The Reds tend to concede goals early in the game and that sure remains a worry for Jurgen Klopp. The positive, however, for them is Villa’s current form which has seen them win just one of their last five games in the Premier League. In these five games, the Villans have scored just two goals.

Crystal Palace vs Chelsea

Chelsea have always dominated their London rivals Crystal Palace in the Premier League, with their last defeat against the Eagles coming back in 2017. Since then, the Blues have won six games on the trot, scoring two or more goals in five of those outings.

As one can expect, Chelsea vs Crystal Palace head-to-head record is outrightly dominated by the former, who have won 17 of the 23 meetings between the two teams. Chelsea tend to score more goals in the second half and one can expect them to do the same on Saturday. Even in their last meeting, which ended in a 4-0 win for Chelsea, all of their goals came in the second half itself.

Crystal Palace vs Chelsea current form

3 Draws 2

Chelsea have kept 10 clean sheets against Crystal Palace in the Premier League, and despite missing Thiago Silva due to suspension, one can put their money on another clean sheet for the Blues considering the fact that Palace have scored a mere three goals in their last five league games this season.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

Like Liverpool, Manchester United too have a point to prove against a struggling Tottenham Hotspur team which humiliated the Red Devils the last time these two teams met. United’s last league fixture against Tottenham ended in a 6-1 win for the latter at Old Trafford.

Manchester United endured mixed results against Tottenham of late, winning two and losing two of their last five meetings. During the course though, United have shown a sheer lack of goal scoring prowess while Tottenham have been completely contrary. In these last five games, Tottenham have scored 11 while United scored a mere four.

But what makes United favourites here is their away record in the Premier League. Not only have they been unbeaten for long in the league, but they have also always managed to salvage points more often than not.

Sheffield United vs Arsenal

A struggling Sheffield United team has been a lost cause this season, but they have indeed managed to surprise once in a blue. Now, their head-to-head record against Arsenal sure goes to the Gunners?way, but the fact remains that Mikel Arteta’s men are coming at the back of just two wins from their last five league games. Sheffield, on the other hand, only have a solitary win to show for during the course.

The Gunners undoubtedly remain the outright favourites considering the fact that Sheffield have conceded the third most number of goals (52) this season while scoring a mere 17 goals in 30 games.

The consequences of the global pandemic had little to no effect on the Premier League club’s spending ahead of the 2020-21 season. While Chelsea ended up splashing over £200m on new signings, the likes of Manchester City and Leeds United weren’t behind.

However, money never guarantees success and these spendings have also had mixed results so far. While there have been players like Tomas Soucek, Ollie Watkins and James Rodriguez, who have impressed one and all, there have been others who have failed to live up the hype.

Today, we take a look at five such players who have struggled to live up to the expectations.

Willian - Arsenal

Willian arrived at Arsenal amidst much fan-fare and the Brazilian put on a man-of-the-match performance on his PL debut for the Gunners as well, assisting two goals in a 3-0 win over Fulham. However, that has been his only notable contribution in an Arsenal shirt till date. Since then, he has only provided a solitary assist and has failed to score a single goal across four different competitions. What’s more worrisome is the fact that his conversion rate has deteriorated considerably as he averages1.3 shots per 90 minutes. Note that this is the same player who bagged 11 goals last season with Chelsea.

Kai Havertz - Chelsea

Kai Havertz became the most expensive player of the 2020 summer transfer window when Chelsea decided to pay £71million to Bayer Leverkusen for the 21-year-old. Coming at the back of a fantastic season in Bundesliga, where he had scored 18 goals and nine assists, fans and experts had expected a commanding display from the German but the youngster has not only failed to justify his price tag, but his ineffective displays have drawn extreme criticism as well. So far, the 21-year-old has scored four goals across four competitions and has provided as many assists.

Donny van de Beek - Manchester United

The signing of Donny van de Beek from Ajax was a smooth transition, to say the least, but many supporters and even the former players questioned why he was signed by Manchester United in the first place. Fast forward to the date and the 23-year-old still remains a deviant figure at the club. Regardless of the talent he brings, the title of being one of the worst transfers comes on the back of an extreme muddle as no one is still aware of his best position. Manager Ole Gunnar-Solksjaer has answered the questions regarding his absence in sheer professionalism, but the fact remains that he has started just two league games this season

Timo Werner - Chelsea

"At the beginning, I had this self-image that I can go on doing my thing here, but in the last few months, I have been brought down to earth. It's the way in England that you never have a quiet game,?striker Timo Werner recently made an honest admission about his time in the Premier League.

The German international, who bagged 34 goals and 13 assists for RB Leipzig last season, has been relatively quiet in the Premier League this term. Joining the Blues for £47.5 million, the 24-year-old fell short of expectations and has failed to adapt to the rugged style of the league, meaning that he has been limited to just five goals in the league; a far cry from the standard he showcased last season. Now, there are several reasons as to why Werner has been failing to find the goal, with one being Frank Lampard’s use of the striker. During the tenure of the former manager, Werner was used in four different positions and that pretty much explains why he is struggling with consistency.

Rhian Brewster - Sheffield United

Splashing a club-record £23.5 million for a player who was yet to make a single Premier League appearance was always going to be a gamble, and that hasn’t really paid off well for Sheffield United this season. The signing of Rhian Brewster from Liverpool received rave reviews considering the fact that he had scored 11 goals in 22 games during his brief loan spell at Swansea City in the 2019-20 Championship season. That £23.5 million, however, has given Sheffield United 734 league minutes, zero goals and as many assists. The 20-year-old has made 18 Premier League appearances so far and averages a mere 0.7 shots per game; certainly not a figure that he wants to be associated with.

Premier League football returns after an intense round of FA Cup fixtures, with Newcastle United and Leeds United opening the matchweek 20 of the competition. While both the Manchester clubs have rather easy fixtures, the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal face an uphill battle against in-form opponent.

So, as the race for the Premier League title heats up, we take a look at some key statistics that might help you ace the upcoming gameweek.

Southampton vs Arsenal

Arsenal's fortune in the Premier League has seen a surge since their 2-1 defeat to Everton month, as they have gone on a five-game unbeaten run, winning four and drawing one. Arsenal and Southampton have already met twice this season and the Gunners are yet to get the better of Saints. Their first league meeting this season ended in a 1-1 draw and the two then met in an FA Cup tie where an own goal from Gabriel Magalhaes was enough for Saints to run away with a victory.

Southampton vs Arsenal head-to-head

43 Matches 43
7 Wins 23
13 Draws 13

Southampton vs Arsenal head-to-head record in the Premier League outrightly favours the latter, who have won 23 of the 43 meetings between each other. The Saints have found victory on just seven occasions.

Arsenal have been utterly dominant in their last five Premier League games. They have, in fact, scored 11 goals in their last five outings, while keeping four clean sheets. The Saint, on their part, have scored a solitary goal in their last five games, but have managed three clean sheets. Despite their recent struggle though, there are high chances of Southampton opening the scoring as nine of their 14 goals at home have come in the first 45 minutes. What further aids the Saints is the fact that Arsenal have conceded seven of their eight away goals in the opening period.

Chelsea vs Wolves

Chelsea taking on Wolves always promises goals, as the teams have produced 17 goals in their last five meetings. The two teams are evenly poised during the period as both have registered two victories while the remaining game ended in a draw. As far as their head-to-head count goes, Chelsea hold the edge with nine wins in 13 Premier League meetings, while Wolves have won three.

Chelsea vs Wolves goal-scoring comparison
Teams First Half Second Half Total
Chelsea (Home) 7 12 19
Wolves (Away) 7 2 9

Both teams have encountered a tough tenure recently, but Chelsea have, at least, registered a victory in their last five games. Wolves are without a win in their last six league games. Their last league win, in fact, came on December 15 against Chelsea. The Blues have scored a whopping 19 goals at home this season and 12 of them have come in the second period, meaning that one can rightly punt on them scoring at least once in the final 45 minutes. As far as Wolves are concerned, 10 of the 16 goals that they have conceded away from home have come in the second half.

Manchester United vs Sheffield United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United haven't lost a Premier League game since November 2020, and their unbeaten form is expected to continue when they take on Chris Wilder's Sheffield United on Wednesday (Thursday, 1:45 per IST). The two sides played out an absolute scorcher of a game last time out, with Manchester United running out 3-2 victorious away from home.

Sheffield United have won just one of their nine Premier League meetings against Manchester United and have lost seven. In those nine games, Manchester United have scored 22 goals while Sheffield have bagged nine. All of their Premier League meetings have seen at least one goal per game.

Manchester United vs Sheffield United goal-scoring pattern
Teams 0-15 16-30 31-35 46-60 61-75 76-90
Manchester United (Home) 3 1 2 1 3 2
Sheffield United (Away) 2 0 0 0 1 1

While United have won four of their last five Premier League meetings this season, the Blades are coming on the back of four defeats and just one victory. Judging by the current form, Manchester United are highly likely to open the scoring and are tipped to bag a goal in the second period as well. As far as Sheffield are concerned, numbers say that they can bag a goal inside in the opening 15 minutes.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool

Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp cross paths once again as Tottenham host champions Liverpool on Thursday (Friday, 1:30 per IST). The Reds are on a seven-game unbeaten run against Tottenham in all competitions, with their last defeat against the Lilly Whites coming in October 2017. During this period, Liverpool have scored at least two goals on six occasions. Even their head-to-head count is pretty one-sided as well, with Liverpool winning 28 of their 57 Premier League meetings against Tottenham while losing.

Tottenham vs Liverpool goal-scoring comparison
Teams First Half Second Half Total
Tottenham (Home) 11 3 14
Liverpool (Away) 6 10 16

The current form, however, favours the home team as they are coming on the back of two victories in their last five games. The Reds, on their part, have lost two and drawn three. Klopp's men have scored more away goals (16) than Tottenham have at home (14), and a whopping 10 of them have come in the second period. As far as Tottenham are concerned, they have scored 11 goals in first-half, making it an even contest.

Mesut Ozil's eventual departure to Fenerbahce has obviously been the biggest story of the ongoing transfer market, but there are two more weeks left in the winter transfer window. With more than 10 days still to go, there's plenty of room for the deals to happen. Today, we bring you three transfer stories that have been catching the limelight of late.

Arsenal considering move for Manor Solomon

Now that Mesut Ozil is no longer an Arsenal player, reports have emerged that the Gunners are considering a move for Shakhtar Donetsk winger Manor Solomon. As per Football London, Israeli 'super agent' Pini Zahavi is already in talks with Arsenal technical director Edu after offering the young winger to the team's former head of football Raul Sanllehi in May 2020. Sanllehi's eventual departure left the deal in tantrums, but a long connection between Zahavi and Edu might see Arsenal moving for Solomon.

Note that Zahavi does not represent Solomon and the former will rather be acting as an intermediary. There are claims that the deal may broker in January itself, but the player will join his new team during the summer transfer window to be a part of Arsenal's pre-season campaign.

Sheffield United want Jesse Lingard

Jesse Lingard's future at Manchester United continues to be the talk of the town. After the rumours with a potential move to the Ligue 1 side Nice settled down, reports have it that Chris Wilder's Sheffield United are trying to acquire the attacking midfielder in the ongoing January transfer window. As per the Sheffield Star, Wilder is keen on improving his team's fortune and has identified Lingard as one of the two players that he wants to bring in on loan. Lingard has strongly been linked with a move away from Old Trafford but it is said that he is reluctant on joining a side that is fighting relegation.

Sheffield, currently, sit at the bottom of the Premier League table having won just one of their 19 league games so far. Yet the advisors have told Lingard that signing for Wilder won't affect his chances of sealing a high profiles move in the summer.

No contact for Declan Rice

West Ham United manager David Moyes has confirmed that neither Chelsea nor Manchester United have contacted the Hammers asking for the availability of their star midfielder Declan Rice. Though sources have reported that Ole Gunnar-Solskjaer's team has joined the Blues in the race to acquire the in-demand midfielder, Moyes has said that none of the teams have made an actual move yet.

"We've had no contact from either of those clubs regarding Declan and we wouldn't want any anyway," Moyes told Amazon Prime.

"He's doing great for us, he's a big leader now, he's taken a lot of the weight off Mark Noble. He's turning out to be a really good player but also a really good boy and good around the club."

Rice has started all of West Ham's 18 league games this season but a move away is highly touted, if not in the ongoing window then definitely during the summer. It has been quoted that West Ham will demand as much as £70million for their midfielder.

In a crunch semifinal between two powerhouses, the game was precariously was balanced at 1-0.

The next goal was likely going to tilt the tie in the scorer’s favour and hence, both teams came out of the break aiming to keep their backdoor shut.

But early into the second half, some loose play in the final third gave the team in blue an opportunity to score and despite a tame shot from the local academy graduate, the ball found its way into the back of the net owing to a disappointing effort from the Spanish goalkeeper.

That error cost them the tie and was just another one in a long list of lapses in the previous 18 months from a player that had carried the club on his back for years.

That game we are talking about is the 2014-15 Champions League semifinal second leg between Real Madrid and Juventus, which marked the last time that club legend Iker Casillas played for the Los Blancos in the UEFA Champions League.

And much like that game and his error on Alvaro Morata’s shot sealed San Iker’s fate, the FA Cup semifinal on Sunday between Chelsea and Manchester United, where a similar story unfolded, could mark the end of David de Gea’s tenure as United’s #1 in goal.

Dean Henderson is the future

Away from the commotion at Old Trafford, United loanee Dean Henderson, who has been plying his trade with Sheffield United for two seasons, is having another tremendous season for the team from South Yorkshire.

The 23-year-old has kept 13 clean sheets, two fewer than league-leader Nick Pope and one more than de Gea. A magnificent shot-stopper, commanding in the air and good with the ball at his feet, Henderson is being sought by clubs in England and abroad, with London giants Chelsea keen to have the English goalkeeper on their books.

United though, have been insistent that Henderson is not for sale. Speaking about the keeper and his future, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was quoted as saying, "Dean's done really well for them and Sheffield United has been really good for him. He'll come back one day and he'll have a good career at Man United.?/span>

The loanee himself is keen on making his mark at his boyhood club but is open to leaving the club if the opportunity doesn’t present itself. “I think it’s clear for everyone to know, I want to play for Manchester United and England. Maybe I’ll get the opportunity (to play for Man United), maybe I won’t, then I’ll have to look down a different avenue.?/span>

Given Henderson’s incredible rise and upside, it’s impossible to see Manchester United parting ways with the Englishman. At just 23, the keeper has a full season’s experience under his belt in the Premier League and has shown that he is up to the task at that level.

With a slew of suitors and his own desire to play for the club, it would have been incredibly difficult for United to accommodate the keeper into the first XI, but the decision has been made slightly easier by David de Gea’s erratic performance over the past 18 months.

David declining

David de Gea has been United’s best player since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

The Spaniard making jaw-dropping saves was a weekly sight for close to three years and was usually the difference between winning and losing for United.

However, since the start of last season, the Spaniard has seemingly lost his edge. He leads the Premier League in errors leading to goals with seven over the past 24 months and his error against Chelsea on Sunday further illustrates that de Gea, like Casillas in 2015, is on the decline.

With United finally finding some coherence in their outfield personnel, the last thing the club would want is an issue in the goalkeeping department.

Every goalkeeper is bound to an error once in a while, however, de Gea has been erratic for close to two years and no longer exhumes the same confidence he once did.

Manager Ole Gunnar Soslkjaer recently called him ‘the best goalkeeper in the world? and while that was true not too long ago, the Spaniard can no longer lay a claim to that throne and may in fact not even be the best goalkeeper currently employed by Manchester United.

The club have a decision on their hands and right now, it seems clear. Henderson is six years younger than de Gea, better at commanding the box and while he has an error or so in him, he’s yet to commit a slew of those like the Spaniard.

Manchester United will forever be grateful for his incredible service, but as of today, it seems David de Gea is close to the end of his tenure as United’s #1 between the goalposts.

As the Premier League enters the final week of the season, there is still plenty to play for at both ends of the table.

With two games remaining for all the clubs preparing to settle the campaign's remaining issues, we take as a closer look at the race to qualify for the Champions League and Europa League, as well as the fight to avoid relegation:

Top four fight

Chelsea and Leicester City are in possession of the coveted top four berths alongside champions Liverpool and Manchester City, who are guaranteed to finish second.

But both side's grip on those spots in next season's Champions League could easily be broken by in-form Manchester United in a nerve-jangling finale.

Third-placed Chelsea are one point ahead of both Leicester and United, who sit fifth and are behind the Foxes on goal difference.

On Sunday, Leicester face a tricky trip to Tottenham, while on Wednesday United host West Ham and Chelsea travel to Liverpool.

After those games, the top four may have been shaken up significantly before the final round of matches on July 26.

Chelsea need four points from their last two games to guarantee qualification and play Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge on the last day.

Leicester and United meet in a decisive showdown at the King Power Stadium, which means if either of those teams win those last two games they are guaranteed to return to Europe's elite club competition.

United are the form team after winning five of their seven league games since the restart, while Chelsea and Leicester have both shown recent signs of vulnerability.

Europa League race

The teams who finish fifth and sixth will qualify for next season's Europa League, unless either of the sides in those positions win the Champions League or the Europa League -- United and Wolves are contenders in the latter competition -- when they restart next month.

Winning those tournaments is rewarded with Champions League qualification.

If the FA Cup winners finish in the top six, then seventh place in the Premier League would qualify for the Europa League.

Sixth-placed Wolves will qualify for the Europa League if they win their final two games against Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

Tottenham, one point behind Wolves, will be guaranteed to hold onto seventh place at least if they win their final two games against Leicester and Palace.

Sheffield United, who face Everton and Southampton, are one point behind Tottenham in eighth and need Jose Mourinho's men or Wolves to slip up.

Relegation fears

Norwich are already relegated, leaving two places to be filled by unwilling teams over the next week.

West Ham and Brighton are effectively safe after moving six points clear of the relegation zone, leaving Watford, Bournemouth and Aston Villa scrapping for survival.

Third-from-bottom Bournemouth are three points behind Watford and can move level on points if they beat Southampton at Dean Court on Sunday, with a three-goal margin of victory enough to take them above the Hornets on goal difference.

Watford take on Manchester City at Vicarage Road on Tuesday and shortly afterwards Villa host Arsenal.

If Watford beat City or take a point, then Bournemouth or Villa would be relegated if they fail to match the Hornets' result.

On the last day, Villa head to West Ham, Bournemouth are at Everton and Watford travel to Arsenal.

After going six games without a win after the coronavirus hiatus, Villa have given themselves hope with four points from their last two matches, although conceding a late equaliser at Everton on Thursday was a major blow.

Bournemouth's win against Leicester on July 12 was their first in 10 games, but a defeat at City kept them in the mire.

Watford had won their previous games before a 3-1 loss at West Ham on Friday dented their survival bid.

Another exciting week of the Premier League unfolded as a 3-0 win for Sheffield United over Chelsea at home gave Manchester United a perfect opportunity to get into the top three, should they beat a free-flowing Southampton on Monday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are just two points away from Chelsea and a point adrift of fourth-placed Leicester City, who suffered a humiliating 4-1 loss to Bournemouth on Sunday. Meanwhile, Wolves bounced back to winning ways on the weekend, with a 3-0 drubbing of Everton still keeping them in the contention.

So as the 36th gameweek approaches, here are two games that need your special attention.

Arsenal vs Liverpool

Since being crowned the new champions of England, Liverpool have somehow lost their touch, to say the least. In their last five outings, they have not only lost once but have also seen their perfect home run getting a hit by Burnley.

Regardless of that though, their form against Arsenal, whom they face at the Emirates on Wednesday (Thursday, 00:45 IST) is expected to bring them all three points. The Reds, in their last five appearances against Gunners, have scored three or more on four occasions. Klopp’s men have, in fact, have scored 16 goals in their last five outings against Arsenal.

The champions are duly tipped to score the opener as they have done it in four of the last five games against their Wednesday opponents.

Watch out for:

Mohamed Salah: Liverpool’s Egyptian king Mohamed Salah has scored three and provided as many assists in his last five Premier League games. It was, in fact, Salah who scored a brace when Liverpool played Arsenal earlier in the season, recording a 3-1 win.

The Gunners, as it stands, remain his favourite prey, having scored five in five against Arsenal in the league. With Roberto Firmino, who carries a similar record as Salah against Mikel Arteta’s side, struggling to find the net of late, the Egyptian remains a perfect and the safest bet.

Leicester City vs Sheffield United

Brendan Rodgers?Leicester City have been utterly inconsistent since the Premier League resumed. The Foxes have registered a solitary victory in their last five outings, and thus, a visit of Sheffield United at King Power Stadium on July 16 remains a definite worry.

Rodgers?men have struggled to keep a clean sheet since the restart and have conceded first in three of their last six appearances (against Chelsea, Everton and Arsenal). Sheffield, on the other hand, also lost their touch in June, but victories over Tottenham, Wolves and Chelsea are expected to give them an upper hand. They have, in fact, scored eight goals in their last four league outings, averaging two per game.

Watch out for:

Oliver McBurnie: Sheffield striker Oliver McBurnie is in devastating form of late. He may have scored just two goals since the restart, but his involvement, especially against Chelsea and Tottenham, where his side scored three apiece, is worth keeping an eye on. An absolute poacher, the 24-year-old is tipped to wreak havoc when he squares off against the likes of Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans. Not to forget the fact that he was on the scoresheet when these sides crossed swords earlier in the season.

The race for the top spots in the Premier League stands to heat up after Manchester City’s appeal to overturn their Champions League exclusion was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). With the former champions having all but sealed second place in the Premier League table, this news comes as a bane for many of the other Premier League teams currently fighting for a place in the coveted Champions League next season.

With the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham all but out of the rat race, the fight for the third and fourth spot, which might guarantee the Champions League football next season has just heated up. On that note, we look at the other clubs in contention for Champions League football.

Chelsea

Remaining fixtures: Home to Norwich City and Wolves, Away at Liverpool

Frank Lampard took over from Maurizio Sarri and has ably led his side this season. The former Blues and England legend has overseen a complete overhaul of the team, with the old guns Pedro and Willian set to depart at the end of the season.

Buoyed by the arrival of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech next season, Lampard will hope to lead his side into the Champions League in his first year at the club as manager. Having won the trophy with Chelsea, Lampard has shown that he is a capable manager, with important wins through the season.

Their battle with Leicester City is a topsy-turvy affair, with Chelsea having narrowly won four of six matches since the restart. With tough fixtures against Wolves and Liverpool coming up and currently just one point above Leicester, the battle for third place might go down to the wire.

Leicester City

Remaining fixtures: Home to Sheffield United and Manchester United, Away at Tottenham

Under Brendan Rodgers, Leicester City look like an indomitable force. The Foxes have been in great form this season, with frontman Jamie Vardy having scored 22 goals to lead the goal-scoring charts this season. However, their attack is not the only reason for their great form.

Leicester City can owe their high-class performances to a certain level of consistency. They have a strong defensive unit, which looked unbeatable prior to the lockdown. However, since the beginning of Project Restart, the club has faltered a bit with only one win in six games and finds itself in a spot where it is competing with Chelsea for the third spot.

Their last three fixtures will be a test of their resilience as a Champions League club and they will deservedly qualify for the highest European competition if they perform well against these sides, especially with the looming threat of Chelsea staring at them.

Manchester United

Remaining fixtures: Home to Southampton and West Ham, Away at Crystal Palace and Leicester City

Currently fifth in the Premier League table, Manchester United have been among the best sides in the Premier League since the restart of the division. The combination play of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes has been excellent, while the onus of their upsurge lies on the attackers.

Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood have established themselves as the dynamic trio for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United. They are yet to lose since Project Restart and have scored 15 goals in these five matches. Anthony Martial became the first player after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson to score a hat-trick, while Mason Greenwood has also seemingly come of age after scoring a brace against both Brighton and Bournemouth, taking his tally for the season to nine.

United will need their defence at their best in order to try and get the better of both Chelsea and Leicester, with their game against the latter proving crucial to the final standings.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Remaining fixtures: Home to Crystal Palace, Away at Burnley and Chelsea

Wolves have been one of the biggest surprise packages of the Premier League this season, and sit comfortably at sixth, with another Europa League spot almost guaranteed. They are another team to have experienced a mixed restart with four narrow wins.

With a gap of three points between Wolves and United, Nuno Espirito Santo will be looking for inspiration from his forward line, who have looked less threatening since the restart. They are 15 goals behind United on goal difference and will look to buck up in their next three fixtures.

Although Wolves have been a shadow of themselves in an attacking aspect since the restart, they have kept five clean sheets, conceding just two goals during their home fixture against Arsenal. With the only tough fixture in their list being against Chelsea, expect the Wolves to put up a strong fight for Champions League football. If not, the club will definitely be proud of their season, even if it means another year of Europa.

Sheffield United

Remaining fixtures: Home to Everton, Away at Leicester City and Southampton

Sheffield United have been one of the biggest revelations this season, having been promoted to Premier League and keeping in mind that they were languishing in the third tier during the 2016-17 season. Chris Wilder’s side has shown that a Premier League club can be successful without many big names.

With three matches left for the season, Sheffield United currently find themselves in seventh, five points behind fourth-placed Leicester City. The Blades will need to be at their firing best against their next three opponents and the club will be buoyed by their 3-0 win over Chelsea.

Overall, the task of overhauling the deficit of almost three points, with both Wolves and Manchester United in the mix, seems daunting to Wilder’s team. However, fans of Sheffield will be very happy with their club’s season and will make do with European football in the league, which will be an achievement unto itself. However, the threat of Tottenham and Arsenal underneath them will hang on their head as they approach the tough task at hand.
