Despite the upcoming Lanka Premier League 2025, Sri Lanka Cricket pushed through their decision to terminate the contracts of Jaffna Kings and Colombo Strikers due to ‘failure to fulfil their contractual obligations.’�?/p>

The board released a statement saying, ‘Sri Lanka Cricket and the IPG Group (the LPL's organising partners) remain committed to upholding the integrity, standards, and success of the Lanka Premier League.�?Despite hinting at a major violation committed by the two teams, the board remained silent and hasn’t released additional details yet.

Now that the remaining two original owners are out, all five pioneers are removed from the Lanka Premier League. With these two exits, the LPL has no franchise owners with a history beyond 2024.

What is the Lanka Premier League?

The LPL is a T20 format cricket league that was established in 2020. The first five original owners were the Colombo Kings, Dambulla Vikings, Galle Gladiators, Kandy Tuskers, and the Jaffna Stallions. All teams represent the major provinces in Sri Lanka.

The ownership of the teams changed, and their names did as well. All five teams changed names and ownership in 2021, but the only team that managed to span four years is the Jaffna Kings (previously Jaffna Stallions).

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023 started on July 30 and will run till August 20 in Sri Lanka.

Featuring five teams, a total of 24 T20 matches will be played over three weeks in the fourth edition of the Lanka Premier League.

Some of the world's leading T20 bowlers including the likes of Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Shakib Al Hasan and Naseem Shah are featuring in the ongoing edition of LPL.

Meanwhile, talented left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage was the first bowler to register a four-wicket haul in LPL 2023. Playing for three-time winners and defending champions Jaffna Kings, Wellalage recorded figures of 4-0-10-4 against Galle Titans to help his side secure a comprehensive eight-wicket win at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

T20 World Cup winner Carlos Brathwaite finished with the most wickets in the Lanka Premier League last season. Representing Kandy Falcons, the West Indies all-rounder picked up 18 wickets in eight matches at an average of 9.88 and an economy of 6.84. Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Thushara was second on the list with 14 wickets in nine matches last year.

Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga was the leading wicket-taker in the inaugural Lanka Premier League in 2020. The aggressive leg-spinner scalped 17 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 11.29 and an impressive economy of 5.18.

Former England all-rounder Samit Patel and Sri Lanka’s rising off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana finished with the most wickets in the second edition of LPL. Both Patel and Theekshana bagged 16 wickets in 10 matches.

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023 started on July 30 and will conclude on August 20 in Sri Lanka.

As many as five teams will compete in a total of 24 matches across three weeks in the fourth edition of the Lanka Premier League.

Some of the world's leading T20 batters including the likes of Babar Azam, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Tim Seifert are featuring in the Sri Lankan T20 League.

Bangladesh’s young batter Towhid Hridoy slammed the first fifty of LPL 2023. Representing defending champions Jaffna Kings, Hridoy smashed 54 off 39 balls against Colombo Strikers in the opening match of the ongoing T20 tournament.

Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam has also started his LPL 2023 campaign on a good note. Azam hammered a brilliant half-century for Colombo Strikers against B-Love Kandy at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Dhananjaya de Silva, Kusal Mendis, Tim Seifert and Nuwanidu Fernando have also produced some scintillating batting performances for their respective franchises in the ongoing LPL.

Sri Lanka’s swashbuckling batter Avishka Fernando finished with the most runs in the Lanka Premier League last season. Playing for his former LPL franchise Jaffna Kings, Avishka Fernando scored 339 runs in 10 matches at an average of 37.66 and a strike rate of 124.63. Wicketkeeper-batter Sadeera Samarawickrama was the second-highest run-scorer with 294 runs in nine matches.

Danushka Gunathilaka was the leading run-scorer in the inaugural Lanka Premier League in 2020. Representing Galle Gladiators (now named Galle Titans), Gunathilaka accumulated 476 runs in 10 matches at an impressive average of 59.50 and a strike rate of 144.68.

Galle Gladiators�?Kusal Mendis finished with the most runs in the second edition of LPL. The flamboyant wicketkeeper-batter scored 327 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 148.63.

The Lanka Premier League 2023 started on Sunday, July 30, with defending champions Jaffna Kings locking horns with Colombo Strikers in the opening fixture at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Organised by Sri Lanka Cricket, the fourth edition of the Lanka Premier League will see five teams play a total of 24 T20 matches over three weeks.

B-Love Kandy, Colombo Strikers, Dambulla Aura, Galle Titans and Jaffna Kings are the five teams that are competing for the Lanka Premier League 2023 title.

As per the Lanka Premier League 2023 schedule, each team will play the other twice in a double round-robin format. The top four teams in the standings after all the league matches will qualify for the LPL 2023 playoffs.

The top two teams in the standings will clash in Qualifier 1 for a place in the Lanka Premier League 2023 final. Meanwhile, the third-placed and fourth-placed teams will square off against each other in the LPL 2023 Eliminator for a spot in Qualifier 2. Both the Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator will be held on August 17.

The winner of the Eliminator will later face the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2 on August 19 for a chance to advance to the LPL 2023 final.

The Lanka Premier League 2023 final will be played at the R.Premadasa Stadium on August 20.

Apart from the R Premadasa Stadium, the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium will also host a few LPL 2023 matches.

Reigning champions Jaffna Kings are the most successful team in the Lanka Premier League, having won all the three previous editions in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
