Established before India’s independence in 1945, Green Park Stadium is a world-class cricket stadium located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Situated in the Civil Lines area in the northeastern part of Kanpur near the banks of the river Ganga, the stadium is named after Madam Green who used to practice horse riding in the 1940s. It is the only international venue in the country which is not owned by a state cricket association and is run by the Sports department of Uttar Pradesh.

Kanpur’s cricket stadium staged its first international Test match in 1952 against England and has since then hosted 22 Tests, 15 ODIs and one T20I.

Currently, the stadium has a seating capacity of around 45,000 including a student gallery and possesses the world's largest manually operated scoreboard.

The Indian cricket team has remained unbeaten at this venue in Test cricket since 1983, last losing to the mighty West Indies. India have won seven Tests, lost three and drawn 12 matches at Green Park Stadium.

It is the home ground of the Uttar Pradesh cricket team and has also hosted several first-class matches at this venue. 

Here, we look at the Test and first-class records made at Green Park.

Green Park Stadium Test records

Highest team total: India posed 676/7 against Sri Lanka in a Test match in 1986, which is the highest team total at Green Park in the longest format. After Sri Lanka registered 420 in their first innings, the hosts rode on Sunil Gavaskar’s 176, Mohammed Azharuddin’s 199 and captain Kapil Dev’s 163 to put up a mammoth score on the board. The Test match ended in a draw.

Highest individual score: Former West Indies opening batter Faoud Bacchus boasts of the highest individual score at Green Park Stadium in Test cricket. Bacchus�?250 powered the visitors to 452/8 in reply to India’s 644/7d in the first innings in 1979. The Test ended in a dull draw. 

Best bowling figures: Former India off-spinner Jasubhai Patel holds the record of the best bowling figures at Kanpur in the longest format. Jasubhai Patel picked nine wickets for 69 runs to restrict Australia to 219 in their first innings in 1959. The off-spinner brought India back into the game after the hosts were bowled out for 152 in the first innings. India eventually won the match by 119 runs.

Most runs: Former India cricketer Gundappa Viswanath has scored the most runs at Green Park in Kanpur in Tests. The right-handed batter amassed 776 runs in seven Test matches at a staggering average of 86.22. He has smashed three hundreds and four fifties at this venue.

Most wickets: Former India cricket team captain Kapil Dev has claimed the most wickets at the Green Park Stadium. The right-arm pacer has bagged 25 wickets in seven Test matches with best bowling figures of 6/63.

Highest partnership: Mohammad Azharuddin and Kapil Dev hold the record for the highest partnership at the Green Park Stadium. The former Indian duo forged a massive 272-run partnership for the sixth wicket against Sri Lanka in a Test match in December 1986. While Mohammad Azharuddin scored 199, Kapil Dev slammed 163 as the opening Test of a two-match series later ended in a draw.

Green Park Stadium first-class records

Highest team total: Tamil Nadu posted a mammoth 696/5d against Uttar Pradesh in a first-class encounter in the 1999-2000 season, which is the highest team total ever posted at the venue.

Lowest team total: Uttar Pradesh’s 62 is the lowest team total at this venue in Kanpur. After Bengal posted 193 in their first innings, their bowlers bundled out the hosts for a humiliating score. Ranadeb Bose was the wrecker-in-chief for Bengal, picking five wickets for just 18 runs.

Highest individual score: Tamil Nadu’s Sridharan Sriram had smashed 288 against Uttar Pradesh in a first-class game in the 1999-2000 season. It is still the highest individual score registered at Green Park.

Best bowling figures in an innings: Uttar Pradesh’s Ashish Zaidi holds the record for the best bowling figures in an innings at Green Park. The former fast bowler scalped nine wickets for 45 runs against Vidarbha in a first-class encounter in the 1999-2000 season.

Highest partnership: Karnataka’s Ravikumar Samarth and Mayank Agarwal registered the highest partnership (unbeaten 262) at the venue against hosts Uttar Pradesh in first-class cricket in 2017-18 season.

Legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble has picked the most wickets for India across formats in international cricket.

Having made his international debut against England in a Test match in 1990, Kumble went on to claim 953 wickets for India in 401 matches at an average of 30.06.

The Bangalore-born cricketer ended his career with 619 Test wickets in 132 matches at an average of 29.65. He picked 35 five-wicket hauls and eight 10-wicket hauls. 

Kumble also played 269 One-Day International (ODI) matches between 1990 and 2007, bagging 334 wickets at an average of ​�?/span>30.83.

Among active players, Ravichandran Ashwin has the most wickets for India across formats. Ashwin features second on the list as he has scalped 744 wickets in 281 matches so far. The second-highest wicket-taker for India Tests, Ashwin has so far tallied 516 scalps in 100 Tests followed by 156 wickets in ODIs and 72 wickets in the T20Is.

Former spinner Harbhajan Singh is third on the list of most wickets for India across formats. The quality off-spinner picked 707 wickets in 365 matches at an average of 32.59.

Harbhajan made his Test debut against Australia in 1998 and ended his career with 417 wickets in 103 matches in the longest format.  

Fondly known as ‘The Turbantor�? Harbhajan also featured in 234 ODIs, claiming 265 wickets at an average of 33.47.

Former fast bowler Kapil Dev and seamer Zaheer Khan complete the top five list of most wickets for India across formats.

The 1983 World Cup-winning captain, Kapil Dev, picked 687 wickets for India in 356 matches. An impressive 434 of those 687 wickets came in the longest format while 253 were picked in ODI cricket.

On the other hand, the 2011 World Cup winner Zaheer Khan bagged 597 wickets in 303 matches.

Former leg-spinner Anil Kumble holds the record for the most Test wickets for India.

The Karnataka-born cricketer picked 619 wickets in 132 Test matches that included 35 five-wicket hauls and eight 10-wicket hauls. Kumble is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket history.

In 1999, he etched his name into history books as he became just the second bowler to claim 10 wickets in an innings in a Test after England’s Jim Laker.

Since making his Test debut against England in 1990, Kumble played a vital role in helping India win Test matches against various opponents both at home and abroad. He formed a lethal partnership with India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, scalping a combined 501 wickets in 54 matches, the most by any spin bowling pair.

Kumble played his last Test match against Australia at Feroz Shah Kotla in 2008.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin features second on the list for most wickets for India in Tests. Ashwin overtook former captain Kapil Dev to climb second in the list for most wickets for India in Tests. The legendary bowler became the second Indian bowler to bag 500 wickets in Test cricket. He achieved the incredible feat during the third Test of England's tour of India 2024 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

Former India captain Kapil Dev is third-highest Test wicket-taker for India. The right-arm fast bowler picked 434 wickets in 131 matches at an average of 29.64.

India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and seamer Ishant Sharma complete the top five list of most wickets for India in Tests.

While Harbhajan Singh has claimed 417 wickets in 103 matches. seamer Ishant Sharma has scalped 311 wickets in 105 matches.

During ICC World Cup 2023, right-arm fast bowler Mohammed Shami scripted history to become the record holder for the most wickets for India in ODI World Cup.

Since making his ODI World Cup debut in 2015, Mohammed Shami has picked 55 wickets in just 18 matches.

The previous record for the most wickets for India in ODI World Cup history was held by former left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan. He took 44 wickets in 23 matches.

Shami surpassed Zaheer Khan during Indian cricket team’s ICC World Cup 2023 clash against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

With 55 wickets to his name, Shami also entered in the top 10 list of most wickets in ICC World Cup.

Among active cricketers, only Australia’s Mitchell Starc (59) and New Zealand’s Trent Boult (49) are above Shami in the list.

The likes of Javagal Srinath, Jasprit Bumrah and Anil Kumble feature in the top five list of most wickets for India in ODI World Cup.

Mohammed Shami | 55 wickets in 18 matches

Pacer Mohammed Shami holds the record for the most wickets for India in ODI World Cup. Having played in three editions of the ODI World Cup in 2015, 2019 and 2023, Shami has already claimed 55 wickets in 18 matches at an average of 13.52 and an economy of 5.13. The Uttar Pradesh-born cricketer has four five-wicket hauls to his name in the marquee 50-over tournament’s history.

Zaheer Khan | 44 wickets in 23 matches

Former left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan is second on the list for most wickets for India in ODI World Cup. Between 2003 and 2011, Zaheer Khan bagged 44 wickets in 23 matches at an average of 20.22 and an economy of 4.47. He was the joint-highest wicket-taker in 2011 ODI World Cup with 21 wickets in nine matches. Zaheer’s scintillating performance helped guide India to the ICC World Cup 2011 title. 

Javagal Srinath | 44 wickets in 34 matches

Javagal Srinath features third on the list for most wickets for India in ODI World Cup. After making his ODI World Cup debut in 1992, the right-arm pacer finished his illustrious career with 44 ODI World Cup wickets in 34 matches at an average of 27.81 and an economy of 4.32. He scalped two four-wicket hauls in the ICC ODI World Cups. He was part of the Indian team that reached the final of the ICC World Cup 2003 in South Africa.

The Indian cricket team has participated in every edition of the ODI World Cup since its inception in 1975.

Led by captain Srinivas Venkataraghavan, India competed in the inaugural edition of the ICC ODI World Cup in England.  

Having managed one win and two losses, Srinivas Venkataraghavan’s men were knocked out in the group stage of the 1975 Cricket World Cup.

In 1979, India experienced another dismal campaign as they lost all their three group matches and were eliminated in the group stage.

Four years later, the Kapil Dev-led Indian cricket team scripted history as they stunned two-time defending champions West Indies in the final to clinch the 1983 Cricket World Cup.

Since then, India has been one of the most successful sides in ODI World Cup history. 

How many times India won ODI World Cup

India has won the ODI World Cup on two occasions in 1983 and 2011. Team India is the joint second-most decorated team in ODI World Cup history along with West Indies.

After winning their maiden ODI World Cup title in England in 1983, India clinched their second ODI World Cup title under MS Dhoni in India in 2011.

They also finished as runners-up at the 2003 World Cup. The Men in Blue have reached the semi-finals four times in 1987, 1996, 2015 and 2019.

Meanwhile, Australia is the most successful team in the tournament’s history with five titles.

1983 ICC World Cup 

The Kapil Dev-led India were placed in Group B alongside West Indies, Australia and Zimbabwe.

India started their campaign in an emphatic fashion as they stunned two-time defending champions West Indies by 34 runs at Old Trafford in Manchester. 

Kapil Dev’s men continued their impressive start as they registered a comprehensive five-wicket win over Zimbabwe in Leicester.

However, India later suffered back-to-back setbacks as they lost to Australia by 162 runs and West Indies by 66 runs in their next two group matches.

After the two losses, India needed to beat Australia and Zimbabwe by huge margins to qualify for the semi-finals.

India later bounced back to defeat Zimbabwe by 31 runs at Tunbridge Wells to stay in contention for a place in the last four.

They followed it up with another 118-run win over Australia to qualify for the semi-finals for the first time in their Cricket World Cup history.

In the semi-finals, India produced another brilliant performance to beat hosts England by six wickets.

Up against two-time reigning champions West Indies, India started as underdogs in the final. 

They were bowled out for 183 in 54.4 overs. However, the bowlers responded as they bundled out West Indies for 140 in 52 overs to help India claim their maiden ODI World Cup.

2011 ICC World Cup 

Co-hosts India were one of the favourites to win the 2011 ICC World Cup. Led by captain MS Dhoni, the team possessed several match-winners including Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh.

India began their campaign with a 87-run win over Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. 

India later faced England at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The high-scoring encounter ended in a thrilling tie.

MS Dhoni’s men continued their good run as they defeated Ireland by five wickets and Netherlands by five wickets in their next two matches.

They later suffered their first defeat as the hosts went down to South Africa by three wickets in Nagpur.

Gary Kirsten’s India soon bounced back to beat West Indies by 80 runs to finish as the second-placed team in Group B with nine points from six matches.

In the quarter-finals, India overcame then four-time defending champions Australia by five wickets to storm into the last four.

India were scheduled to face arch-rivals Pakistan in Mohali and they continued their scintillating form as they beat Pakistan by 29 runs to set-up a mouth-watering final with Sri Lanka.

India later became the first host nation to clinch the ODI World Cup as they defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets to bag their second title.

Anil Kumble | 35 fifers in 132 Tests

No bowler has won India more Test matches than the legendary Anil Kumble. Regarded as one of the greatest leg-spinners in Test cricket history, Kumble recorded 35 five-wicket hauls to his name. Only Muttiah Muralitharan (67), Shane Warne (37) and Richard Hadlee (36) finished their career with more five-wicket hauls in Test cricket. In his 18-year-long career, Kumble picked up 619 wickets in 132 Tests at an average of 29.65. 

Ravichandran Ashwin | 34 fifers in 93 Tests

Ravichandran Ashwin has been India’s biggest match-winner with the ball in Test cricket since making his debut against West Indies in 2011. The off-spinner has already registered 34 five-wicket hauls in the longest format of the game. Ashwin is currently India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket with 486 dismissals in just 93 matches at an impressive average of 23.61. 

 

 

Harbhajan Singh | 25 fifers in 103 Tests

Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh has the third-most five wicket-hauls for India in Test cricket. The right-arm off-spinner bagged 25 five-wicket hauls in 103 Tests. Having made his Test debut against Australia in 1998, Harbhajan finished his Test career with 417 wickets at an average of 32.46.

Kapil Dev | 23 fifers in 131 Tests

Former India captain Kapil Dev is fourth on the list for the five wicket-hauls for India in Test cricket. Between 1978 and 1994, Kapil Dev claimed 23 five-wicket hauls in 131 Tests for the Indian cricket team. He finished his legendary career with 434 Test wickets at an average of 29.64.

Bhagwath Chandrasekhar | 16 fifers in 58 Tests

Former leg-spinner Bhagwath Chandrasekhar completes the top five list for most five wicket-hauls for India in Test cricket. Considered to be one of India’s biggest match-winners overseas in the 1960s and 70s, Chandrasekhar picked up 16 fifers in 58 Tests. He ended his career with 242 Test wickets at an average of 29.74.

England all-rounder and Test captain Ben Stokes has hit the most sixes in Tests. He recently overtook Brendon McCullum to take top spot for most sixes in Tests.

Stokes, who is captaining England in Tests, is likely to extend his lead for sixes in Test cricket with a lot of red-ball cricket ahead of him.

Stokes, in fact, went past McCullum's record with the New Zealander as the coach of the English Test team. England's aggressive style of Test cricket means that Stoke is likely to finish his career with a sizeable lead as far as sixes in Tests go.

Meanwhile, after making his Test debut against South Africa in 2004, Brendon McCullum smashed 107 sixes in the 101 Tests that he played.

Considered to be one of the most destructive batters in modern cricket history, the former New Zealand captain amassed 6,453 runs in 101 matches at an average of 38.64. His strike rate in Tests was a healthy 64.6.

Interestingly, McCullum holds the record for the fastest Test century, having reached the milestone off just 54 balls against arch-rivals Australia in Christchurch in 2016. He was eventually dismissed for 145 off just 79 balls, which included 21 fours and six sixes.

McCullum features fourth on the list of most sixes in international cricket, having smashed 398 sixes in 474 matches. Only West Indies�?Chris Gayle (553), Shahid Afridi of Pakistan (476) and India’s Rohit Sharma (464) have hit more sixes in international cricket.

Former Australian wicket-keeper batter Adam Gilchrist has also hit 100 sixes in Tests. 

While Gilchrist clobbered 100 sixes in 96 Tests, Stokes has smashed the same number of sixes in just 82 Tests.

Chris Gayle and former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis complete the top five list of most sixes in Tests. Gayle hit 98 sixes in the 103 Test matches that he played while Kallis smashed 97 sixes in 166 Tests.

Virender Sehwag has hit the most sixes in Test match cricket for an Indian. The former opening batter hit 91 sixes in 104 Tests and features sixth on the list of most sixes in Tests. Sehwag managed 243 sixes in 374 matches in international cricket.

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni features second on the list of most sixes by Indians in Tests. The former India captain smashed 78 sixes in the 90 Tests that he played between 2005 and 2014.

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar is third on the list of most sixes by Indians in Tests. Having made his Test debut against Pakistan in 1989, Tendulkar hit 69 sixes in 200 Tests. The India cricket legend ended his illustrious career with 264 sixes in 664 matches.

Rohit Sharma and Kapil Dev complete the top five list of most sixes by Indians in Tests. While Rohit has smashed 66 sixes in just 46 Test matches, Kapil Dev hit 61 sixes in 131 Tests.

Former South Africa cricketer Shaun Pollock has bowled the most maiden overs in ODI cricket.

Having made his one-day international (ODI) debut against England in 1996, the right-arm pacer bowled 313 maiden overs in 303 ODIs. 

Interestingly, Pollock is the only cricketer to have bowled more than 300 maiden overs in ODI history.

Considered to be one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time, Pollock picked 393 wickets at an impressive economy of 3.68 and an average of 24.51.

The former Proteas captain played his last ODI match against West Indies in 2008 as he ended with five five-wicket hauls in his scintillating career.

Apart from Pollock, former Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath and Sri Lanka left-arm pacer Chaminda Vaas have bowled the second most maiden overs in ODI cricket.

Both McGrath and Vaas registered 279 maidens in their respective ODI careers. While McGrath bagged 381 ODI wickets in 250 matches at an average of 22.02, Vaas claimed 400 wickets in 322 ODI matches at an economy of 4.18.

Former Pakistan left-arm speedster Wasim Akram features next on the list. Often regarded as one of the most lethal pacers of all time, Akram bowled 237 maidens in his ODI career, scalping 502 ODI wickets in 356 matches at an average of 23.52 and an economy of 3.89.

India 1983-World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev is also among the best, with 235 maiden overs in ODIs. In his 16-year-old ODI career, Dev scalped 253 wickets in 225 matches at an average of 27.45 and an economy of 3.72

Former Sri Lanka off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan bowled 198 maiden overs in ODI cricket while former West Indies fast bowler Curtly Ambrose registered 192 maiden overs in his ODI career.

New Zealand cricketer Richard Hadlee, West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh and New Zealand’s Ewen Chatfield complete the top 10 list.

While Richard Hadlee and Courtney Walsh bowled 185 maiden overs each, Ewen Chatfield registered 155 maidens in the ODI format.

Meanwhile, India’s Jhulan Goswami holds the record for the most maiden overs in women’s ODI cricket. Goswami has bowled 260 maidens in 199 matches.

The India women’s cricket team pacer broke the record held by former England cricketer Clare Taylor, who had bowled 205 maiden overs in her career. 

India’s Neetu David (189), Australia cricketer Cathryn Fitzpatrick (188) and Katherine Brunt of England are the other three players to have bowled more than 150 maiden overs in women’s ODI cricket.

Kapil Dev’s highest score is an unbeaten 175 off just 138 balls against Zimbabwe, which came on June 18, 1983, during the ODI World Cup.

The former Indian captain bailed his team out of misery by putting on a one-man show, which helped the team win the match, and eventually, lift the World Cup.

India, after having decided to bat first, underwent a humiliating top-order collapse, with none of the top five batters managing scores in double figures. In fact, two of those five men, including openers Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth, failed to open their accounts.

Zimbabwe’s bowlers had exploited the great bowling pitch of Tunbridge Wells Stadium to the fullest. And with India now staring down the barring, Kapil Dev arrived amidst little expectations at a time when his team was reeling at 9/4.

The Indian captain made a cautious start to his innings, with Roger Binny providing much-needed support from the other end. Despite his best efforts, Binny could only muster 22 runs while new batter Ravi Shastri departed for just one. 

With seven wickets lost inside 80 runs, Kapil Dev stitched a 62-run partnership with tail-ender Madan Lal to take India from 78/7 to 140/8.

India had saved themselves from utter humiliation, but the job was far from done. In order to win, they needed to post a total that they could defend and 140 sure wasn’t it. 

By the time India’s No. 11 Syed Kirmani walked onto the field, everything seemed lost, but Kapil Dev did manage to reach his half-century in the 49th over. ODI matches were earlier played for 60 overs.

The duo went on to add 126 runs together, the highest partnership for ninth wicket in ODI cricket back then, while the Indian skipper scored 75 runs in the final 11 overs as India finished the innings at 266/8.

Kapil Devi finished with 175 runs off 138 balls. His innings included 16 fours and six sixes. He was the only Indian to hit a six in the innings.

The Indian bowling attack did the rest as the team somehow managed to restrict Zimbabwe at 235 to win the match by 31 runs. It is largely believed that this particular win was the biggest catalyst in India winning the World Cup title that year.

No telecast of the iconic innings

It’s a general belief that the reason why India vs Zimbabwe wasn’t telecast was because BBC was on strike. But in reality, the broadcasters had no space to adjust this match in the calendar since, on June 18, as many as four games were being played.

BBC only had two TV crews and they decided this particular match did not hold any significance.

The decision simply backfired as the match witnessed one of the best individual performances in the history of the game.
