Cricket is a sport fueled by passion, precision, and national pride. Over the years, there have been key moments that shaped the way the sport is viewed and played. These iconic highlights such as dramatic last-ball victories, record-breaking scores, daring plays, and displays of sheer sportsmanship continue to echo through stadiums and conversations among fans around the world.

From fierce duels to jaw-dropping wins, here are some of the most iconic moments in cricket history that defined the sport:

India's epic win in 1983

In 1983, India made cricket history that still inspires fans today. It was the ICC Cricket World Cup, and few believed that India could win. The team faced the mighty West Indies, who had won the previous two titles.

In the match, India batted first and scored just 183 runs. Many thought this was a small total, but the bowlers stepped up to defend it. Earlier in the tournament, Kapil Dev played a legendary 175-run knock against Zimbabwe. His knock was full of grit and skill, rallying the team and shifting the game's tide.

When the West Indies came to bat, they were confident, but India’s bowlers delivered an impressive performance. They took crucial wickets and kept the West Indies from chasing down the score. The West Indies, known for their fierce batting, faltered under pressure against India’s epic play.

The start of One-Day Cricket (ODI)

The introduction of ODI cricket in the early 1970s revolutionised the cricket industry. This new format brought a fresh, fast-paced style that drew in fans and made matches more exciting. It was a shift from the long Test matches, allowing everyone to enjoy a full game in just one day.

Malinga's four wickets in 2007

In the 2007 Cricket World Cup, a thrilling match took place between Sri Lanka and South Africa. The game was intense, with South Africa chasing a target set by Sri Lanka. They looked strong and confident, but then came a moment that would be remembered forever.

Lasith Malinga, the Sri Lankan bowler known for his pace and unique style, took to the field and stepped up to bowl. In just one over, he took four wickets, stunning the crowd and players alike.

West Indies' T20 dominance

West Indiesâ€?match against England in the 2016 T20 World Cup was full of excitement, with the West Indies needing a big score in the last over to claim the title. Carlos Brathwaite stepped up to bat, and the tension was high.

The West Indies had fought hard, but the game was still in the balance. After a hard-fought battle, Carlos Brathwaite faced Ben Stokes and, with remarkable composure, hit four consecutive sixes to seal the victory for the West Indies. Each shot sent the ball soaring over the boundary, leaving the crowd in awe. With those sixes, he not only won the match but also sealed the West Indies' place as T20 giants.

These moments live on—not just in stats or clips, but in the hearts of fans. While new cricket stars will rise, these moments will stand the test of time, inspiring fans and players alike.

India’s official cricket governing body defends its decision to continue the India-South Africa Test cricket match held in Delhi between November 14 and 18. Even with the concerns of pollution, the decision still stands.

Secretary Devajit Saikia said, ‘We have considered all factors and have gone by the rotation policy after discussing it with everyone. The pollution issue doesn't happen every year.nbsp;

Delhi was known to have struggled with high air pollution levels around November. In recent years, the capital city has suffered from an air quality index that reached ‘severeâ€?levels.

This was not the first time it happened. Two major leagues in 2016 and 2017 were also cancelled due to extreme pollution. In these events, players suffered from headaches and burning feelings in their eyes.

Amid concerns, Ashok Sharma, an official of Delhi’s cricket organisation, stated that they would follow all possible measures so the cricket players can compete in the Test match comfortably.

‘Also, the Arun Jaitley Stadium is located in a relatively open area with more green area around. So the air quality is better than in most other areas,â€?he added to further reassure the people.

Group Stage

India vs. Bangladesh

India’s first hurdle in the group stage was Bangladesh. The team’s strong openers posed a challenge, but India overcame the obstacles and dominated Bangladesh, winning by six wickets.

India vs. Pakistan

As longtime rivals, Pakistan went all out, relying on their biggest weapon against India—aggressive fast bowlers. However, India’s experience on the field proved superior, leading to a six-wicket victory.

India vs. New Zealand

New Zealand’s slow start gave India an early advantage, but NZ’s counterattack put IND under pressure. The high-intensity match between the two teams ended with a convincing win for India, who crushed New Zealand by four wickets.

Semi-finals

India vs. Australia

India started strong, knowing Australia’s team could easily shift the game’s momentum. However, the team’s elite bowlers quickly dismissed India’s openers. Despite their efforts, India’s resilience prevailed, securing a four-wicket victory and a spot in the final round.

Final

India vs. New Zealand

After their previous faceoff in the group stage, India and New Zealand met again—this time for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title. The grand finale has begun, and the coin has favoured New Zealand, which opted to bat first.

Captain Kane Williamson of New Zealand aimed to set a defendable target, but India’s disciplined bowling attacks put immense pressure on the Kiwi side.

Both teams had delivered exceptional performances throughout the tournament, but India's all-round performance secured them the championship victory.

Notable players

His composure and precision during the semi-final match with Australia and the finale with New Zealand were essential to the team’s success.

  1. Rohit Sharma

The captain’s explosive starts boosted India’s morale and gave the team a sturdy foundation for their next attacks. His century against Bangladesh was crucial to their road to victory.

  1. KL Rahul

Watch India as they conquer higher heights

Their impressive display of skill got them to where they are today. The well-deserved ICC Champions Trophy title is a fruit of the team’s hard work. From enduring the struggles they faced in the Group Stage to defeating elite teams in both the semi-finals and final rounds, the journey was not easy, but it was worth it for India.

England failed to steal the championship title, as India was triumphant last Sunday, March 23, 2025. India remains the undefeated champions of the Kabaddi World Cup in both men’s and women’s divisions.

At the match held in Wolverhampton, India destroyed England’s men’s kabaddi team with a score of 44-41. The women’s division was also victorious as they took home a landslide win against their opponents. The score ended in 57-34, in favour of India.

England team’s vice-captain, Sally Hill, expressed her appreciation for everyone’s support.

‘I think for Team England women, we're going to keep pushing forward.she said.

Despite the loss, the vice-captain also voiced her gratitude towards their opponents and stated that the whole event had been a special experience for them.

The recently concluded Kabaddi World Cup was historic as it was the first time the competition was held outside of Asia. Several matches happened in the West Midlands, namely Birmingham, Coventry, Walsall, and Wolverhampton, which were the final venues.

Paddy Power sponsored the World Cup, while the UK Government's Commonwealth Games Legacy Enhancement Fund provided £500,000. The University of Wolverhampton offered academic sponsorships as well.

India secured a dominant six-wicket win over Pakistan in their pivotal 2025 Champions Trophy Group A clash on February 23. Virat Kohli led the chase with an unbeaten century, helping India easily reach the target of 244-4 in 42.3 overs.

Not only did India win, but Kohli also set a record-breaking 14,000 runs in the match in just 287 innings. He is now the fastest batter to reach said figure in the history of ODI cricket. This is his 51st ODI century.

According to the star player, after losing top batter Rohit Sharma early in the game, it was his job to control the middle overs without taking too many risks. ‘It allowed me to play my usual ODI gameâ€? he shared.

Thanks to Shreyas Iyer’s solid support, India gained 56 more runs, with their top order never allowing Pakistan to gain control. This victory strengthens India’s chances of advancing to the semi-finals, while Pakistan’s hopes are now blurring out.

Pakistan struggles with the bat

Pakistan took off with the match after winning the toss and opting to bat. The team posted a total of 241 runs in 49.4 overs, with Saud Shakeel top-scoring with 62 off 76, sharing a 104-run stand with Mohammad Rizwan.

Despite a steady start, Pakistan’s middle order struggled against India’s tough bowling attack. India’s Kuldeep Yadav takes the second standout bowler, thanks to his spin attack which took 3 for 40, while Mohammed Shami helped contain the runs and take wickets.

Pakistan hoped for a bigger total, but wickets at crucial moments halted their momentum. Their inability to accelerate in the final overs proved costly, leaving India with a manageable chase.

70-280 would have been good on this pitch…[but] we lost wickets and our shot selection was poor. In turn, our middle-order crumbled Pakistan captain Rizwan pointed out. Disappointed, the captain knew they were making the same mistakes after the team’s defeat against New Zealand in the tournament’s opening match.

Pakistan, who won against India in the finals of the 2017 Champions Trophy that led to their win, will face Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on February 27.

India: Title favourite?

India’s win puts them in a strong position to qualify for the semi-finals, essentially crossing out Pakistan’s chance from the tournament. Their next match against New Zealand on March 02 in UAE will determine whether they finish at the top of Group A—giving them an edge in the knockout stage fixture.

With Kohli returning to form and their bowlers performing well, India appears to be one of the favourites for the title. If they continue to play in this state, they’re one strong contender for the Champions Trophy.

England suffered a heavy 142-run defeat against India in the third and final ODI played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With this loss, India won the series 3-0. England struggled in both batting and bowling, showing the same problems seen throughout the tour.

Chasing 356, England collapsed to 214 all out in just 34.2 overs. Tom Banton, brought in to replace the injured Jacob Bethell in England’s Champions Trophy squad, managed to score 38 runs. However, poor shot selection haunted England’s batters once again. Ben Duckett, who appeared to be carrying a groin injury, was dismissed cheaply.

India’s bowlers made things difficult for England, with Axar Patel (2-22) and Harshit Rana (2-31) taking key wickets. England’s batting woes were clear again, and they had no answer to India’s strong bowling attack.

This defeat follows England’s 4-1 loss in the T20 series. Their next match is against Australia in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy on February 22. They have a lot of improvements to make before they can bounce back.

England’s batting problems continue

England’s batting struggles were evident throughout the series. In eight matches, they were bowled out six times, showing major problems in handling both spin and pace. Their inability to handle these issues showed weaknesses in the lineup.

Duckett and Phil Salt gave England a good start with a 60-run opening partnership. However, Duckett played a bad shot and was dismissed by Ardeep Singh. Salt soon followed, carelessly losing his wicket. Joe Root and Banton built another decent stand, taking England to 126-2, from there, things fell apart.

India’s spinners took control. Kuldeep Yadav got Banton out, while Axar Patel bowled Root. Jos Buttler and Harry Brook hit the ball onto their stumps while facing Harshit’s pace. England kept losing wickets quickly. From that point, there was no hope of a successful chase.

England’s struggles against spin are a major issue. Across this tour, they have lost 42 wickets to spinners at a very low average of 17.6 runs per dismissal. If they don’t improve, they will continue to lose in subcontinent conditions.

India’s batting sets the standard

India showed England how to bat with a patient yet calculated approach. Shubman Gill led with 112 from 102 balls. Shreyas Iyer (78) and Virat Kohli (52) also made crucial contributions.

India didn’t rush in the powerplay, reaching 52-1. But after that, they increased their scoring, punishing England’s weak bowling attack.

England’s bowlers had some good moments. Adil Rashid took 4-64, including a brilliant delivery to dismiss Hardik Pandya. Mark Wood also impressed well, taking 2-45. But England lacked variety and control in their bowling, which allowed India to reach 356 runs.

The official governing body also shared a video of Indian star players. It contains messages of encouragement for people to join the initiative. Aside from Virat Kohli, some of the cricket stars who will be joining are KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Axar Patel.

Team IND’s ODI vs ENG

India is currently leading the series at 2-0 after winning the first two ODIs held in Nagpur and Cuttack, respectively. Kohli missed playing in the 1st ODI due to a knee injury but made his return for the 2nd match, scoring 5 runs off 8.

As one of India’s best cricketers in modern history, Rohit Sharma already had an illustrious career. Since making his debut in 2007, Sharma has continued to cement himself in the record books. His latest milestone is becoming the second-highest six-hitter in ODI history, with 338 sixes.

Sharma reached this feat during India’s ODI match against England, delivering an excellent batting performance. He surpassed former West Indies superstar Chris Gayle who had 331 sixes. However, Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi remains the record-holder with 351 ODI sixes.

Sharma’s focus on getting the win

Before the ODI fixture against England, Sharma was in a batting drought. This led to him getting criticised for his productivity, but he silenced his critics with his performance against the Three Lions. The target was 305 runs, and India won it 308/6.

‘I said after the last match as well, we want to get better as a team and as players. As long guys are clear what they are supposed to do and whatever the captain and coach is saying, if they execute it then there's not much to think aboutâ€? he said.

The Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) is one of the oldest sport stadiums located in the Moore Park suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Established in 1948, the Sydney Cricket Ground is owned and operated by Venues NSW, an agency of the Government of New South Wales. The SCG has a seating capacity of 48,000.

It is the home ground of the Australia cricket team, New South Wales Blues cricket team and the Sydney Sixers of the Big Bash League.

The Sydney Cricket Ground hosted its first international cricket match, a Test played between arch-rivals Australia and England in February 1882. The Billy Murdoch-led Australia won the Ashes Test by five wickets.

Since then, it has staged more than 110 Tests so far. With that being said, let’s have a look at the Sydney Cricket Ground Test records and stats.
