Racism in cricket is one of the darkest truths that continue to draw blood from the sport. It showcases how players are condemned to racial slurs or monikers that carry ill intent.

Earlier this year, in India’s third Test against Australia in Sydney, Indian cricketers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj alleged racial abuse from the crowd and lodged a complaint, tainting what had been an otherwise competitive series on the field.

Later, South African players, meanwhile, showed their support for the Black Lives Matter movement by raising their fists ahead of their Boxing Day Test against Sri Lanka.

A country blighted by the apartheid, South Africa came under criticism earlier in the year for not “taking a knee?during their tour to England, adding another page to the controversies around racism.

The history of racist incidents in cricket largely ranges from remarks on skin colour and nationality. And despite the Anti-Discrimination Policy, these cases are still prevalent.

In the latest instance, England's Ollie Robinson was suspended for decade-old racist as well as sexist tweets that resurfaced following his Test debut against New Zealand.

Here are some instances of racism in cricket that rocked the sport:

Monkeygate

The Monkeygate saga is by far the ugliest controversy to have unfolded in Australia-India rivalry and one which still resonates today.

The incident, a verbal altercation between Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan Singh in an already-tense second Australia-India Test at Sydney in 2008, saw the Indian off-spinner allegedly call the Aussie a ‘Monkey?

Image courtesy: AFP / Prakash Singh

Sachin Tendulkar, a key witness in the episode, gave his inputs to the umpires stating that Harbhajan used the north-Indian phrase ?/span>teri ma ki?- a derogatory slang in Hindi referencing the mother.

While the umpires claimed to have not heard the use of the word as Andrew Symonds claimed, they reported Harbhajan Singh to the match referee. After a four-hour hearing, the Indian off-spinner was declared to have breached Level 3 of the ICC's Code of Conduct and was given a three-Test ban.

However, three weeks later, Harbhajan Singh was declared not guilty of racially abusing Andrew Symonds, as the Aussie failed to identify if the Indian had used the word monkey or a Hindi abuse. The level of the offence was reduced to abuse and ‘insult not amounting to racism? Harbhajan Singh accepted the charge and was fined 50 per cent of his match fees.

The two reportedly buried the hatchet when they eventually became team-mates for team Mumbai in the 2011 edition of the Indian T20 League.

Darren Sammy called ?em>kalu?/strong>

West Indies?Darren Sammy grabbed headlines for his outburst when he revealed he and Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera were called ‘kalu?by their Indian counterparts in team Hyderabad in the Indian T20 League.

The former Windies captain, who thought the word meant ‘strong stallion? took to Instagram to vent out his frustration and stated that he learnt the actual meaning after watching an episode of comedian Hasan Minhaj’s show ‘Patriot Act?

The former all-rounder, in due course, put the incident to rest after revealing that he had a healthy conversation with a former Hyderabad team-mate, who said that the word was used ‘from a place of love?

Dean Jones?‘terrorist?comment on live TV

The late Dean Jones was one of the greatest players, and cricket commentators in the modern era but his infamous ‘terrorist?mention of South Africa’s Hashim Amla in the 2006 Colombo Test brought on the first case of racism in cricket in the modern era.

During the fourth day’s play of the second Test against Sri Lanka, Hashim Amla had taken the catch of Kumar Sangakkara and Dean Jones, part of the commentary team, was heard saying "the terrorist gets another wicket". Although the comment was made during a commercial break, it accidentally went on air as its broadcast had not been interrupted across the world.

Upon being sacked from the commentary panel, Dean Jones issued a personal apology to Hashim Amla and also apologised publicly, adding that his comments were “stupid?and not meant to be disrespectful to any individual or faith.

Moeen Ali labelled Osama

In 2018, Moeen Ali made an astonishing revelation that he was called ‘Osama?by an Australian international during the 2015 Ashes.

Image courtesy: AFP / Ian Kington

Moeen Ali, whose autobiography came out that year, spoke of his experience when he played for England in his first Ashes Test and then drew up the fact that didn’t sit down well during the course of that match. An excerpt from his book read, “An Australian player had turned to me on the field and said, 'Take that, Osama.' I could not believe what I had heard. I remember going really red. I have never been so angry on a cricket field.?/p>

While investigations were opened based on Moeen Ali’s revelation, Trevor Bayliss, head coach of the Three Lions at that point of time, stated that the all-rounder didn’t want to pursue the matter any further and thus, the scandal was quickly resolved. It is said that the unnamed Australian player walked up to Moeen Ali and settled the matter with his intended words of “Take that, part-timer.?/span>

Jofra Archer tweets about racism

England’s Jofra Archer became the latest cricketer to find himself as a victim of racism in cricket, after tweeting about a New Zealand fan who hurled racial slurs after his dismissal in the 2019 Test in Mount Maunganui.

In a set of tweets, with the first since being deleted, Jofra Archer called out the individual by stating, “Can the guy that was yelling bbc and bc from the scoreboard area today come forward and tell me what those words mean please? Because I don’t...?/span>

Upon this disclosure, New Zealand and England opened a joint-investigation and the culprit, who seemingly pleaded guilty, was given a two-year ban.

While these five instances are the most prominent cases of racism in cricket, the sporting world has also been troubled by cases such as Darren Lehmann’s ‘black c***s?comment against Sri Lanka in 2003, Herschelle Gibbs?‘animals who should go back to the zoo?jibe at Pakistani supporters in 2007 and former Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed racially abusing South Africa’s Andile Phehlukwayo.

Compared to how complex the T20 format is, opening the innings is somewhat an undemanding task for the batsmen. With the field restrictions in place, batsmen can tee off in the first six overs of the innings. Even mishits can fetch them boundaries if they manage to clear the 30-yard-circle somehow. The same, however, might not be the case outside the powerplay overs. But then again, being good at this job is not easy either.

Power-hitting is an art which not only requires brute muscle strength, but also the positioning and shot selection. However, those who have limitations in terms of muscle strength need to find their own way of scoring runs. While there are power-hitters like Chris Lynn, Chris Gayle and Jonny Bairstow who are prolific at the top of the order, there are players like Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Jos Buttler among others, as well who depend more on clinical hitting to match up with the power hitters.

Since 2016, the aforementioned players along with others have entertained us with some fine performances at the top of the order in the Indian T20 League (Indian T20 League). So, it is a good time to find out how these openers stack up against each other.

David Warner - In a league of his own

The Australian batsman has been a force to reckon with at the top of the order. No other batsman with 100 or more runs as an opener since 2016 has higher runs per innings (RpI) than Warner. The southpaw scores at a high strike-rate of 146.08 along with having an RpI of 50.72 as well. He has amassed 2181 runs in 43 innings during this period and that includes two centuries and 21 fifties as well. So, he has gone past the 50-run mark every 1.87 innings.

No match for Sunil Narine's scoring rate

The Caribbean all-rounder has the worst RpI (21.12) among openers with 300 or more runs during this period but he has been the quickest scorer among all of them. There is no match to his strike-rate of 183.91. The next best is Buttler with a strike-rate of 157.97 followed by Bairstow with a figure of 157.24. Even though Narine gives no advantage in terms of volume of runs, his scoring rate makes him an excellent asset at the top of the order for Kolkata. He hits a four every 4.31 deliveries, the best among all of these batsmen, and a six every 9.24 deliveries, which is the second-best figure.

Kohli-Rahul and Bairstow-Buttler : Almost mirror-images of each other

All four of these batsmen are very different players with their own strengths, but the numbers of Kohli and Rahul, and Buttler and Bairstow are just marginally different. While Kohli scores marginally higher runs (44.85) per innings as compared to Rahul's 43.09, the latter scores at a slightly better strike-rate of 146.79 as compared to Kohli's 145.87. The same goes for Buttler and Bairstow as well. Buttler has a marginally higher strike-rate of 157.97 as compared to Bairstow's 157.24 but the latter has a slightly better RpI of 44.50 than that of the former's 42.13. Buttler, though, has played 14 innings more and thus has scored 566 runs more than Bairstow.

Chris Lynn a bit overrated?

An RpI of 33.08 and a strike-rate of 143.49 are certainly good figures for a T20 batsman but when you see that these numbers belong to someone like Chris Lynn, they start looking a bit underwhelming. These numbers are really good but when you look at players like Warner, Kohli, Rahul, Buttler and Bairstow beating Lynn in terms of both RpI and Strike-rate, you have to consider that Lynn's status as a T20 player is a bit hyped. That explains the lack of interest in him during the auctions last year to a certain extent. Mumbai bought him at his base price of INR 2 crore without any competition.

Hashim Amla was highly underrated

The South African batsman played the 2016 and 2017 editions of the Indian T20 League and amassed 576 runs in 15 innings at an RpI of 38.40 and a strike-rate of 143.28. And while his strike-rate is almost as good as Lynn, the RpI is even higher. Amla not only beats the Australian batsman in this aspect but is also ahead of other established players like Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Quinton de Kock and Shane Watson. Amla was so prolific that he smashed two tons and three fifties in those 15 innings as well.

Rohit Sharma not among the best

Rohit's Indian T20 League numbers as an opener are very surprising. He has amassed 915 runs in 30 innings since 2016 at an RpI of 30.50 and an ordinary strike-rate of 130.16. That's almost similar to Shikhar Dhawan's corresponding figures of 31.71 and 128.74. In T20 internationals during this period, Rohit has been a much better batsman. He is the highest run-getter in T20Is during this timeframe, having accumulated runs at an RpI and strike-rate of 31.51 and 151.12 respectively.

Chris Gayle not the same beast anymore, but still a T20 asset at this age

The 40-year-old Caribbean batsman is certainly not the beast he used to be once. He scored at a strike-rate of 153.98 and RpI of 40.44 in the Indian T20 League until 2015 but that has fallen to corresponding figures of 145.36 and 29.88 respectively since 2016. These figures might not be the same anymore but they are good enough to warrant a place in any T20 side ahead of many other batsmen.

As a wonderful decade of cricket ends, the T20s have gained more importance than ever and Test cricket has risen up from the ashes to capture the imagination of fans. The one format that has been steady and rich in viewing experience this decade has been the One Day format. As such, identifying a team for the decade is no easy task. However, we make a solid attempt backed by some telling numbers.

Openers

There are three outright contenders for the openers of the decade - Hashim Amla, David Warner and Rohit Sharma. The Indian opener is a must-pick given his outrageous numbers in the decade that include three double hundreds and a further 25 centuries. Amla and Warner have averages very close to each other - 49.76 and 47.88 respectively - but the South African trumps Warner for scoring nine more hundreds and performing well across conditions. As such, Rohit will be partnered by Amla at the top in our team.

Middle-order and wicket-keeper

The middle-order batsmen had a gala time in the decade with quite a few of them making impactful performances. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, both averaging above 60 (60.79 and 64.2 respectively) are no-brainers at numbers 3 and 4. They remain the most popular and exciting batsmen of the decade and have 42 and 21 hundreds respectively.

There are quite a few players including Ross Taylor, Eoin Morgan and Kane Williamson sticking their hand up in the middle-order, but Kumar Sangakkara, who had a sensational career and played five of the ten years in the decade makes it to the team at no 5. He averaged 52.96 with 15 centuries in the format in the decade and will be followed by the best all-rounder in the decade, Shakib Al Hasan. The Bangladesh middle-order batsman finished as the second-highest wicket-taker in the format this decade, taking 177 scalps at 30.15 and made a decent impact with the bat too.

The captain of the side has to be the Indian World Cup winning skipper, MS Dhoni. He had a terrific decade despite his recent slump in form. An average of 50-plus with 39 half-centuries and four hundreds makes Dhoni a terrific lower middle-order batsman in the format. His captaincy skills remain second to none and it is inevitable that he leads the team of the decade.

Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Kumar Sangakkara, Shakib Al Hasan, MS Dhoni (c & wk)

Bowlers

We have gone in with a 3-1 combination, with three pacers complemented by one spinner. Obviously, Shakib provides a sixth bowling option in the side with his more-than-handy stump-to-stump bowling. The choice for three pacers came from a wider pool that included Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Starc, Morne Morkel and Trent Boult. Imran Tahir is the irreplaceable spinner in the team of the decade. The South African picked up 173 wickets in 107 matches, averaging 24.83.

Among the pacers, we have Starc and Boult, two left-arm pacers who made a profound impact with their striking abilities as the first-choice picks. Bumrah and Malinga would ideally be in a one-on-one battle for the death over bowler's spot. Bumrah played just three years of ODI cricket and Malinga tops the wicket charts for the decade and as such the Sri Lankan pips the Indian pacer, with longevity being a major factor.

The year 2019 was all about Indian batting phenomenon, Rohit Sharma. It may well be the year of Ben Stokes- with his superb performances at the World Cup and that famous, Botham-esque chase in the Ashes Test at Headingley, but the Indian vice-captain can easily stake claim to the spot.

The opener has been at his prolific best in the calendar year, scoring centuries for fun, bamboozling opponents and even succeeding as India’s Test opener in that record-breaking series against South Africa.

Rohit Sharma scored 2442 runs across formats in 2019, the most by an opener in a calendar year, breaking the 22-year-old record held by Sanath Jayasuriya, with Virender Sehwag being the only other Indian in the top 5.

1490 runs of those were scored in ODIs, which made him the highest ODI run-getter in the year, 123 ahead of Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, who made 1377. However, the latter still holds the record for the most 50+ scores in a year (21), as compared to Rohit (20), both of them setting it in 2019. These records also made 2019 the most productive year in Rohit’s ODI career.

Virat Kohli- King of the decade

Virat Kohli completed his first full decade in international cricket and he completely bossed it. From the flamboyant youngster with seemingly no care about the rules, he transformed into a run-scoring, all-format beast, even taking over arguably the toughest job in world cricket-being the captain of the Indian team.

During his innings of 85 in the final ODI against West Indies, he surpassed the legendary Jacques Kallis to become the seventh-highest run-scorer in ODIs with 11,609 and reached the milestone in 71 innings fewer than Kallis.

His haul of 1377 ODI runs in 2019, made it only the third-most prolific year in his career, showing how well he has batted this decade. If that was not enough, Kohli scored 11,125 runs in ODIs this decade, almost 3000 ahead of teammate Rohit Sharma; incidentally it also made him the only batsman to score more than 10,000 ODI runs in this span of 10 years.

One of South Africa's greatest ever batsmen, Hashim Amla, announced his retirement from international cricket this week. After a lengthy international career, Amla bows out at 36 years with 124 Test caps, 181 ODI caps and 44 T20I caps for the Proteas. Here we take a glance at some of his iconic knocks.

100 vs England, Centurion 2009

Under the pump against a world-class attack on a deteriorating wicket, Amla dug in with AB de Villiers to lift South Africa out from the ruckus. Amla's technique had been questioned several times early in his career, but this knocked silenced a lot of critics for the sheer temperament he displayed.

An epic India tour of 2010

Perhaps Amla's legendary status began from this tour where he averaged a whopping 490. The South African made 253 walking in at 6/2 at Nagpur in the first Test to set up an innings victory. India won the next game at Eden Gardens but they faced a stiff challenge from Amla who made twin tons - 114 and 123*. His second innings effort dragged on for 394 balls and nearly gave South Africa a draw and a series win.

Triple ton vs England at The Oval

At The Oval in 2012, Amla made the first-ever triple hundred by a South African batsman. In the month of Ramadan, Amla fought tough conditions and a competitive bowling attack to bat for 13 long hours. He made 311 sharing double-century stands with Jacques Kallis and Graeme Smith.

150 in ODIs vs England in 2012

Hashim Amla was always seen as a good ODI player. His ground shots and ability to score at a strike rate of 90 or mo,re despite lacking the big hits. was often appreciated. But his best ODI innings came in the year of his triple ton in England itself. A superb 150 on opening the batting at Southampton is perhaps Amla's finest ever One Day International innings.

196 vs Australia at Perth

South Africa were well and truly ahead in the game when Amla walked in to bat for this Test match at Perth. But in carrying forward the momentum and driving home the advantage Amla played a pivotal role. He was unimaginably fluent and scored pretty quickly to send the Aussies on a leather hunt. Unusually, Amla was dominating the bowling attack like never before and made 196 before falling short of a double-ton.
