Established before India’s independence in 1945, Green Park Stadium is a world-class cricket stadium located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Situated in the Civil Lines area in the northeastern part of Kanpur near the banks of the river Ganga, the stadium is named after Madam Green who used to practice horse riding in the 1940s. It is the only international venue in the country which is not owned by a state cricket association and is run by the Sports department of Uttar Pradesh.

Kanpur’s cricket stadium staged its first international Test match in 1952 against England and has since then hosted 22 Tests, 15 ODIs and one T20I.

Currently, the stadium has a seating capacity of around 45,000 including a student gallery and possesses the world's largest manually operated scoreboard.

The Indian cricket team has remained unbeaten at this venue in Test cricket since 1983, last losing to the mighty West Indies. India have won seven Tests, lost three and drawn 12 matches at Green Park Stadium.

It is the home ground of the Uttar Pradesh cricket team and has also hosted several first-class matches at this venue.

Here, we look at the Test and first-class records made at Green Park.

Green Park Stadium Test records

Highest team total: India posed 676/7 against Sri Lanka in a Test match in 1986, which is the highest team total at Green Park in the longest format. After Sri Lanka registered 420 in their first innings, the hosts rode on Sunil Gavaskar’s 176, Mohammed Azharuddin’s 199 and captain Kapil Dev’s 163 to put up a mammoth score on the board. The Test match ended in a draw.

Highest individual score: Former West Indies opening batter Faoud Bacchus boasts of the highest individual score at Green Park Stadium in Test cricket. Bacchus?250 powered the visitors to 452/8 in reply to India’s 644/7d in the first innings in 1979. The Test ended in a dull draw.

Best bowling figures: Former India off-spinner Jasubhai Patel holds the record of the best bowling figures at Kanpur in the longest format. Jasubhai Patel picked nine wickets for 69 runs to restrict Australia to 219 in their first innings in 1959. The off-spinner brought India back into the game after the hosts were bowled out for 152 in the first innings. India eventually won the match by 119 runs.

Most runs: Former India cricketer Gundappa Viswanath has scored the most runs at Green Park in Kanpur in Tests. The right-handed batter amassed 776 runs in seven Test matches at a staggering average of 86.22. He has smashed three hundreds and four fifties at this venue.

Most wickets: Former India cricket team captain Kapil Dev has claimed the most wickets at the Green Park Stadium. The right-arm pacer has bagged 25 wickets in seven Test matches with best bowling figures of 6/63.

Highest partnership: Mohammad Azharuddin and Kapil Dev hold the record for the highest partnership at the Green Park Stadium. The former Indian duo forged a massive 272-run partnership for the sixth wicket against Sri Lanka in a Test match in December 1986. While Mohammad Azharuddin scored 199, Kapil Dev slammed 163 as the opening Test of a two-match series later ended in a draw.

Green Park Stadium first-class records

Highest team total: Tamil Nadu posted a mammoth 696/5d against Uttar Pradesh in a first-class encounter in the 1999-2000 season, which is the highest team total ever posted at the venue.

Lowest team total: Uttar Pradesh’s 62 is the lowest team total at this venue in Kanpur. After Bengal posted 193 in their first innings, their bowlers bundled out the hosts for a humiliating score. Ranadeb Bose was the wrecker-in-chief for Bengal, picking five wickets for just 18 runs.

Highest individual score: Tamil Nadu’s Sridharan Sriram had smashed 288 against Uttar Pradesh in a first-class game in the 1999-2000 season. It is still the highest individual score registered at Green Park.

Best bowling figures in an innings: Uttar Pradesh’s Ashish Zaidi holds the record for the best bowling figures in an innings at Green Park. The former fast bowler scalped nine wickets for 45 runs against Vidarbha in a first-class encounter in the 1999-2000 season.

Highest partnership: Karnataka’s Ravikumar Samarth and Mayank Agarwal registered the highest partnership (unbeaten 262) at the venue against hosts Uttar Pradesh in first-class cricket in 2017-18 season.

Legendary Jonty Rhodes is being considered as Indian cricket team’s new fielding coach, according to reports.

The development of Jonty Rhodes?appointment as India’s new fielding coach comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is in the final stages to make an overhaul in the Indian team management after the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the United States.

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir is currently leading the race to replace Rahul Dravid as India’s new head coach.

The report states that Gautam Gambhir has approached Jonty Rhodes to become a part of his support staff provided he bags the coveted job.

Gambhir is likely to bring his own support staff just like Rahul Dravid brought Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach) and T Dilip along with him.

Rhodes is currently the fielding coach of the Lucknow franchise in the Indian T20 League. He is also the fielding coach of the Durban franchise in the SA20 as well as the consultant fielding coach of the Sri Lanka national cricket team.

Previously, Gambhir and Rhodes have worked together for the Lucknow franchise. Earlier, the former Proteas cricketer was associated with five-time Indian T20 League winners Mumbai.

While Rhodes is yet to be formally approached by the BCCI, the legendary fielder previously applied for the role of India’s fielding coach in 2019.

However, he was not shortlisted as then head coach Ravi Shastri preferred Ramakrishnan Sridhar in order to keep his core team intact which also included B Arun as the bowling coach and Sridhar as the fielding coach.

If Gambhir is appointed India’s new head coach, Rhodes could replace T Dilip as India’s next fielding coach after the T20 World Cup 2024.

T Dilip has grabbed the headlines for his inspirational dressing room speeches and innovative fielding ceremonies in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.

With that being said, let’s have a look at the Indian cricket team fielding coaches list since 2007.

The iconic Eden Gardens is India’s oldest cricket stadium located in Kolkata, West Bengal.

Established in 1864, the Eden Gardens is often referred to as the home of Indian cricket and fondly called the "Mecca of Indian cricket", due to it being the first purpose-built ground for the sport.

Owned and operated by Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), it is the home ground of Team Kolkata in the Indian T20 League and the Bengal cricket team in domestic cricket.

Built during British rule, the Eden Gardens remained the largest cricket ground in India and Asia and the second-largest ground in the world, until the new Narendra Modi Stadium was inaugurated in Motera in February 2021.

With a current seating capacity of around 68,000, Eden Gardens is now India’s second-largest cricket stadium and third-largest in the world.

Eden Gardens has staged several important matches in major international competitions including the World Cup, World T20 and Asia Cup.

It became the second stadium to host a World Cup final in 1987. The 2016 T20 World Cup final between West Indies and England was also hosted at this venue.

Apart from international matches, it has also staged several Indian T20 League matches and other T20 matches in domestic as well as at club levels.

With that said, here’s a closer look at the Eden Gardens T20 records and stats.

Eden Gardens T20 records and stats

Highest total

The Uttar Pradesh cricket team holds the record for the highest total at the Eden Gardens in T20 cricket. During a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Super League Group B match in 2018, the Suresh Raina-led Uttar Pradesh posted 235/3 in their 20 overs against Bengal. Electing to bat first, the visitors rode on Suresh Raina’s unbeaten 126 off 59 balls and wicketkeeper-batter Akshdeep Nath’s 43-ball 80 to post a record T20 total at the venue. In reply, Bengal were bowled out for 160 in 16.1 overs as Uttar Pradesh won the game by 75 runs.

Lowest total

Team Bangalore registered the lowest total at the Eden Gardens in the T20 format. Chasing a target of 132, Bangalore were bundled out for 49 in just 9.4 overs by Team Kolkata during an Indian T20 League match in 2017. For Kolkata, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Chris Woakes and Colin de Grandhomme bagged three wickets each to help bowl out Bangalore for an embarrassing total. Interestingly, not a single Bangalore batter reached double digits as Kedar Jadhav top-scored with nine. Earlier, Kolkata were bowled out for 131 in 19.3 overs. The hosts won the game comprehensively by 82 runs.

Batting at number three, Suresh Raina smashed 126 not out off 59 balls against Bengal in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy clash in 2018. His scintillating knock was laced with 13 fours as well as seven maximums and set up an easy win for his team. Meanwhile, Punjab’s Shubman Gill also scored a 55-ball 126 against Karnataka in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy quarter-final encounter in 2022. Gill’s match-winning knock included 11 fours and nine sixes.

Best bowling figures

Assam’s Pritam Das has the best bowling figures at this venue in the T20 format. The right-arm medium-pacer registered sensational figures of 5/9 against Tripura during an Inter State Twenty-20 Tournament game in 2017. Pritam dismissed Udiyan Bose, captain Manisankar Murasingh, Sanjay Majumder, Joydeep Bhattacharjee and Arjun Debnath to bundle out Tripura for 85 in 16.5 overs. Assam later successfully chased down the required target in 12.1 overs as they won the match by seven wickets. Apart from Pritam, Sunil Narine, Mustafizur Rahman and Sarfaraz Ashraf have scalped five wicket-hauls in the T20 format at the Eden Gardens.

Pakistan domestic team Sialkot Stallions holds the record for most consecutive wins in T20 cricket.

Between February 2006 and October 2010, Stallions scripted history as they won every match in the domestic T20 tournaments during the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.

Under captain Imran Nazir (2006-2009) and later under skipper Shoaib Malik, Stallions won five consecutive National T20 Cups and went on a 25-match unbeaten streak during that time period.

However, that historic winning run came to an end in October 2010, when a Shoaib Malik-led Sialkot team suffered a 13-run defeat to Rawalpindi Rams while chasing 198 in a Group B encounter.

Apart from Sialkot Stallions, no other T20 side has ever won more than 15 matches on the trot.

Interestingly, the Indian domestic side Karnataka won 15 consecutive matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy - which is the most by any Indian T20 team and second overall in the history of cricket’s shortest format.

Led by Manish Pandey, an unbeaten Karnataka side lifted the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2018-19 as they went on a 15-match unbeaten streak. Their dream run ended after they lost to Baroda by 14 runs in the 2019-20 edition of the T20 competition.

In the Indian T20 League, the Gautam Gambhir-led Kolkata Team won 14 matches on the trot during May 2014 and October 2014.

After making a horrible start to their Indian T20 League campaign in 2014, Kolkata discovered their mojo in the UAE as they went on a nine-match unbeaten streak and claimed their second title.

Their dominance continued in the Champions League before MS Dhoni’s Chennai ended Kolkata’s 14-match unbeaten run in the Champions League T20 final in Bengaluru.

Six of their 12 wins came at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Dehradun, their adopted home ground in India. Afghanistan also went on an 11-match unbeaten streak in T20Is between March 2016 to March 2017.

The Indian cricket team saw their 12-match unbeaten streak come to an end with a seven-wicket loss to South Africa in June 2022. Team India started their winning run against Afghanistan in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and went on to whitewash New Zealand, West Indies and Sri Lanka in the T20I series at home.

Meanwhile, Pakistan managed to win nine matches in succession between July 2018 to November 2018.

Amongst associate nations, Romania hold the unbeaten record of winning 12 matches in succession. The Romanian cricket team started their winning run against Bulgaria in October 2020 and since then are yet to lose a match.

Former Bangalore captain Virat Kolhi continued his poor run of form in the Indian T20 League 2022 as he was dismissed for a golden duck against Team Lucknow at the DY Patil Stadium on Tuesday.

After Bangalore opener Anuj Rawat returned to the pavilion in the very first over of the match, Kolhli soon followed as he was dismissed on the very first ball that he faced against Lucknow pacer Dushmantha Chameera. The former India captain tried to guide the ball through off-side but ended up giving an easy catch to Deepak Hooda at the backward point on the final ball of the first over.

Interestingly, this was the fourth time Kohli was dismissed for a golden duck in the Indian T20 League. The last time he was out for a golden duck in the Indian T20 League was against former Kolkata fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile in 2017.

What is a golden duck in cricket?

The term ‘duck?in cricket refers to a batter getting dismissed without scoring a single run in their innings. A golden duck, in extension, is when a batter gets dismissed on the first ball of his/her innings without troubling the scorers.

What are the types of ducks in cricket?

There are generally eight different types of ducks in cricket. These are golden duck, silver duck, bronze duck, diamond duck, royal duck, laughing duck, pair and king pair. All types of ducks require the batter to get out without scoring a single run.

Golden Duck: When a batter gets dismissed on the first legal delivery that they face, it is known as a golden duck.

Silver Duck: When a batter gets dismissed on the second delivery of their innings, it is termed a silver duck.

Bronze Duck: When a batter is dismissed on the third delivery of their innings, it is known as a bronze duck.

Diamond Duck: When a batter gets dismissed without facing any legal delivery, it is termed a diamond duck. Diamond Duck is especially applicable in the case of run-outs and time-outs (if an incoming batter is not ready to play within three minutes of the dismissal of the previous batter they are considered dismissed via time-out).

Royal Duck: When an opener gets dismissed on the very first ball of their team’s innings, it is known as a royal duck.

Laughing Duck: When a batter gets out at the end of their team’s innings, it is termed a laughing duck.

Pair: When a batter gets dismissed for zero in both the innings of a Test match or a first-class game, it is referred to as a pair.

King Pair: When a batter gets dismissed on the very first ball that they face in both the innings of a Test without scoring any run, it is called a king pair.

Who has the most golden ducks in cricket?

Former Sri Lanka cricketers Muttiah Muralitharan and Lasith Malinga have the most golden ducks in Test and One-Day Internationals (ODIs) respectively.

While Muralitharan has recorded 14 golden ducks in Test cricket, Malinga accumulated 13 golden ducks in ODIs.

Pakistan batter Umar Akmal has registered the most golden ducks in T20 internationals. Umar Akmal has been dismissed for a golden duck six times in the cricket’s shortest format.

Meanwhile, AB de Villiers, Suresh Raina, Gautam Gambhir and Parthiv Patel have recorded the most golden ducks in the Indian T20 League. All the four batters have been dismissed for a golden duck on four occasions each.

Two new teams were added to the Indian T20 League ahead of its 15th edition with franchises from Lucknow and Gujarat now a part of the biggest T20 league in the world.

The Lucknow franchise was purchased by renowned businessman and sports enthusiast Sanjiv Goenka, whose RPSG Group conglomerate successfully placed a bid of INR 7,090 crore last year to buy the team.

Ahead of the 15th edition of the Indian T20 League, the Lucknow franchise has been shaping up pretty well behind the scenes prior to their bow in the biggest T20 extravaganza across the globe.

With two-time Indian T20 League winning captain Gautam Gambhir as mentor and the legendary Andy Flower as coach, Lucknow put together strong supporting staff that guided them to plenty of smart acquisitions and prudent buys at the two-day mega auction in Bengaluru last month.

Here we have a closer look at what Team Lucknow will offer in their maiden Indian T20 League campaign.

Team Lucknow squad

Ahead of the Indian T20 League 2022 mega auction, the two new teams were presented the opportunity to sign players who could form their core squad. At the player draft, Lucknow roped in KL Rahul (INR 17 crore) as their team captain alongside Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis (INR 9.2 crore) and leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi (INR 4 crore).

In the two-day mega auction held in Bengaluru last month, Lucknow went on to make judicious acquisitions, buying international stars like wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock (INR 6.75 crore), Evin Lewis (INR 2 crore), Jason Holder (INR 8.75 crore) and Sri Lankan pacer Dushmantha Chameera (INR 2 crore). Andrew Tye makes for another great acquisition in the T20 format for the team as the Australian gets ready to replace an injured Mark Wood.

As far as their domestic talents are concerned, Lucknow secured quite a few noteworthy names. Manish Pandey (INR 4.6 crore), all-rounder Krunal Pandya (INR 8.25 crore), Avesh Khan (INR 10 crore) and Deepak Hooda (5.75 crore) will all be donning Lucknow colours in the upcoming campaign.

Team Lucknow squad for Indian T20 League 2022:

KL Rahul (captain), Ravi Bishnoi, Marcus Stoinis, Deepak Hooda, Jason Holder, Manish Pandey, Quinton de Kock (wicket-keeper), Krunal Pandya, Andrew Tye, Avesh Khan, Ankit Singh Rajpoot, Krishnappa Gowtham, Dushmantha Chameera, Shahbaz Nadeem, Manan Vohra, Mohsin Khan, Ayush Badoni, Kyle Mayers, Karan Sharma, Evin Lewis, Mayank Yadav

Team Lucknow strengths and weaknesses

Strengths

One glance at the Lucknow squad highlights their well-rounded and formidable bowling unit, which will be a big threat for opposition batters in the new season. T20 specialist Andrew Tye could be entrusted to make early in-roads into the opposition along with the experienced Jason Holder.

Avesh Khan is another option they can utilise early on even though he will primarily be responsible for keeping things tight at the death alongside Dushmantha Chameera and Tye. Additionally, Lucknow boasts a variety of spin options as well with the likes of Krunal Pandya, Shahbaz Nadeem and Krishnappa Gowtham, all capable of single-handedly turning the tide of a contest on their day.

Weaknesses

Lucknow’s batting looks slightly limited on paper and it will be interesting to see how they perform with the willow should some of their bigger names fail to get going. While KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock make for a formidable opening pair with Manish Pandey at No.3, it will be intriguing to watch what happens if the aforementioned trio finds it difficult to produce their best.

Their dearth of tried and tested batting options isn’t just limited to the top order since a lot will be riding on their power-hitting middle order that features Krunal Pandya, Marcus Stoinis and Deepak Hooda. If their middle-order fails to perform to expectations, a lot of the onus will be on their top order, which isn’t exactly spoilt for choice as far as established international stars go.

Who can be the highest run-scorer for Team Lucknow?

A proven performer on the Indian T20 League stage, expect KL Rahul to lead from the front and finish as his team’s top run-getter in the upcoming campaign. Rahul, who finished as Punjab’s top-scorer (626 runs) last season, has been in fine form for India recently, consistently scoring runs on the international stage across all formats.

He has made 3,273 Indian T20 League runs at a magnificent average of 47.43 with two centuries and 27 fifties. As already mentioned, he enjoyed a fine campaign on a personal front last time around. The season prior in 2020 witnessed Rahul win the Orange Cap for most runs (670) and he was also adjudged the Game Changer of the Season in that edition.

Who can be the highest wicket-taker for Team Lucknow?

Avesh Khan looks primed to finish as his team’s top wicket-taker in Indian T20 League 2022 and he is likely to be Lucknow’s go-to bowler this season. The 25-year-old enjoyed a fine breakthrough campaign last time around, notching 24 wickets in 16 matches at an average of 25.82.

Avesh’s performances last year didn’t go unnoticed with the selectors handing him his T20I debut. He heads into the new Indian T20 League campaign as a capped Indian talent with a couple of international scalps under his belt. With more confidence and experience now than a year back, expect Avesh to go from strength to strength and be Lucknow’s top wicket-taker.

Where will Team Lucknow finish in Indian T20 League 2022?

Starting from scratch as a new franchise in any league isn’t easy and that’s even more so in the ultra-competitive environment that’s synonymous with the Indian T20 League. That said, Lucknow can make the playoffs if all their stars stand up and be counted on most occasions although that’s easier said than done with the players still getting to know one another.

Legendary India cricketer MS Dhoni holds the record for the most matches as captain in T20.

Dhoni has captained in 300 T20 matches during his illustrious career, registering 177 wins, suffering 118 defeats, playing out two ties while three matches ended with no result. He has a healthy win percentage of 59.93.

The Ranchi-born cricketer was appointed the captain to lead the Indian cricket team in the inaugural edition of ICC World T20 held in South Africa in 2007.

Dhoni made his T20 captaincy debut against Scotland in the 2007 ICC World T20 but the match had to be called off due to inclement weather.

Thereon, Dhoni helped the Men in Blue clinch the first-ever ICC World T20 title in South Africa, defeating arch-rivals Pakistan by five runs in a thrilling final.

Dhoni has captained India in 72 matches, securing 41 victories, losing 28 times, playing out one tie while two matches were abandoned. He also holds the joint record for most matches as captain in T20I (72) alongside England’s limited-over captain Eoin Morgan.

Apart from leading the Indian cricket team, Dhoni has captained Team Chennai and the now-defunct Team Pune in the Indian T20 League.

Under his leadership, Chennai have won the Indian T20 League title in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021. Dhoni also led Chennai to the Champions League T20 titles in 2010 and 2014.

Former West Indies cricketer Daren Sammy features second on the list for most matches as captain in T20.

Sammy has captained in 208 matches in the T20 format, registering 104 wins and succumbing to 97 defeats. He recorded a win percentage of 51.72.

Sammy led West Indies to the ICC World T20 title in 2012 and 2016. He is the only captain to have won the World T20 title twice.

Apart from the West Indies cricket team, Sammy has led Team Hyderabad in the Indian Super League, Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League, Rajshahi Kings in the Bangladesh Premier League, St Lucia, St Lucia Stars and St Lucia Zouks in the Caribbean Premier League.

India’s Virat Kohli is third on the list for most matches as captain in T20s. Kohli has led in 190 T20 matches with a win percentage of 52.44.

Between 2017 and 2021, Kohli also captained India in 50 matches in T20I, securing 30 victories with a win percentage of 64.58.

India cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma complete the top five list for most matches as captain in T20.

While Gambhir has skippered 170 matches in T20 cricket, Sharma has led in 162 matches in the shortest format.

Under Gambhir’s captaincy, Kolkata won the Indian T20 League title twice in 2012 and 2014 while Rohit has led Mumbai to five Indian T20 League titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. The Nagpur-born cricketer has also captained India in 28 matches, securing 24 wins with an impressive win percentage of 85.71.
