The Indian T20 League 2021 has entered its business end with the possibility of a new league champion looming.

Who will be the tournament winner?

“My head is saying Delhi but my heart is saying Bangalore,�?Brett Lee said. “I think Delhi with their bowling attack will probably win because of their fearsome aggression with the new ball, but there is something about Bangalore that this year they made into the playoffs.

“Virat Kohli and ABD (AB de Villiers) haven't produced the runs they wanted to but if these guys explode, look out! I think Bangalore could win this,�?Binga added.

Rishabh Pant’s Delhi have reached the playoffs stage of Indian T20 League 2021 for the second consecutive season, and the last year’s finalists will take confidence from their brilliant run in the UAE leg of the tournament. Having won 10 of their 14 matches this season with a net run rate of 0.481, Binga believes Delhi will eventually be the winner despite his heart waging for Bangalore to end their title drought.

Delhi will knock out Chennai

“I'm going to go with Team Blue (Delhi); they will knock Chennai out,�?Lee said. “They (Delhi) beat them (Chennai) in the first game anyway so it’s Delhi who will hit the maximum sixes. I think Avesh Khan will be the top bowler. He will be the go-to bowler to take maximum wickets,�?the former Australian speedster added.

Avesh Khan has led the Delhi bowling in Indian T20 League 2021, grabbing 22 wickets at an economy of 7.18. The 24-year-old bagged two wickets in their reverse fixture earlier in this campaign and the 2003 World Cup winner has backed him as the go-to bowler in this tie.

Furthermore, Brett Lee believes Delhi’s momentum gives them the edge to hit maximum sixes in the contest.

Maxwell, Morgan to register maximum scores

“Maxwell will score a fifty,�?Brett Lee said with confidence. “He is in red hot form because he is playing for the team in red,�?Binga joked before going on to praise his compatriot and England’s Eoin Morgan. “Captain Morgan (Eoin Morgan) will be the top run-scorer in my opinion. Good guys who stepped up to the plate when needed,�?he said.

While many doubted Glenn Maxwell’s big-money move might not click, the ‘Big Show�?has proven his doubters wrong by smashing 498 runs at a strike rate of 147.33. With six fifty-plus scores in the 2021 edition alone, SportsAdda brand ambassador Lee is confident that Maxwell will notch another fifty against Kolkata.

SportsAdda brand ambassador Brett Lee is highly hopeful of Team Chennai’s biggest positive this season in the form of opening batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad in episode 4 of SportsAdda presents T20 Crazy, powered by Sportsbet.io.

In a candid chat with Manish Batavia, the former Australian fast bowler spoke highly of the Chennai young gun and how his game has lifted his side’s performance this year.

“He's definitely been one of my favourite players in the Indian T20 League 2021. He's got a wonderful understanding of the match, he knows when to change gears. He is one player who can definitely go through the gears. He knows how to start off slowly in the first and second gears and take his time but when he wants to go to the fourth and fifth gears, he can up the ante,�?Lee stated.

The 2003 World Cup winner also stressed on the importance of such players from a futuristic point of view. 

“Players like that will go on to score big hundreds, players like that can go on to represent India for a long period of time. He has been outstanding for CSK,�?Lee added.

Russell, DK to step up for Kolkata   

The SportsAdda ambassador was not much bothered about the form of Kolkata skipper Eoin Morgan in the ongoing edition of the Indian T20 League.

“I am not worried because his experience definitely counts. They rely on a team, they are winning games without their big players. Andre Russell is not firing the way he would have liked to. Dinesh Karthik is a quality player, he is a great finisher,�?the 44-year-old said.

However, the former Aussie great focussed on the need of senior players stepping up to an occasion like the playoffs.

“This is the time when the most experienced campaigners have to step up. You have got to play that complete game of cricket. It's one side there's fearless cricket but on the other side because that's what sports is all about.

“You want to enjoy your moment, enjoy your teammates. And you enjoy it a lot more when you are winning.�?/span>

SportsAdda ambassador Brett Lee has expressed his discontent with the way David Warner has been treated by Team Hyderabad after a poor run of form in the 2021 Indian T20 League. 

Warner hasn’t played for Hyderabad in the last two matches and has been replaced by Jason Roy in the starting XI, leading to the suggestion that it might be the end of his Hyderabad career. 

“Well, potentially [he can leave Hyderabad],�?Brett Lee told SportsAdda in a chat with Manish Batavia on T20 Crazy, powered by sportsbet.io. 

“But the thing with David Warner which I’m baffled about is that he is a quality player. He has always been among runs and would be in my team every single time. Now, Kane Williamson can potentially offer more in terms of captaincy, fair enough. But Warner should never be dropped. He should be playing every single game. 

“He is a very confident person, a very confident player, but dropping him after one or two poor results is not the way to treat a world-class batsman.�?/span>

Ravindra Jadeja a godsend

Chennai’s Ravindra Jadeja recently played a match-winning knock against Team Kolkata and Lee was left impressed with his performance. 

Jadeja rescued victory from the jaws against Kolkata after coming into bat with his team reeling at 6/146 in 18 overs. He unleashed a much-needed onslaught as Chennai needed 26 runs in the final couple of overs, hitting Prasidh Krishna for 20 runs in four deliveries during the penultimate over. Jadeja was eventually dismissed but his job was done.

“He is a tremendous player, isn’t he?�?said Lee.

“He is a wonderful bowler but even a greater finisher when it comes to batting. He has been a huge find for India and anytime he gets the chance to put the pads on either for Chennai or for India, he’d be a godsend.�?/span>

Harshal Patel a good find for India

Bangalore pacer Harshal Patel has been phenomenal this season. The leading wicket-taker of the ongoing edition, he was once again the key in his side’s 54-run over Mumbai. As for Lee, he thinks that Patel’s form bodes well not only for Bangalore but also for Team India.

“He’s great, but what I love the most is the excitement on his face. He has obviously had great matches, but it’s the smile on his captain’s face that has made the difference. He is in a good space, his captain is proud of the way he is playing and it’s all happening for him.

Have we seen the last of Gayle in Indian T20 League?

Punjab batsman Chris Gayle recently decided to pull out of the Indian T20 League, citing bubble fatigue. It’s a big loss for his franchise and it remains to be seen if Gayle returns for another season.

While it’s entirely up to him to decide whether he will play the next edition of the Indian T20 League or not, there are also questions surrounding how many suitors he can entice at the age of 42.

“Look, it’s a tough question because when you think about Gayle, you’d pick him on your side just because of his character,�?said Brett Lee. 

“He is still a good batsman, but is he going to be as good as he used to be? Maybe not. Maybe we have seen the last of Chris Gayle in the Indian T20 League.

“But in the end, it’s his choice. This guy has been world-class, one of the best T20 players the world has ever seen so he can definitely know when to put a stop,�?Lee added.

During his candid conversation with Manish Batavia, the former Australian spearhead discussed his spell-bound reaction to young Rajasthan pacer Kartik Tyagi, who he said resembles his own run-up from the yesteryears. 

“The guy's quite whippy. He's not a muscular and strong guy, but you don't need to have big muscles to bowl quick. He's got a beautiful run-up; that’s one thing I always tried to do. He's definitely got that with that front arm which he pulls really hard and gets that trajectory off the wicket.�?/span>

Lee also admired the way the UP-born pacer celebrated. 

“I like his celebrations. I like the way he gets into the game, but what a quality last over to just contain them and defend that small amount in the last over.”�?/span>

Tyagi defended four off the final over against Punjab by conceding just a run and taking two key wickets to send the cricketing fraternity into a frenzy by showing nerves of steel. 

“All it takes is a boundary, and it's game over. But he defended it, got a few key wickets and congratulations to him!�?/span>

 

Kohli crumbling under pressure, maybe

The SportsAdda ambassador believes that Virat Kohli could have delayed his call on stepping down as Bangalore captain. 

“I thought he could have waited until the end of the T20 League because what happens if they go out there and win. If they win, they would want him to be the captain again next year, but he has come out and said that he won't be captaining in international cricket, or he won't be captaining Bangalore either.�?/span>

The former Australian great also discussed Kohli becoming his old self again after letting go of captaincy pressure.

“It's probably the right call. He wants to focus purely on his batting, give someone else the reins and just go back to one of the most brilliant fieldsmen, and pressure is off him from a captaincy point of view.”�?/span>

Binga certainly believes that the call taken is in the larger interest of the franchise and the country. 

“He can now focus on his batting which is the best thing for his team and the best position for India too.�?/span>

The second phase of the Indian T20 League is all set to commence from Sunday. Defending champions Mumbai take on Chennai at the Dubai International Stadium.

Mumbai to hit maximum sixes against Chennai

“I think I am bleeding blue. I just think with those big hitters, those powerful players, I have got to go with Mumbai. Mumbai will get the most sixes,�?/span> Lee said

Both Mumbai and Chennai house some clean strikers who can hit sixes at will. However, Binga feels Mumbai will end up hitting most sixes out of the two sides, considering the T20 stalwarts in their team. For the record, Rohit Sharma (224 sixes) and Kieron Pollard (211 sixes) are in the top 10 list for most sixes hit in the tournament. 

Shivam Mavi, the best bowler in Kolkata vs Bengaluru clash

“I think Shivam Mavi will get the extra bit of pace playing at Abu Dhabi. He can get a bit of shape and bounce early on. I know it is a flattish wicket but this tournament, second half, he might get some carry first up,�?Lee said of the promising young Kolkata fast bowler.

Shivam Mavi did not enjoy a great first half of the Indian T20 League and was pounded for 24 runs in an over by Prithvi Shaw, before the tournament ended abruptly. However, Brett Lee feels the youngster will play a role, especially in Abu Dhabi, where Kolkata are set to play their first match of the rescheduled season. 

KL Rahul to score a fifty against Rajasthan

“Yes...The reason why he will score a fifty is I don’t care what format he is playing, whether it is Test, 50-over match or T20, the game of cricket is very similar in all three formats, but he is in very good form, and form can translate and go across in different formats. So I believe he will get a fifty if not a big one,�?Brett Lee added. 

KL Rahul put on an impressive show in the recent Test series in England. The Punjab captain scored 315 runs in four matches, including a brilliant hundred at Lord’s, to orchestrate a win for India. According to the Australian speedster, KL Rahul will carry his sensational form to the game’s shortest format from the Test series. 

Hyderabad to win against Delhi

“I will go with Hyderabad. I think we the hunger and the injection of David Warner back in the team, with a new-look side they have got a chance to reflect over the past few months.�?/span>

“Delhi, of course, are in good form, but I will go with Orange, the Hyderabad side,�?Lee opined. 

Hyderabad are currently rock-bottom in the team standings, with a solitary win from seven games. They had a dismal run in the first phase of the Indian T20 League and will be eager to start afresh in UAE.

Rohit to be the top scorer for Mumbai against Kolkata 

“I will go with Rohit Sharma.�?/span>

“Rohit Sharma at the top of the innings gets to face the new ball against a bit of extra pace from Kolkata. I am going to go with Mumbai and Rohit Sharma. I think he is due for a big score first up.�?said a confident Brett Lee.  

Rohit Sharma has a fantastic record against Kolkata, aggregating 982 runs across 27 matches, including six fifties and a hundred. According to Brett Lee, the Mumbai captain is well-placed to extend his stellar run against the two-time champions.

Sitting down with Manish Batavia for a free-wheeling chat, the former Australian speedster reflected upon the challenges Rajasthan will have to tackle in the absence of their frontline wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler.

“He's a massive loss. You know when you lose a player of that ability and calibre that you need some other player to step up. He's almost a two-man player.�?/span>

The former Aussie spearhead opined that it is tough to fill in the English wicket-keeper’s boots.

“He will go out there and dominate, will take on the bowlers, he hits inside out, he hits with the ball coming into the legs as well. He's definitely a quality player. So they have to make sure to find someone who can step up."

Russell to revive Kolkata’s campaign   

The SportsAdda ambassador believes Andre Russell can have a significant impact on the Kolkata setup. After a relatively quiet Caribbean Premier League campaign, the T20 bigwig and marauder has to lead a Kolkata unit that failed to click in the first half of the Indian T20 league.

When asked about the possible bowling option from the Bangalore unit that is likely to trouble the big man, Lee had his thoughts ready.

“Someone like Mohammed Siraj with a bit of extra whip with his action when he gets that extra bounce. The thing with Russell is that when he first comes in, he doesn’t like the ball short, he doesn’t like that big quick yorker as most batsmen don’t like. However, once he’s in, he can play.�?/span>

Lee had some words of wisdom for the Kolkata team about supporting Russell to the tee.

“When he’s not scoring runs or taking wickets, Kolkata struggle. They need someone like Russell to play with freedom, and I hope that they go and tell him to play the stellar cricket that he knows and what we all love to watch.�?/span>

Binga wished that he (Andre Russell) got the necessary backing within the team to lift Kolkata from the bottom half of the points table.

“If you go out there and get out first ball, so be it, but if you play with that confidence and freedom, you will have a much better half of the tournament.”�?/span>

“I’m going to go with Bangalore. I think that Punjab are still a little bit behind the eight ball, they still haven’t found their best combination yet. I do believe that they have to inject back in those Australian fast bowlers at some stage.They have picked their team around the fast bowlers and they did give them a couple of games. They are quality bowlers, I think get them back in the team,�?Lee said.

Bangalore have won 14 of the 26 matches played against Punjab, and Binga predicts Virat Kohli’s side will add two more points to their tally on Friday.

Quinton de Kock to be top scorer for Mumbai

“I think it will be Quinton de Kock. He’s been in good form this week already. He was wanting some runs, he was trying to spend some time at the crease. He got both this week,�?Lee predicted.

After struggling for runs in the first five matches, Quinton de Kock played a match-winning knock of unbeaten 70 runs to guide his side to victory against Rajasthan.

Hyderabad will be the better bowling team against Rajasthan

“Well, they both have got a strong bowling attack. Hyderabad have a very good bowling attack. So, I’m gonna go with the Orange Army. Hopefully, they can step up this week,�?Lee said.

Interestingly, both Rajasthan and Hyderabad are languishing at the bottom of the Indian T20 League points table in the seventh and eighth spot, respectively.

Punjab to hit most sixes against Delhi

“Well, the easy option is to go with Delhi, however, I’m gonna go Punjab. With few more matches underneath their belt, with some more experience, maybe, a rejig with the team, I’m gonna go with Punjab,�?Lee predicted.

Both Punjab and Delhi possess some big-hitters on their respective team sheets. However, considering the impact of Chris Gayle and KL Rahul for Punjab, Binga’s prediction seems justified. 

Glenn Maxwell to score 50 against Kolkata

“Well, the Indian T20 League is the Big Show, and the ‘Big Show�?is playing in the Indian T20 League, so yes,�?Lee said on being asked if Maxwell will score a fifty against Kolkata.

Glenn Maxwell has scored 223 runs in five innings in the ongoing edition of the T20 League. He has already hit two fifties in the competition.

From Deepak Chahar’s match-winning spell against Kolkata to Glenn Maxwell finding his form, SportsAdda’s brand ambassador Brett Lee addressed several talking points that surfaced during the second week of the 2021 Indian T20 League.

In a candid chat with Manish Batavia, the former Australian pacer first explained what makes Deepak Chahar a quality bowler in the Indian T20 League. Chahar was Chennai’s best bowler during their 18-run win over Kolkata, picking four wickets while conceding just 29 runs.

“It was an absolutely brilliant piece of fast bowling,�?said Lee. 

“When we talk about Deepak Chahar it is not the express pace over that 145 kmph bracket, but it doesn’t have to be because he has got that shape, he has got that swing, he has got that length and he had the ball on a string. It came off the hand beautifully and his seam position was impeccable.  He got the ball nibble a little bit. So when the ball nibbles of the seam, you are destined to take wickets.�?/span>

The curious case of Glenn Maxwell

For someone who failed to hit a six during the entirety of the Indian T20 League last year, the rejuvenation in Glenn Maxwell’s form has been a sheer treat, to say the least. The Australian all-rounder has already bettered his last year’s tally in just three innings and judging by the form he is in, it is safe to say that there’s more to come.

“I’ll try to work out why Maxwell has been so successful with this franchise. Nothing changed with his technique. He might be a little bit more closed off than he was last year in terms of front foot. His hips position now is in alignment in terms of facing towards the umpire,�?explains Brett Lee. 

“Apart from that, I think Maxwell is thriving in an environment where he is not the ‘big show�? He is still an important player but now he is playing in a squad that has got Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. So I think all the pressure is off Maxwell now. 

“Normally in the other teams, he has been the main man, he has to score runs, he has got to step up. But when you throw Kohli and de Villiers, they are the guys with all the spotlight. So Maxwell can come under the radar and play his natural game. He is relishing the fact that he is in an environment that allows him to express himself.�?/span>

Age-defying Devdutt Padikkal

Bangalore opener Devdutt Padikkal scored his maiden Indian T20 League century on Thursday, April 22 against Rajasthan. The funny thing that is floating around the internet is the fact that on the same date exactly 10 years back, Chris Gayle scored his maiden Indian T20 League century, with the West Indian remaining not out along with Virat Kohli.

Lee, for one, is impressed by the 20-year-old’s style and has said that he hasn’t seen a guy that well at the age of 20.

“You see he is a different player from Gayle. Yes, they are both left-handers, but play a different style. Gayle is more aggressive, hits sixes while Padikkal has got beautiful timing. 

“Up until his century, he had 36 runs in two innings, but that was a good 36. He looked like he was in good form. You go back to last season where he scored 400-plus runs so you know his track record is good. I haven’t seen a guy that well at the age of 20 ever.�?/span>

KL Rahul’s class is permanent

KL Rahul has been amongst runs in the Indian T20 League but has been criticised for playing at a rather substandard strike rate. In his four innings so far this season, only once has he managed to strike at a rate of over 180, but Lee says Rahul is a much better player than what the stats show.

“We all know KL Rahul can score runs quickly. I think back maybe three or four years ago he got a fifty in 14 balls so there is no reason why he can’t score runs quickly. He has got the technique to do it, he has got the mindset, but I think this slower strike rate is because he is trying to bat through the entire innings. He is probably thinking I need to bat deep, I need to go through the 14-15 overs to set the platform for the team. 

“But you know you can’t soak up too many balls. He is a much better player than what the stats show so I’m not concerned about KL Rahul because his class is permanent.�?/span>

“They (Punjab) have struggled recently with back-to-back losses and two of their Australian bowlers (Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith) were left out of the team as they tried some new combinations. Mumbai looks set so for me it’s Mumbai,�?Lee said.

Punjab’s decision to drop their big-money signings Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith for the game against Hyderabad backfired heavily as they lost the tie by nine wickets - their third loss on the trot.

Mumbai, meanwhile, have two wins and two defeats but their bowling unit has been more effective than KL Rahul and Co. Rahul Chahar (eight wickets) and Trent Boult (six wickets) feature in the top 10 list currently and will be eager to exploit the inconsistencies in Punjab’s batting order.

Hands down! Kolkata to hit most sixes against Rajasthan

“Kolkata hands down! I mean the way they (Andre Russell and Pat Cummins) batted the other evening (against Chennai) when they were 31/5 as they chased 221. Great performance from the second half of the team as no one gave them the chance so Kolkata, of course, will hit more sixes than Rajasthan,�?Lee said emphatically about one of his former teams.

Despite recent results not going their way, Kolkata will start as favourites against Rajasthan on the virtue of the record of their recent meetings (four wins, one loss). Pat Cummins, who created an unwanted T20 record, made up for his mistake with the ball by smashing an unbeaten 66 off 34 balls which was laced with six maximums.

Bangalore to win against Chennai

“It’s going to be a tough game, but I’m going to go with Bangalore because they have won four games on the trot. They have the momentum and they are going to be too strong for Chennai, in my opinion,�?Lee says.

Virat Kohli’s Bangalore has been on a juggernaut run, and their recent one-sided victory over Rajasthan consolidated their status as favourites to win Indian T20 League 2021. Skipper Kohli became the first player to reach 6000 runs in the tournament while his opening partner Devdutt Padikkal registered his maiden century in the competition. Expect both to give a hard time to the likes of Sam Curran and Deepak Chahar.

Warner is due and hungry for runs, to score 50-plus

“I think David Warner is due. He’s found a little bit of form and he appears very fit. He looks hungry and when Warner is hungry for runs, that’s when I lock him in. Hence I’m locking David Warner for a big 50-plus,�?Lee said of his compatriot

Hyderabad captain David Warner has registered scores of 54, 36 and 37 in his last three games as he continues to rediscover his free-scoring roots in the Indian T20 League. Binga predicts that the 34-year-old left-handed batsman will own the night on Sunday when Hyderabad take on Delhi with a 50-plus score.

Gayle to score 50 in Motera

"Like David Warner, you can’t keep champions down for too long and Chris Gayle is definitely a champion, the Universe Boss. Yes, he’ll score a fifty. It will be exciting,�?Lee said about his one-time nemesis on the field.

With scores of 40, 10, 11 and 15, Chris Gayle is a shadow of his usual run-machine character in the Indian T20 League and SportsAdda ambassador Brett Lee is convinced that the 'Universe Boss' will strike back in fashion. The Jamaican has scored 700 runs against Kolkata and will be eager to record the 32nd 50-plus score of his Indian T20 League career on Monday.
