In a podcast, English cricketers Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali discussed the idea of playing for Pakistan. The host hinted at his preferred team, but the two players offered interesting takes.

Adil expressed a strong wish to succeed in the sport in his home country rather than switch allegiance. Moeen, on the other hand, emphasised that the chance to play at the international level was his main focus, regardless of the nation he represented.

‘If I was born here I'd look to play if I was born in Pakistan if I was born in India wherever I was born yeah surely that's the country that I will try and play for? Adil said when asked the question during Beard Before Wicket podcast.

The show host shared that he sees himself as 'British-Asian' and would pick Pakistan over England if given the choice. Moeen found this idea 'crazy' and added that he never thought about it at all.

Adil Rashid added that he never thought about playing for Pakistan instead of England. When the host suggested it might be a rule stopping Rashid from playing for Pakistan, both stars clarified, saying ‘We don't qualify to play for Pakistan?

Old Trafford is one of the oldest cricket grounds located in Greater Manchester, England.

Established in 1857, the Old Trafford opened as the home of Manchester Cricket Club and has been the home of Lancashire County Cricket Club since 1864.

Old Trafford hosted its first international cricket match, an Ashes Test played between arch-rivals England and Australia in July 1884 and became England’s second oldest Test venue. The match ended in a draw.

Almost a century later in 1972, it staged its first One-Day International (ODI) that featured England and Australia. Under the leadership of Brian Close, England won the first-ever ODI at the venue by six wickets.

Old Trafford hosted its first T20 international played between hosts England and New Zealand in Manchester in June 2008. Since then, it has staged more than 10 T20 internationals so far.

With a seating capacity of around 19,000, the stadium is currently known as Emirates Old Trafford due to a sponsorship deal with the Emirates airline.

England played like World Champions as they chased down the highest-ever total against India in ODIs to register a six-wicket win in Pune to level the three-match series 1-1.

The visitors rode on commanding performances from Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes to chase a mammoth 337-run target set by India, with 6.3 overs to spare.

This England win sets up a mouth-watering series decider to be played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) stadium on Sunday.

Meanwhile, India will look up to their opening batting partnership of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma for a better start in the final ODI after they were dismissed in the Powerplay overs in the last encounter. While KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant rescued the hosts to set-up a huge total, lack of bite in the bowling while defending their total is what cost them a series-clinching win.

For Jonny Bairstow, it was complete redemption as his 100-plus stand with Jason Roy in the second ODI put behind the disappointment of their partnership in the series opener. His century stands with Roy and Stokes got the Three Lions to 287 in 37 overs until his dismissal on 124.

I anticipate that the series decider on Sunday will have plenty of fireworks and some career-defining moments, and here are my four names who could script a Man of the Match performance in the third and final ODI.

Rohit Sharma

India limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma is undoubtedly one of the finest hitters of the cricket ball and he is due for a big score in the ongoing ODI series. The Indian cricket team opener might be struggling for runs in this ODI series, but he is someone who performs well under pressure. I’m expecting Rohit to bounce back in style in the final encounter on Sunday and add to his tally of 9168 runs in the 50-overs format.

Rishabh Pant

Team India’s swashbuckling wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant once again showed why he is an asset to any side in the second ODI on Friday. The left-hander smashed seven sixes and three fours in his 77-run knock off just 40 balls. Such has been the great depth of talent in Indian cricket, the 23-year-old Pant was playing his first ODI since January 2020. With the kind of form that Rishabh has displayed in the ongoing series against England, I believe Pant will play an important role in the series decider on Sunday.

Jos Buttler

Stand-in captain Jos Buttler has been a vital cog in England’s One-Day plans, but his recent scores of 1, 3, 8, 2, 0 are indeed alarming to a player of his calibre. The 30-year-old has piled up 316 runs in 18 meetings against India, and his decision to field first earned him a series-levelling victory in the second ODI. My gut feeling is that Buttler will strike back with a top-notch performance in the series decider in Pune.

Adil Rashid

Adil Rashid got the better of Virat Kohli once again in ODI cricket, as he dismissed the Indian cricket team captain for the fourth time in seven matches. Rashid has been a wicket-taker for England in the middle-overs despite being a little bit expensive in the ongoing ODI series. The pitch for the second ODI didn’t offer solace to spinners but he managed to grab the important wicket of the India talisman and I reckon he might have a plan to scalp more victims in the final ODI on Sunday.

The Indian cricket team’s emphatic eight-run victory over England in the fourth T20I on Thursday saw the hosts set up a mouth-watering finale for the five-match series at the Motera Stadium on Saturday.

After a 2-1 win over Australia in the T20I series, which maintained their unbeaten series run since cricket’s resumption following the global virus enforced worldwide lockdown, England will now look to get the better of the Aussies in the ODIs. Australia, though, will be looking to make amends in the three-match ODI series that’s slated to begin from Friday in Manchester having fallen short in the T20Is. With both teams boasting plenty of talented game-changers, we have a look at a few potential difference-makers in the first ODI.

Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler has been in tremendous form across formats over the English summer. He’s been amongst the runs against West Indies, Pakistan and most recently Australia in the T20I series. Buttler made 44 and an unbeaten 77 in the two T20I matches against Australia that he was involved in. The English wicket-keeper has scored two hundreds and made 926 runs at an average of 46.30 and a strike rate of 107.93 in 27 ODI innings against the Aussies. He will once again pose a huge threat to the opposition bowlers, making it imperative for the men from down under to dismiss him early.

Adil Rashid

Like Buttler, Adil Rashid has enjoyed a fruitful summer, albeit with the ball instead of the bat. He’s consistently picked up wickets against Ireland, Pakistan and in the T20I series against Australia. Not only has he picked up wickets and broken dangerous partnerships for England at regular intervals, but Rashid has also managed to keep things tight and remain economical at the same time. How the Aussies fare against him could go a long way into dictating the eventual outcome of the series, making him a key player to keep an eye on.

Aaron Finch

It’s no secret that Aaron Finch loves competing against England in the limited-over formats and going by his form in the recent T20Is against them, expect the Australian skipper to fire on all cylinders in the ODIs. Finch made 46, 40 and 39 against England in the three T20Is but failed to convert his starts into a match-winning innings. However, his current form and history against England in ODIs doesn’t make for kind reading if you are an English supporter. Seven of Finch’s 16 ODI centuries have come against England and his average of 50.12 against them is better than his career average of 41.02, which is why dismissing him quickly is so important for the hosts.

Ashton Agar

The slow left-arm orthodox spinner from Melbourne, Victoria managed to make inroads into the English batting line-up in all three T20I matches and he will be hoping to do more of the same in the ODIs. Ashton Agar outperformed Australia’s more established spinner Adam Zampa in the T20I series and will most likely be the Aussies?go-to spin option, at least in the first ODI. He took five wickets against the hosts in the T20Is and will be hoping to make a more telling impact against them in the ODIs. No muck with the bat either, Agar can also contribute for the team from a batting perspective.

Babar Azam's reign atop the ICC rankings for T20I batsmen is over as England's Dawid Malan, coming off a 129-run haul in the three-match T20I series against Australia, took over the No. 1 spot.

Malan was one of the star performers of the recently-concluded series, setting the standards in the very first match itself, where he nabbed the Player of the Match award with a 43-ball 66 and assured England of a two-run victory as the men from Down Under faltered toward the end of their innings.

Malan's T20I record features some flattering numbers, with 682 runs bagged from 16 matches, with an average of 48.71 and strike rate of 146.66, along with a century and seven 50s.

Among England batsmen, Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler also managed to move up the rankings. Bairstow climbed three positions to slot in at No. 19 while Buttler, who scored 121 runs in the two matches that he participated - an effort that earned him the Player of the Series award - leapt up 12 rungs to No. 28.

Among England's bowlers, Adil Rashid, who bagged six scalps in the series, moved up two spots to slot in at No. 7.

There was less shuffling of the order amid Australia's players, however, with only pacer Kane Richardson, who nabbed three wickets in the series, cracking the top 10 for the first time in his career.

A Jos Buttler masterclass with the bat drove England to victory in the second T20I by seven wickets and the hosts will now look to complete a 3-0 drubbing of rivals Australia in the final T20I of the series on Tuesday, September 8.

With Buttler ruled out and both teams likely to make some changes to their side, we take a look at two players from each team that can make a difference in the final T20I of the series.

Dawid Malan

The 33-year-old batsman continued his stellar form in T20Is for England, playing a measured innings of 42 off 32 balls and guiding the hosts to an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series against Australia. Since the return of cricket, Malan has scored 192 in five T20Is at a healthy average of 38.4. Malan has been the perfect replacement for Joe Root in the line-up and will be hoping to finish the series on a high note in the third T20I.

Marcus Stoinis

All-rounder Marcus Stoinis battled valiantly in the first T20I amidst a collapse from Australia while chasing 162 and he came just a hit shy of guiding them to victory but failed to do so. Stoinis finished with 23 runs off 18 balls as England emerged victorious by a narrow margin of just two runs. In the second match, Stoinis walked in to bat at the end of the fifth over with his side in trouble at 30-3 and conjured a gritty knock, scoring 35 off 26 balls, helping his side put up a respectable total of 157 on the scoreboard.

Stoinis has been the best batsman in the struggling Australian middle order and the team will be hoping that he can carry his form in the third T20I and help the visitors avoid a whitewash.

Adil Rashid

Spinner Adil Rashid has been the pick of the bowlers for England since the resumption of white-ball cricket in August.

Bar his one poor outing against Pakistan in the third T20I of their three-match series where he finished with figures of 0-40 in three overs, Rashid has been terrific with the ball and has picked at least a wicket in the remaining three matches.

In those matches, Rashid has picked up five wickets at a tremendous economy rate of 7.16. In the second T20I against Australia, the 32-year-old gave away just 25 runs in his quota of four overs while picking up the prized wicket of Marcus Stoinis.

Ashton Agar

While Rashid has been England’s talisman with the ball, Ashton Agar has been that for the Aussies.

The 26-year-old has picked four wickets in the first two matches in this series at a tremendous economy rate of 7.37. Agar can contribute with the bat as well, like he showed in the second T20I, scoring 23 off 20.

Australia have had a miserable time so far in England but Agar is definitely enjoying a good run of form.

England are on a high in T20Is although they could only draw the recent T20 series against Pakistan that ended on Tuesday. They had earlier won the series against South Africa 2-1 in 2020 in the Rainbow Nation. And now with Australia set to tour them for a three-match series that begins on September 4, we take a look at some of the players' milestones to keep an eye on.

Mitchell Starc's impact for Australia

Mitchell Starc is on 43 T20I wickets and is set to become the first Australian bowler to get to 50 T20I wickets in the country's history. He, however, isn't on the top of the list, with Shane Watson leading the charts currently with 48 wickets in the shortest format of the game. Starc has an average of 18.65 in T20Is and a strike rate of 16.1 in the format. What possibly stands out for him is his economy rate of 6.91, which is rare for a fast bowler in this format.

The dangerous Aaron Finch

Australia's skipper Aaron Finch is a prolific T20 player and has forged some extraordinary partnerships with David Warner in the past. Finch holds the record for the highest individual score in T20Is and is now on 1989 runs, 11 runs away from becoming the second Australian batsman after David Warner to 2000 T20I runs.

Finch is the highest run-scorer in T20Is for Australia against England with 425 runs at an average of 70.83 with a hundred and three fifties. His second score of 150 or more in T20Is - a blistering 156 also came against England in Southampton in 2013.

Adil Rashid set for 50 wickets

Adil Rashid is among the most wicket-taking leg-spinners in limited-overs cricket in recent years. While the focus has been on England's pacers, Rashid has racked up wickets in plenty and is on 43 T20I wickets. He needs seven wickets to reach 50 T20I wickets, a landmark that only three other England bowlers and one other England spinner has achieved. Rashid will be the fourth England bowler after Stuart Broad, Chris Jordan and Graeme Swann to the feat.

Glenn Maxwell's T20I centuries

Glenn Maxwell makes a return to the Australian ODI team but in T20Is, the all-rounder is a mainstay and an impact player. Maxwell has fit in well in the middle-order as well as at the top of the batting line-up, and has three T20I centuries for Australia. He needs one more hundred in the format to go level with Rohit Sharma for most T20I hundreds. Colin Munro from Australia also has three T20I centuries. Maxwell's centuries in T20Is came against Sri Lanka (145* off 65 balls in 2016), England (103* off 58 balls in 2018) and India (113* off 55 balls in 2019).

Eoin Morgan's ridiculous numbers

Eoin Morgan has racked up some extraordinary numbers in international cricket in recent times. According to a recent interview, Morgan himself clarified that he never remembers hitting the ball as well as he is doing now. This is backed up by the stats too.

Until 2019, Morgan had 1734 runs in 75 T20I innings at an average of 28.42 and a strike rate of 131.36, hardly mind-blowing by any stretch of one's imagination. Morgan also notched up nine fifties in this period, roughly one every eighth innings on an average.

Since 2019, the numbers have skyrocketed. Morgan has 494 runs at an average of 44.9 and a strike rate of 174.55 with five half-centuries in 15 innings, one every third innings on an average. Morgan will be the first England batsman to 500 runs in T20Is since 2019 when he gets there.
